Why magician David Blaine decided to show up for the Pluto mission..

David Blaine: He’s the guy who survived being electrocuted for 72 hours, frozen for 63 hours and submerged in water for 17 minutes. So what makes him a good fit for an appearance at the New Horizons Pluto flyby mission?

Well, who cares? He did it anyway, taking the stage in his signature all-black outfit in the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab Tuesday night — just hours before NASA got confirmation that the spacecraft survived its encounter with the Pluto system earlier in the morning.

The NASA scientists and space enthusiasts gathered let out oohs and aahs as he sent invisible playing cards beneath the wristwatch of an unsuspecting volunteer. His big act of the night was having a woman pick out a puzzle piece at random that fit perfectly into an image of space — right where Pluto is supposed to be.  Read more…

Magicians still casting spells across Canada and the world..

Magicians still casting spells across Canada and the world..

By Allan Maki for the Globe and Mail..

As curio shops go, Brent Smith’s Vanishing Rabbit is all things magical. Attached to the ceiling is a series of old billboards advertising the greats through the ages – Houdini, Sorcar, Mandrake and a young Doug Henning as Chou Chou (pronounced Shoe Shoe), the clown who actually sold shoes for a living.

Inside Mr. Smith’s store, a creepy-looking Charlie McCarthy puppet sits above display cases filled with easy-to-perform tricks and novelties, including the ever-popular Fart Extinguisher.

“It’s a big hit with the kids,” Mr. Smith says as he emerges from behind a counter holding a deck of Svengali playing cards. “I sell a lot of cards, too. Magic is really hot right now.”

Magic isn’t just hot: It is a bubbling cauldron of showy illusionists, polished prestidigitators and expert sleight-of-hand artists. Turn on the TV and out pop the master tricksters – Dynamo, known as Magician Impossible; David Blaine, street magician/endurance artist; and Criss Angel Mindfreak, who can lop off the arm of a willing volunteer using hypnosis and a power saw. Viewer discretion is advised.

Meet the smoldering magician casting a spell on celebs..

Meet the smoldering magician casting a spell on celebs..

On a balmy spring Saturday night, pretty young things pour into theNoMad Hotel. There’s an Adrien Brody sighting in the lobby, but the scantily clad girls in bandage dresses and sky-high Louboutins aren’t here to meet movie stars.

They’re here for a magic show.

Or, more specifically, to lock eyes with Dan White, the smoldering 33-year-old magician who studied under David Copperfield, performed alongside David Blaine and is now razzle-dazzling fans of his own with tricks involving cards, iPhones and the occasional, eye-popping levitation. Read more:

David Blaine Performs Magic For Baltimore Protesters After Underwater Stunt [PHOTOS]

David Blaine Performs Magic For Baltimore Protesters After Underwater Stunt [PHOTOS]

After apparently holding his breath underwater for 10 minutes, magician David Blaine took to the streets of Baltimore to perform tricks for protesters Wednesday. Hundreds of demonstrators had gathered there in the wake of the Monday funeral of Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old black man who died from injuries sustained during an arrest.

Blaine’s trip to the city was apparently spontaneous, as he hadn’t tweeted or promoted his appearance in advance. His last message on his official Twitter account showed him submerged in a tank of water with several fish swimming around him

Protesters generally seemed excited by Blaine’s free performance and shared pictures on Twitter. “It’s a little bit awesome to imagine the moment David Blaine saw the news and thought, ‘Gotta get down there and do some magic,’ ” one person wrote. “David Blaine is here in Baltimore, drawing a bigger crowd of youths with each trick,” another added.
