Las Vegas (CNN) – Not many cities evoke as many instant associations as Las Vegas.

Maybe you think of the Rat Pack, showgirls and mobsters sipping martinis. Or perhaps it’s bachelorettes and bros on a bender that everyone hopes won’t end up on Facebook.

It’s a town whose story has been told thousands of times, in books such as “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” movies such as “Casino” and televisions shows from “Vega$” to “Vegas.”

But there’s much more to the city than just sin.

More than half a million people live here – about 800,000 if you include the adjacent suburb of Henderson. Plenty of slots and cocktails still abound, but the arts and cultural scene is blossoming and a tech boom is building.

Teller Wins Lawsuit Over Copied Magic Trick Performance..

Teller is widely known as a great magician, but he has just pulled off a feat that is without equal among his peers. He has prevailed in a lawsuit against another magician who put up a copycat illusion on YouTube.

Technically speaking, magic tricks aren’t copyrightable. In a ruling by a Nevada federal court on Thursday, U.S. District Judge James Mahanstates that explicitly.

What is protectable under copyright law is pantomimes, the art of conveying emotions, actions and feelings by gestures. The theatrical medium where magicians work has some of the flavor of pantomimes, and Teller has used it to his advantage.

When David Copperfield reigned as king of small-screen magic, the ancient genre was a staple of evening entertainment and every talent quest and variety show included a budding showman peddling his bag of tricks. But since then, apart from the occasional special, and Penn and Teller’s gallant but counterproductive attempt to rekindle interest with their 2011 trick-busting contest, Fool Us, television magic seems to have done a disappearing act. In a time when digital sophistication makes wonderment commonplace, magic has been relegated to dedicated Foxtel channels and the odd entrant on Australia’s Got Talent. Even the 2014 Royal Variety Performance cut its traditional magic act, with one Green Guide reader lamenting, “What a bore. Where were the acrobats and magicians?”

Strand-Capitol adds magicians Penn & Teller to comedy lineup..

Strand-Capitol adds magicians Penn & Teller to comedy lineup..

The Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in York City has added some name recognition to its comedy lineup.

Magicians Penn & Teller will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16, the Strand announced Tuesday in a news release.

The comedy duo has performed together for almost 40 years, doing shows in Las Vegas, on Broadway and as part of TV appearances and world tours.

Tickets are on sale now to Strand members and go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 25. Tickets range in price from $66 to $79.
