THE MAGIC ROADSHOW #158
September 2014

Hello Friends

I hope this issue finds all of you well and rested. If you are a new subscriber, we Welcome you to our community of like minded folks who enjoy what is now officially, the ‘art’ of magic.

Summer is ‘almost’ over.. thank goodness. The older I get, the less I like hot weather. I actually ‘think’ better in cooler weather, it seems, and my production increases. Since I do so much of my work at night, maybe the shorter days are conductive to creativity.

I will be at TRICS ( Carolina Close-Up Convention ) before the next issue publishes, so I should mention it now. Be sure to look me up if you’re there… There will be a star studded lineup this year, for what many top magicians consider their favorite convention. Check it out at: http://tricsconvention.com/

Thanks to all of you who went to my survey page last month and gave me your opinion. It really does help with the planning of features for the Roadshow. In fact, I have based this entire issue around one of the central questions. It seems most of you enjoy ‘free stuff’.. so I’ve declared this the ‘free issue’ and included PDF after PDF, including a couple of PDFs you’d have to pay for anywhere else…  -IF- you ‘forgot’ to take the survey, it’s not too late. It takes all of a couple of minutes and there is nothing to fill in, only a few boxes to click, and nothing other than your answers are recorded..       http://esurv.org/?u=magicroadshow

A Special Note on these download links.. I have obtained all the links in this issue via Google searches. All download links are indexed in Google and the ebooks are NOT contained on my site (except where noted), nor are they pirated .rar downloads.  Downloads originate from the site in the links and are not the responsibility of Magic Roadshow. We ONLY offer what we consider to be fair and rightful ebooks, either located in the public domain or published with permission from the author. I could easily offer five times as many if I published questionable downloads..

Seriously.. let me know your thoughts! EMAIL ME  ( [email protected] )

Million Dollar Magic – ( for the flat broke magician ) –  Free PDF

This was first published by yours truly as ‘Magic Tips and Tricks’. I’ve re-edited portions of the book and added thirty plus pages of MathMagic not in the original. You can still obtain this on Amazon, among other places, in hard cover, but I’ve decided to let readers download the PDF version for a short while. I WILL take this link down after a month or so to prevent the search engines from indexing it.

Aside from a number of math magic effects, you’ll find chapters on card magic, mentalism, close up magic, and a number of tips and short articles on a wide variety of subjects. The ebook runs about 130 pages in length. Note the password needed to complete the download.

Hugard’s Annual of Magic 1937 –  Free PDF

Jean Hugard, co-author of Royal Road to Card Magic, published his own magazine, The Magic Annual, from 1937 to 1939. I’ve not located years 1938 and 1939 as a legitimate download, but I did find 1937 in the public domain.

This 1937 annual has 10 sections covering: Cigar and cigarette tricks, Miscellaneous tricks, Coin tricks, card tricks, Tricks with silks, Billiard ball tricks, useful gimmicks, impromptu tricks, stage tricks, and a section on illusions.

Body Tricks –   Free PDF

Tricks with your fingers, arms, nose, eyes, body, mind, head, and feet.. levitations, illusions with body parts, jokes, feats of strength, and an array of tricks that can be performed, mostly, without props. This is the perfect PDF to supplement your act and get laughs, not to mention raise a few eyebrows, at a moments notice.

Although published in 2006, the Roadshow got permission from the author, Stephen Ablett, to offer you guys BODY TRICKS au gratis.

“Have you ever been asked to perform a trick, but left your pack of cards in the other
coat? Or asked to borrow a coin, and no-one has one? I have. There is nothing worst
than being asked to do a trick, and failing to perform. As a professional magician we
should all be prepared, but as a human we forget things and no-matter how many
tricks with ordinary objects we know, sometimes they are just not available when you
need them.”

This collection of tricks can be performed by anyone, at any time. All it takes is a
little practice.

Royal Road to Card Magic – All 300+ pages – Free PDF

Regarded as one of the true classics of magic and created by two noted authorities on magic,  RRTCM features complete, easy-to-understand explanations of card sleights, shuffles, flourishes, the glide, the glimpse, false shuffles and cuts, the pass, the classic force and many other techniques.

Mastering these sleights will enable you to perform over 100 impressive feats of card magic, including Thought Stealer, Gray’s Spelling Trick, Do As I Do, Now You See It, Obliging Aces, Rapid Transit, Kangaroo Card, A Tipsy Trick and many others.

RRTCM is generously illustrated with over 120 classic line drawings that bring the effects to life and make following the text simple. Although some think of RRTCM as a beginner to intermediate text, this introduction to card conjuring certainly deserves a place in every library.

“The pedagogical method adopted by the authors—that of first explaining the “mechanics” of a sleight, and then showing its practical application in several striking feats— is an admirable one in teaching conjuring. Not only is the student led, step by step, from the easy to the more difficult and from the simple to the more complicated sleight, but throughout the process he gets encouragement and enjoyment in the actual performance, from the very outset, of really first-rate magic. Indeed, the amateur who masters no more than the first chapter of The Royal Road to Card Magic will have at his command a half-dozen very good card tricks!”

EXPERT CARD TECHNIQUE: Close-Up Table Magic –  Free PDF
by JEAN HUGARD and FREDERICK BRAUE (all 300+ pages)

To quote directly from Expert Card Technique…

IN NO OTHER BRANCH of the art of conjuring has such progress been made as in sleight of hand with cards. Beginning with the half-dozen basic sleights known to the magician of a hundred years ago, there have slowly been evolved new methods of performing these sleights, and new sleights the purpose of which is to achieve results never dreamed of by the earliest experts. The progress of the art is milestoned by the great conjuring classics—Secrets of Conjuring and Magic, Sachs’ Sleight of Hand, the great Hoffmann trinity, Modern Magic, More Magic and Later Magic, and Lang Neill’s The Modem Conjurer.
These were supplemented at the turn of the century by The Expert at the Card Table and The Art of Magic, two fine books which recorded the newer improvements in the art, the former of which even today will be found in the library of every card conjurer; perhaps no other book in all the list of conjuring books has been so avidly read, so affectionately regarded.

Magic and MultiMagic Squares..   Free PDF

Completing a three wide square with 9 blocks is one thing.. completing a square with over 400 blocks is something else. If you have ANY interest in magic squares, this is THE work for your library… This thesis by Christian Eggermont may not be the longest work on magic squares.. but it’s the most thorough, in my opinion.

“Magic squares are remarkable squares of numbers. They have been found around the globe and some are ancient. A few are even famous and have legends associated with them. The most famous is the 3×3 square to the left. If you can believe the stories about this square, it was found by the mythical Chinese emperor Yu (circa 2200BC) on the back of a turtle climbing out of the yellow river. Historians have been able to trace it back to the third century before Christ, which makes this square somewhere between 2300 and 4200 years old! It is commonly called the Lo Shu.”

Where did it Originate and Who Should I Credit – Resources

Those words have been tossed about by every ethical magician in modern times. I have to admit, as I’m sure some of you have noticed, I’m not the best at knowing the origination of magic. I have a rather narrow view, in that I can trace effects back to the point I first familiarized myself with them.. then, my road ends. There were few resources to aid an honest country boy.. until now.

Thanks to my buddy, Jim Canaday, at http://TheMagicPortal.us for bringing these two sites to my attention. Both posses amazing range and depth. When you want to credit and aren’t sure where to start.. start here…

Introduction to Card Magic –  Free PDF
by Roberto Giobbi (150+ pages)

Card College books and Card College Light Trilogy are among the true ‘classics’ of modern magic.. and Roberto Giobbi is one of the most popular authors among the many. That’s why we are happy to re-introduce this PDF to our readers.

“Now, that you enter the fascinating and mysterious world of card magic, starting out on a journey that will accompany you for a part or maybe even for the rest of your life, you may have doubts to consider yourself a magical artist just because you picked up a deck of cards and know how to do a few simple tricks. You are right, of course. The fact that somebody writes a poem doesn’t automatically make him a poet, as little as buying a brush, paint and canvas makes him a painter. But don’t worry about these things yet – if they are meant to be, they will come with time. Rather look at the thought expressed above as your vision that shall guide you on the pleasant, instructive and beautiful journey we are about to undertake together..”

Magician’s Apprentice Volume 1 –  Free PDF

After publishing volume 2 of the Magician’s Apprentice ebook in a recent issue, I had several readers ask if I had access to volume 1. At the time I couldn’t find it online, only for sale at a site or two. Well, I’ve found it on the site that originally published it. Volume 2 was full of thumb tip tricks and tips.. volume 1 is full of card magic. I did notice that some of the tricks require props that obviously came with the hardcover edition of the book. They will be hard to perform without the props. A chapter on Svengali effects will be of note..
Titled ‘Card Tricks Unshuffled’, it contains chapters on the following:

CHAPTER 1 CARD TRICK TECHNIQUES
CHAPTER 2 GIMMICK CARD TRICKS
CHAPTER 3 X-RAY GLASSES
CHAPTER 4 SHAVED DECK
CHAPTER 5 SECRET ENIGMA DECK
CHAPTER 6 SVENGALI DECK

SCIENCE PUZZLERS  –  Free PDF
Martin Gardner
Illustrated by Anthony Ravielli

Science Puzzlers is just one of the many excellent works by the master of mathmagic, Martin Gardner. I’ve quoted from his intro to give you a full overview of this PDF…

“In selecting experiments for this volume, I have tried to keep in mind two guiding principles. First, avoid experiments requiring special equipment that cannot be found in an average home. Second, concentrate on experiments that, in addition to being amusing, astonishing, or entertaining, also teach something of importance about science.

Some of the tricks in this book, I must confess, were known to the ancient Greeks, but many are quite new and now appear in printed form for the first time. Who invents these clever diversions? I sometimes suspect that many of them are the brain-children of distinguished scientists who have not lost their boyhood spirit of play. Such a man was Robert W. Wood, a professor of physics at Johns Hopkins University. When he was not working on important projects or writing technical papers, Doctor Wood
amused himself by playing practical jokes on his colleagues, exposing pseudo-Scientists and spirit mediums, writing science fiction, and helping the police solve bombing mysteries. His quaint little book of drawings and verse, How to tell the Birds from the Flowers, has been reprinted in paperback (New York: Dover Publications).

Several decades ago, when there was a spirited public debate over whether pitched baseballs could really be made to curve, Wood devised a simple demonstration. He took a large flat rubber band, cut it to make one long strip, then wound it tightly around a Ping-Pong ball. By holding the free end of the band he was able to snap the ball forward, at the same time imparting to it a strong spin. The curving of
the ball’s path was clearly visible. (This experiment was not included in this collection because huge flat rubber bands are hard to come by, but Bernoulli’s principle, which explains why baseballs curve, is easily demonstrated with a spool and card as explained.)

To get the greatest value from this collection, try to follow up the experiments with exploratory reading. For example, after you have learned how to release a tangled couple, look up ‘topology’ in a modern encyclopaedia. Better still, read the chapter on it in the fascinating book, Mathematics and imagination, by James Newman and Edward Kasner (G. Bell & Sons Ltd., 1949). Do not just set fire to a lump of sugar and then forget about it. See what you can learn about catalysts and the role they
play in important chemical changes.

One other suggestion. If you want to entertain your friends—and some of the experiments in this book are superb party tricks—practice them a few times before you demonstrate. ‘Harpooning’ a raw potato with a drinking straw, for instance, is an amazing parlour trick, but you may have to damage many straws before you get the knack. Sherwood Anderson wrote a famous short story, ‘The Triumph of the
Egg.’ about a restaurant owner who failed miserably in trying to show a customer how to put an egg into a bottle. If the poor fellow had only practised his trick a few times, he might not have forgotten what to do to make it work.

If you know, or should you invent, an unusual science experiment that is not in this collection, drop me a note about it in care of the publisher. I cannot promise that I will find time to answer your letter, but I shall be most grateful, and perhaps I will be able to use your discovery in a second collection,.”

Modern Coin Manipulation  –  Free PDF

Embracing Every Sleight and Subtlety Invented and Known..
T. Nelson Downs

Some folks consider this THE work on coin magic and manipulation. Between this PDF and Modern Coin Magic, you should have enough material to keep you busy for quite some time.. A little something about T. Nelson Downs from http://Wikipedia.com …

Rare volume by turn-of-the-century master features detailed explanations and diagrams of numerous feats with coins — most prominent among them the author’s world-famous “The Miser’s Dream.” Also included are scores of other fakes and sleights, including passing a coin through the bottom of a hat, the money-producing cigarette, the obedient coins, and many more.

Downs never took any training in magic; all his tricks were self-taught. By the age of 12, he became an expert in card and coin manipulation. He further mastered his skills by the age of 17, when he took a job as a railway telegrapher and had plenty of time to practice with coins.

In September 1895, Downs decided to quit his telegraphy job and launch a career in magic. At first, he toured Iowa with his partner, Sam Spiegel, a mandolinist. By 1897, Downs concentrated only on the coin tricks — a rare specialization at that time, and established himself in vaudeville, which was a popular avenue for magicians.

The success of Downs career allowed him to get booked into Tony Pastor’s New York theater, and to London’s Palace Theatre soon after that.

At the peak of his career, Downs traveled frequently, and performed at royal courts. While performing his tricks, he could palm up to 60 coins at a time. One of his most famous tricks was “The Miser’s Dream”, in which he seemed to pull countless coins out of the thin air.

In 1912, at the age of 42, Downs decided to retire in Iowa. After moving back to Marshalltown, he rarely left the area. Not quite comfortable with idle retirement, Downs kept busy by opening a vaudeville house on Main Street, a few blocks from his own home at 7 South 3rd Avenue. He also sold a line of magic equipment. Many visitors, other magicians, streamed to his home to share gossip and the latest tricks as well as to brush elbows with the famous sleight of hand artist. The most famous of these visitors included Chung Ling Soo (William Robinson), Mrs. Harry Houdini, and Dai Vernon.

The Secret Life of Uri Geller BBC Documentary- Uncut !

This 1 1/2 hour documentary, first broadcast on the BBC, reveals what some call the ‘secret’ life of famed mentalist Uri Geller.

“On camera and in interview, Geller still remains coy about his espionage activities. Nonetheless, the psychic acknowledges that his handlers once asked him to use telepathy to stop a pig’s heart. He refused, knowing that if he had succeeded, the next target would almost certainly have been a human…”

“I tried to execute missions that were positive,” Geller claims. “I said ‘no’ to dark things.”

“Jayanti didn’t rely on Geller’s own cryptic testimony. Instead, he spoke to the high-level officials involved in recruiting and using him. These include scientists from The Stanford Research Institute as well as senior CIA operatives. Among the interviewees with first hand knowledge of Geller’s psychic spying activities are former CIA officer Kit Green, Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell (the sixth man to walk on the moon), physicists Russell Targ and Hal Puthoff, and retired US army colonel John Alexander (of The Men Who Stared At Goats fame). A Brit, Nick Pope, once the British Government’s UFO boffin, also puts in an appearance. We also learn about Geller’s stint as a psychic bodyguard for Mexican President Jose Lopez Portillo.” Writes the Independent.co.uk…

Regardless of your belief or opinion, I believe you’ll find this a very interesting study of one of the most memorable figures in the world of magic, mentalism, and illusion…

Physical Comedy in Magic – An In-depth Study with Videos

Physical comedy in magic is not for everyone. Some magicians have built a career around it; David Williamson, Harry Anderson, Mac King, Silvester the Jester, and the late Carl Ballentine are good examples, but others come off flat or inexperienced when they venture outside the box.

Tanya Solomon writes extensively in the blog, All Fall Down, about the perils of performing physical magic and the performers who make it a way of life.. The ten videos are priceless…

“Startling transformations. Hubris. Violations of logic and laws of nature. The basic elements of stage magic would seem to make it fertile soil for physical comedy.

And yet most “comedy magic” comes more from the stand up comic tradition (Mac King, Harry Anderson, and David Williamson, to name a few funny ones). When physical comedy is used, it usually follows the narrative of the arrogant magician whose tricks fail and expose themselves. The classic act of this type is the late Carl Ballantine’s (video) Done well, by performers like Otto Wessely and Kohl & Co., this is great comedy. But when John gave me the chance to pick out some favorite funny magic, I decided to represent a less common type of act: one in which physical comedy is used and the magic (though not necessarily the magician!) is effective.”

THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE –  Free PDF
Stephen R. Covey
#1 National Bestseller with over TEN Million sold…

During part of my tenure as publisher of the Magic Roadshow I worked as an operations manager for an Inc.500 company. I came in contact with many ‘important’ business folks, people important to the growth and future of our business. Yes, I made trips to Florida to learn directly from the company owners, but aside from binders full of operation how-to, the ONLY book the company asks me to read (and gave me..) was this one…

“In more than 25 years of working with people in business, university, and marriage and family settings, I have come in contact with many individuals who have achieved an incredible degree of outward success, but have found themselves struggling with an inner hunger, a deep need for personal congruency and effectiveness and for healthy, growing relationships with other people.
I suspect some of the problems they have shared with me may be familiar to you.
I’ve set and met my career goals and I’m having tremendous professional success. But it’s cost me my personal and family life. I don’t know my wife and children anymore. I’m not even sure I know myself and what’s really important to me. I’ve had to ask myself — is it worth it?”

Make a Magic Stain Eraser With Three Ingredients You Already Have – Resource
Victoria Dawson Hoff

This is sort of like the search results you get when you google ‘magic news’. Articles like this trip the search term wire and pop up at inopportune moments. I found this one interesting, in part because I’m notorious for spilling ‘stuff’ down the front of my shirt. I think it comes from eating way too many meals behind a steering wheel.

“Here at ELLE, we certainly love our clothes, but we also love cookies. And wine. And coffee. And sometimes, things get a little messy. We’re human. But when the inevitable does happen and we suddenly notice a spot on our favorite skirt, what’s an editor to do?”

“This week’s DIY was actually inspired by such a request. One unnamed editor spilled a little something on her shirt last weekend and put the call out for a recipe for “homemade Tide to Go.” After some research, we found that not only is this possible, but also you likely don’t need to look any further than under your sink and inside your medicine cabinet to find the ingredients. It turns out a concoction of dish soap, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda will do the trick—and it’s basically the stuff of sorcery. We sprayed, we blinked, and the stain—a splash of particularly robust Cabernet Sauvignon—was gone.”

Magic Roadshow #157

Magic Roadshow #157

MAGIC ROADSHOW #157

August 2014

Hello Friends..

I am SO glad to be presenting a new issue of the Magic Roadshow Journal of Magic. If you’re a new reader.. Welcome! I sincerely hope you find something of interest..

It’s been an interesting summer…. so far. We’ve not experienced a 100 degree day, which is a real rarity, but we’ve had twice as many 90 degree days as last year. That’s sort of where I stand.. hot, but not fried. The older I get the less I enjoy summer.. I’m ready for fall, for football, for the changing of the leaves, long sleeves, cool nights, scary kids, turkey, Santa.. OK, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself.

Just got back from the Smokey Mountains and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. l caught Keith Fields show, “A Brit of Magic” while in Gatlinburg, which was an interesting bit of magic theatre, performed by a seasoned professional. I would recommend it, except I think his block of time is coming to an end and I’m not sure when he returns.. Check his website.

I hope you guys have visited MAGIC NEWS.org on a regular basis. I’ve added so much stuff.. every day it seems. I’ve published sneak previews of the CARBONARO EFFECT weekly, as well as advanced info on Penn and Teller’s FOOL US and MASTERS OF ILLUSION.. not to mention new magic shows in the work for the SYFY channel and COMEDY CENTRAL. Oh, didn’t know about those? Not my fault….   http://MagicNews.org

Well, I’m going to refer to this issue as ‘The Teaching Issue”. There are a number of interesting resources to aid in improving your magic, as opposed to adding to.. I hope you find it interesting.

I know you guys are ready to get on with the (Road) Show.. so remember, if you have questions or comments.. EMAIL ME  ( [email protected] )

Remember, You don’t have to have a reason to email me.. do it to say “Hi”, do it to say “Happy Labor Day”, do it because your wife is not speaking to you…

INTERVIEW: HANNIBAL   (Christopher Hannibal)

I keep up with magicians.. it’s my job. I can honestly say if there’s one magician who’s stock is rising faster than any other.. it’s Hannibal, Christopher Hannibal, Chris for short.  Hannibal is sort of a ‘local’, residing and performing his magic in Charlotte NC.. but this past year I’ve kept up with his travels, and watched as he regularly flew around the country, speaking at corporate events and performing his special brand of “Unique Inspirational Theatre”.  One week he’s in Charlotte.. and the next he’s in San Francisco or Philly. One day he’s performing in a local restaurant.. and the next he’s wowing seasoned professionals at The Magic Castle. Hannibal has literally performed here and abroad for years, abet quietly. He is a magician’s magician. He is the guy ‘name’ magicians go out of their way to watch.

Hannibal knows the ins and outs of life on the street. He’s performed his brand of street magic in downtown Charlotte for a number of years. At one point Hannibal had developed a thriving comedy club career. He was on the road for months, opening for acts like the Smothers Brothers, Damon Wayans, Brian Regan, The Amazing Jonathan and Jeff Dunham. ‘Home’ brought him back to Charlotte. “I was away from home and missing important things, like good report cards, art projects, just time hanging out with my kids… so I consciously walked away from the comedy clubs, left them behind and basically restarted here in Charlotte and saved my family life.” (Charlotte Observer)

Today, a schedule of corporate trade shows, lectures, motivational speaking, street magic, restaurant magic, and “magic theatre’ keeps Hannibal busy.. and racking up frequent flyer miles.

If you attended the joint IBM/SAM convention recently, in St. Louis, you watched Hannibal stun the crowd.. and walk away with a North American Close-Up award.. and an invitation to represent all of North America at FISM in Italy next summer. So, although we may consider Hannibal a ‘local’ guy, the world of magic has claimed him as their own.

_______________

Rick: Hello Chris and Welcome to the Magic Roadshow. First, thanks for taking time out of your super-busy schedule to share with our readers. Tell everyone a little something about your early years in magic..

Chris: I was working for a theme park as a scriptwriter and puppeteer. One of my tasks was to draw the attention of guests to impending shows, so I created a ‘street magician’ character.

When the job suddenly went away, I took the magician out on the street for real … and I never looked back.

Rick: Congratulations on your performance at the recent IBM-SAM Convention Close-Up Contest that earned you a trip to Rimini, Italy in July of next year for the FISM World Championships of Magic. I cannot think of a higher honor.. How has the honor changed your perception of yourself as a magician?

Chris: I am pleased that my peers find my work worthy of inclusion, it is indeed a very high honor. As far as my perception of my own work, it hasn’t changed at all: my core philosophy remains intact.

Rick: Of the five honorees, Michael Dardant, Shin Lim, Alberto Lorenzo, Reuben Moreland and yourself, who among the other four left the best impression on you?

Chris: I don’t want this to sound … arrogant or anything, but I didn’t watch any of the other acts during competition. I am familiar with these fine gentlemen, and backstage they were professional and lots of fun to hang out with, but from performance I was focused on delivering my best. My biggest competition was myself.

Rick: Will you change your routine in any way for Rimini?

Chris: There will be some polishing and tweaking of incidental points, but the act will remain the same.

Rick: Back to Charlotte.. you are well-known for both your street performances and corporate work. At one time, you performed in many comedy clubs throughout the South. Why the change of direction, and how would you best describe your current specialty (specialties)?

Chris: In the spring of 2001 I walked away from the comedy clubs. The work was fun, the pay was excellent, and getting better, due to diligence … but I was losing my soul. I was away from home too many weeks out of the year and my family life was starting to suffer from it. The temptations of the road were becoming harder to resist and I found myself congratulating myself too often. (Which is a dangerous form of vanity)

One night I woke up in a hotel and I couldn’t remember the city I was in or what day it was. I didn’t remember if I had called home before going to bed. I had phone numbers written on my hand and two different room keys on the desk. It shook me, badly.  The next morning I called up my agent and canceled all my dates, then drove home.

I took my act back to the streets, restaurants and bars and made a new game plan that involved balance between family and work. I may not get famous, but I’m wealthy in spirit.

My current specialty is storytelling and fulfilling my client’s needs via speaking, magic and creative writing.

Rick: How important is comedy to your performance? Do you try to work out the comedy beforehand, or do you simply let it happen? Maybe a combination of the two..?

Chris: Comedy is one of several bows in my quiver. I use it for ice breaking and direction during the early part of my act. It establishes my character and relaxes the audience. I script a lot, I write down way more than I ever actually use on stage. Those scripts are in my head and I can pull from them as the situation requires. I tend jazz quite a bit as I learn the level of the audience, their tolerance and their group sense of humor. It’s also a fantastic way to recognize those in places of respect.

Rick: My favorite question for magicians – how do you practice?

Chris: I practice ‘moves’ during downtime: stoplights, airport terminals, flights … I practice routines and acts at my rehearsal table. I have a table set up in my home that is used only for practice and full act rehearsal. There’s a video camera handy to study different perspectives. Once a routine is where I’m happy with it I generally take it out to the street. Then I watch the audience to see what needs polish.

Rick: You describe your magic as “Unique Inspirational Theatre”. Theatre is important to your performance and certainly a lofty goal for any magician. What differs between a conventionally scripted show and magic theatre?

Chris: Most magic acts are a series of unrelated short stories. Better acts are a series of short stories bound by a central theme or (better yet) a character. Magic Theatre is a complete story, and the effects are incidental illustrations of story as a whole. Magic Theater uses the core of all live presentations: atmosphere, music, lighting, etc. but it doesn’t stop there. Scripting, audience relationship, pacing, speaking, technique, direction … all the best of the magic world and the theatre world combined.

Rick: I’ve read where you refer to yourself as a “self-professed liar”. I’m sure there’s a perfectly good reason for this bit of self-refutation. Does this phrase describe your (magic) persona, or is it something you ‘fit’ into your routine and use more as a prop or talking point.?

Chris: I consider myself an artist, a master of my craft. Picasso famously stated that “All art is a lie, and it is the artist’s job to convince the world that his lies are true.”

As a magician and an artist I must lie to you in order for you to see the truth of my message. As a gentleman I must inform you ahead of time of my intentions: I’m going to lie to you. I am a liar, but in my lies there is a greater truth. Let’s discover it together.

Rick: Hannibal is, in your words, “Primal rather than Sophisticated..” How does this impact your magic?

Chris: Hannibal will not use anything that is simply a magic prop. It must make sense or have a function in the real world. Hannibal would never perform an effect simply to show off his magic: his magic must have a reason for existing. It must illustrate a point or move the story forward.

By way of example: The Linking Rings can be elegant, beautiful and (in the right hands) magical. Hannibal will not perform The Linking Rings because they are simply wrong for his character and stated purpose.

Rick: Wayne Kawamoto, Max Maven, Eric Jones,  Paul Romhany, Doc Eason, and our mutual friend, Scott Robinson, are but a handful of fellow magicians who consider your 2 DVD set, “Hannibal – The Truth From A Liar”, a treasure trove of magic and a systematic exposition and methodical discussion of both your handling and theatre. Among the various genres of magicians, who’s your target market? Are you comfortable putting your full show ‘out there’, for anyone to copy? How long before we fans can expect another?

Chris: Among magicians, my target market is the human. Human enough to allow themselves to be taken by the story. I have no problem putting my show out there. My material is so uniquely Hannibal that it will be extremely difficult for the honest performer to copy. To those who want to try, I wish you much luck.

As to another … well, it took twenty years for this to come to fruition., but now I have the formula. Perhaps only half that time for the next. I live with material for a very long time.

Rick: Tell us something about the concept of ‘Sleight Club’…

Chris: Sleight Club was the brainchild of several like-minded magicians who grew weary of the glad handing and false encouragement of the typical magic club.

At SC you bring your work to the table for honest critique. All aspects are considered, from technique to character to presentation. Effects are stripped down and rebuilt. There are no egos and no holds barred. The magic and the magician are improved via the forge.

Rick: I have to ask about your recent appearance at The Magic Castle. What was the One memory or One moment that made you say “Oh yeah… they’ll not forget Hannibal” ??

Chris:  I had just finished up a show in the Parlor where several ‘names’ were in attendance. There was a knock on the door and I opened to find Max Maven. He took the time to stop in and tell me how delightful he found my act. That moment will stay with me. An artist that I admired for years appreciated my work AND went out of his way to let me know. Oh, yeah …

Rick: Are you sure there’s no future FISM champions at home, aside from yourself ??

Chris: Absolutely positive: my children all pursue different crafts, and they play from the heart. They are excellent in their endeavors … but not a single magician among them.

I do hold out hope for the (eventual) grandchildren, though.

Rick: The Magic Roadshow wishes you the BEST, particularly in the FISM competition next July. Thanks for taking the time to share some of your thoughts and philosophies with our readers…

Magnetic Colors – A Principle

Magnetic Colors – A Technique

I enjoy giving you guys a pathway to a successful effect, without necessarily providing all the dotted i’s and crossed t’s. Lets face it.. most guys will change up an effect to suit their style anyway. This principle, established by Gene Finnell and Norman Gilbreath and written up by Karl Fulves, among others, is a personal favorite. There are a fair number of magicians who understand this principle.. and an equally fair number of magicians who don’t. It’s these magicians who are most fooled, as they THINK they know a truth, which is actually NOT a truth.

Ask a spectator to cut the deck and complete the cut. Ask the spectator to cut the deck a few more times. If you aren’t comfortable with the spectator cutting the deck, cut the deck several times yourself. Now comes the moment of deception. Ask the spectator to give the deck a riffle shuffle. Ask if they can perform a perfect riffle shuffle. Tell them that your riffle shuffles aren’t perfect.. and that you don’t expect theirs to be perfect either.

Once the riffle shuffle is complete, the proposition is made. It can be anything you want it to be. You’re betting on how long it will take the spectator to turn up a PAIR of red cards, or a pair of black cards, or betting against the odds of ALL pairs being one red and one black. The fact is.. despite the deck being riffle shuffled, if you begin with a deck where the red and black cards are alternated throughout, if the cards are turned over in pairs, one will be red and one black.

Magicians assume that, barring a perfect shuffle, the deck will be un-ordered to some degree because the shuffle wasn’t perfect. Since the magician, or the spectator, know that their shuffle wasn’t perfect, they’ll bet against any possibility of an ordered deck.

The only ‘catch’ is this.. you must make sure that the deck is cut into two halves with a RED card on the bottom of one half and a BLACK card on the bottom of the other. You can cut the deck several times yourself and begin to riffle shuffle but, after you confirm the bottom cards are correct, say.. “Out of fairness, why don’t you shuffle the deck”.

Karl Fulves told the spectator he could mentally force him to shuffle the cards in a precise manner. As I mentioned, I use this as a betting proposition. There are many different ways to approach it if you put your thinking cap on, including a ‘demonstration’, a ‘force’, a ‘mental control’, a ‘prediction’.. etc.

I’ve been known to shuffle a deck a number of times while I talk. I then case the deck, begin to put it in my close-up case, and remember that I have ‘one more thing’ I want to show the spectator. Of course, I use the cover of the case to switch the deck with the prepared deck. Not only does the spectator/magician think they saw me shuffle the deck numerous times, but that, combined with their shuffle, makes the matching of red-black cards more than improbable.

Let me know YOUR favorite method.

Alice in Wonderland – A Mystery

Thankfully, I don’t have to explain the ‘magic’ behind Alice in Wonderland. Guys like Martin Gardner explained the complexity better than I could possibly hope to do. I’ve published the link to two pdf versions of Alice and her magical cast of characters. Download and enjoy…

Lewis Carroll was the pen name of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematician at Christ Church College, Oxford, England, and most mathematicians are cognizant that woven within the Alice story are many mathematical mysteries and aberrations.

__________

“Alice in Wonderland got its start as a simple story, told by a mathematics professor to a colleague’s daughter. It’s a strange story that seems to be the result of a drug trip, but is actually a scathing satire of the new-fangled math that the professor was seeing invade his area of study.

Most of us just enjoy the White Rabbit and the hookah-smoking caterpillar. But now you can understand the math in Alice without needing to be a math whiz.

Some people who read Alice in Wonderland find it a whimsical adventure into a world of fun little paradoxes. Other people consider it a creepy march through a world of characters who seem to be set on making life as frustrating as possible as manically as they can. Which side you see might possibly have some bearing on your view of the world. Alice isn’t just fun and games. Charles Dodgson — the real name of Lewis Carroll — added all those paradoxes and puzzles as he was poring over the new math that was springing up in the middle of the 1800s.

Carroll liked good old-fashioned no nonsense algebra and Euclidean geometry — areas of study that could prove things about the natural world. Suddenly math students, and even teachers, were using different mathematical methods to prove things like one and one not equaling two. It seemed to Carroll that they were just being difficult on purpose, so he skewered them in prose.”

http://io9.com/5907235/a-math-free-guide-to-the-math-of-alice-in-wonderland

__________

Here’s a little something you won’t find in the above free guide. Martin Gardner….. yes, THAT Martin Gardner, notes that Lewis Carroll begins ALICE IN WONDERLAND with:

“Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do; once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading..”

Gardner asks us to select one of the first twelve words.

“Starting on the next word, spell the word you chose, tapping a word for each letter. For example, if you selected the word ALICE, you spell A-L-I-C-E. Counting words for letters, this takes you to the word VERY. Then four words later we get BY. Keep going. Note the word on which your spelling chain ends. What’s the word?”

Did Carroll actually devise a cunning web of words intent on arriving at the word SISTER regardless of where you start.?  Could the depth of his embedded math extend for a century and depend on future generations to discover its secrets.?

According to the late Princeton physicist Martin Kruskal, who discovered what has become known as ‘Kruskal’s Principle’, there is a mathematical theorem at work that says, with a high degree of probability, a common sequence is eventually found in any long text and the same word will be zeroed in on.. Like a fair amount of Martin Gardner’s work, Kruskal’s principle first appeared in a magic periodical, Ibidem, under the title “Sum Total” in 1957 by Alexander F. Kraus.

Whether Kruskal’s principle explains away Carroll’s paradox remains to be seen. Maybe it’s a principle at work.. maybe it’s magic.

You decide.

14 Optical Illusions That Prove Your Brain Sucks

I’m not a great big fan of optical illusions, mainly because I don’t want to look at some seemingly spinning circle until my eyeballs melt. I have enough trouble with my eyes as it is.. But.. these illusions are more ‘mature’ by nature and are designed to largely fool your mind into seeing something that doesn’t exist.

“Your brain sucks. All our brains suck. Or let me put it another way: Our brains are actually really amazing, but they’re not nearly as infallible as we like to think they are.

Our brains filter through a constant tsunami of stimuli and piece the important parts together to recreate what we know as “reality.” And they do all this in damn-near real-time—which is really impressive if you think about it. But here’s the thing: a big chunk of what we consider “reality” actually consists of our brains making guesstimates.

We know this because researchers have devised ways to consistently fool our brains into seeing things they’re not really seeing—even when our brains know that’s not what they’re seeing. These little reality busters are known as “optical illusions.”

The music world lost one of it’s most iconic performers with the passing of Johnny Winter, the Texas guitar slinger who preserved the Blues for future generations.  Johnny found himself tormented at times with alcohol and drug use and abuse. Perhaps it was a necessity, as he, like some of the early blues legends, lived the blues. Popular at times.. and not so much at others, Johnny Winter never waivered, never gave up, never left the road. He was born to play the blues…

Here’s 10 interesting facts about Johnny I’m sure you didn’t know.. For instance, he was one of the very few performers actually paid to perform at Woodstock, about $3700.00, and then opted out of allowing his performance to be shown in the movie, as his manager felt nothing would ever come of Woodstock – The Movie. The movie made superstars of almost everyone featured in it..

Magic Roadshow #156

Magic Roadshow #156

MAGIC ROADSHOW  #156  –  July 2014

Hello Friends

Hi Y’all.. Welcome to a new issue of The Magic Roadshow – Journal of Magic. If this is your first, I sincerely hope you find something here that makes you want to come back next month. Yes, we do this each month, and have for over ten years. I bring up the ten year thing again this month because I’m STILL surprised we’ve managed to keep everything on track and civil till now. I have a very opinionated side, and I’m surprised I’ve managed to (generally) keep my mouth in check for so long. (Just as I’ve had to release some of my Facebook Friends and let them fly solo, I’m sure some have quietly let me run free as well..)

Also, if you’re new, or if you haven’t noticed, we publish each issue in a PDF format. (see the link to the right) You can download it as a PDF and read it on your desktop – or in you Kindle, print it, save it, share it.. you name it.

The little wife and I shared a very enjoyable 4th of July. Lots of good food, great weather, and very loud fireworks. I had hoped to have this issue published before the 4th, but I simply ran out of days. I hope all you guys and gals who celebrated Independence Day had a good one too.

Yes, I watched the World Cup. I pulled hard for the American team, but all the wishing in the world, and all the defense in the world, doesn’t take the place of a little offense. You can’t let your opponents take twice as many shots on goal as you.. and hope to make it to the finals.. Maybe next time…..

I have nothing else to report… except that the Carolina Panthers, who have their training camp here in Spartanburg each year, will come to town in THREE WEEKS.. and that officially signals the start of football season.. to me at least. High school, college, pro.. I watch it ALL.

Call of Duty – A Card Trick

This is a straight-forward effect that doesn’t require any complicated sleights, yet gives the spectator the impression that he/she is in total control… until the end.

Ask the spectator to cut and/or shuffle the deck. Glimpse the bottom card. You are going to force this card on the spectator. I try to keep things simple by using a force like that in this video..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MM7RTIm1mKc

(Spread the cards in the hand as shown.. As you are bringing the other hand to the deck to riffle, slide the bottom card over as in the video. Then, riffle the deck and stop when the spectator says stop. Separate the two halves, retaining the bottom card with the top half. Square it up and show the card to the spectator.)

All you’ve done is forced a card from a shuffled deck. You can use your favorite force to have any card selected. I think it’s strong to allow the spectator to shuffle the deck beforehand and use the bottom card as your force card, although it’s not necessary.

You could thumb a couple or three small packets off the top of the deck, turning each packet up, letting the spectator confirm there’s a fair mix of cards. After a few cards have been quickly flashed, note one about a dozen down, catch a pinkie break just above it, and riffle force it on the spectator. Just another of many methods – and one that doesn’t require glimpsing the bottom card.

After the spectator looks at the force card, lets assume it’s the King of Diamonds, I lay the card on the table, without looking at it, and let the spectator pick it up, comfirm that it’s the same card, and stick it back in the deck anywhere they want. Let him/her SHUFFLE THE DECK AGAIN. It doesn’t matter since you know their card anyway. Get the deck back, flip it face up, and say something like…

“Now it’s my turn to pick a card, actually two cards… but I get to cheat a little. I’m looking for two specific cards..” and as you thumb through the cards, look for the King of Diamonds. As soon as you find it.. stop.. “I’m looking for the Sargent”. As you say this look at the spectator. They’ll look at you, and you can separate the deck immediately beyond the King, and simply put this half under the half you have yet to thumb through.. moving the King to the bottom of the face up deck. Now look for two of the Jacks.. it doesn’t matter which ones.. and say ” There they are..” as you remove them and lay them face up on the table.

“The Jack is my favorite card. I’m a blue collar kind of guy and the Jack is a blue collar kind of Card. I think of the Jack as like a Sargent in the military. Ask anyone who has served and they’ll tell you it’s not the Generals or Captains who get the work done.. and it’s not the Majors or Lieutenants.. it’s the Sargent s. They are the ones who shoulder the responsibility when the orders come down the pipe. Directly, I’m going to instruct the Jacks to find your card, and I have absolute faith in their ability.”

“I’m going to deal cards off the deck one at a time. You tell me when to stop.”

Lay the top card face down on the table, (the King) and then the next, and next, and… Continue until the SPECTATOR SAYS ‘STOP’.

Pick up one of the Jacks, quietly putting a bend in it, and lay it face down on top of the remaining packet in your left hand. Scoop up the tabled cards, being sure to leave the King on bottom, and replace them face down on top of the Jack. (Feel free to use whatever method you need to use to be able to cut to the Jack afterwards. Crimp the corner, use a short card, etc.)

Your goal at this point is to get the King and Jack to the top. I utilize the bend/crimp to cut the Jack to the bottom, then Overhand shuffle the Jack and the card above it, the King, to the top. This is a sort of round about way, but it works for me…

You want the King on top and the Jack directly underneath.

Again deal cards off the top, asking the spectator to stop you whenever they wish. When they say ‘Stop’, you lay the second Jack on top of the left hand packet just as before, except a bend isn’t necessary this time. When the tabled cards are scooped up and put on top of the Jack.. everything is set. The cards are aligned Jack-King-Jack and your work is done.

Remind the spectator that THEY shuffled the deck both before the effect and after picking a card, and that THEY determined where the Jacks would go in the deck. You can now expand on the ability of our military to search and capture ANY low-down dog (card), anywhere in the world (deck). You can make it as simple, or as patriotic as your little heart desires. This is one of those tricks that gives the creative among you something to really expand and personalize.

All that remains is for you to ribbon spread the deck and reveal the King between the two Jacks. -OR- reveal the ‘capture’ any way you feel inclined.

You have a lot of leeway getting the key cards in position. I’m sure most of you have a favorite method of forcing a card, getting a card a dozen or so down in the deck,  and thumbing through a deck and getting a spectators card to the top. All I’ve done is given you my way.. Try this and let me know how it works for you…

Although this effect is something I worked out one night on my own.. there’s nothing proprietary about it. I’m sure it’s been performed in very similar ways by other magicians for many years.  Feel free to personalize it any way you want and claim it as your own..

The Folk Test – A Mentalism Test from Stewart James
Appeared in JINX, Issue# 35

The performer writes a prediction on a slip of paper and a spectator retains it. Two volunteer are each given a half of the pack and the first volunteer shuffles his half and selects a card while they are all in his own hands. Suppose he selects a four spot. He is handed a sheet of paper on which is printed a list of celebrity names. He counts to the fourth name which may be Houdini. The spectator opens the slip of paper and finds the name Houdini written thereon.

Another prediction is written by performer and given into the custody of spectator as before. The second volunteer shuffles his half of the deck and selects a card freely as did the first. We will say that this is a ten spot. The tenth name on the list may be Roosevelt. The prediction is read and found correct the second time. Any cards are used and there are no sleights or exchanges.

(Editors note: The magician creates four lists of ten names beforehand. Use whatever names you want. The ten names on each card are identical. The only difference in the cards is the name HOUDINI is the 2nd name on one card, 4th name on one, 6th name on one, and 8th name on one. The 10th name on each card, Roosevelt in this example, is the same on all cards. Aside from these two names, all the other names can be in any order, as they will not be used..)

There are only two rules to follow in making up four such lists. The name HOUDINI (the first prediction) is in the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th positions on each successive list. Also note that Roosevelt is the last, or tenth, name on each list.

The audience is only aware of one list as will be seen. Place them in the pocket arranged in rotation ready for instant separation, or, better still, put the first list in right coat pocket, second in lower right vest pocket, third in lower left vest pocket, and the fourth in left coat pocket.

Shift all court cards, nines and tens to the bottom of the deck. Separate this section from those above with a bridge. Start out by writing the name HOUDINI on a slip of paper and giving it to someone to hold. Give volunteer the top half of deck and have him shuffle, and select one card. State that the sopt cards will equal their face value and a court card will count ten. Let us say he draws a four spot. You remove the list of names from lower right vest pocket because you know HOUDINI is the fourth name on that particular one.

(Highest card volunteer can draw is an eight. If he selects a two, four, six, or eight, hand him the list with name in that position designated by his card. If he selects a one, three, five, or seven, hand his the list with the name at a position just one beyond the value of his card. Tell him to count down by marking off the names and not the next one.

After the first prophecy has been read, make another, writing ROOSEVELT. The second volunteer selects a card from his half of deck (lower). If he chooses a court card, which you previously stated would amount to ten, or a ten spot, have him count to the tenth name. If he gets a nine, have him mark off the names, and take the next.

A volunteer must not see the faces of the cards in the half of the deck from which he chooses one. At he conclusion both halves of the deck are shuffled together and not a clue remains. The performer may compile his own lists of the names, and can place the two to be selected in their proper positions. The feat is quite incomprehensible even to the average magician, as all appears so fair.

Eric Kenneway’s ‘ The Rubber Band Book –  Free PDF

Although this almost-50-page ebook is designed for younger folks, I found some very interesting tricks and projects in it..  It must be the kid in me. This would be an ideal ebook to share with, I hate to use the word children because that makes it sound as if it’s for YOUNG children.. and it’s not, but I’ll say ‘young ones’. Clicking the link opens the ebook and gives you a chance to see if it’s for you without having to download it…  To quote:

“In the following pages you will find all sorts of tricks, stunts, games and other enjoyable things to do with rubber bands. If you have a rubber band ready, you can start right away on some of the projects in Part 1 : (or this section is made up of things to do using rubber bands and nothing else.

Part 2 contains things to do using rubber bands with other odds and ends. You will need to collect a few empty matchboxes, one or two clothes pegs and things of that sort. None of these required objects should be difficult to find.

Part 3 contains instructions for making things which need, in addition to rubber bands, material such as balsa wood. There are also one or two projects here which do not require any special craft material but do require a certain amount of accurate measuring. So most of the things which are quick and easy to do appear at the front of the book, while Part 3 contains the things which may take a little more time as well as more material.”

Clever Conjuring Using Secret Science & Engineering –  Free PDF
Peter McOwan, Matt Parker, and Richard Garriott

Let’s get scientific..

“Science and engineering represent great opportunities for magic. In this book you will find some amazing and easy-to-do magic tricks based on secret chemistry, physics, engineering and maths, so you can entertain your friends and explore some clever science and engineering too.

I’ve been a keen magician and collector of magic props all my life. The wonders of science and magic have inspired me throughout my career, from the mythological computer worlds I created in my Ultima video game series, to performing the first full magic show in microgravity when I visited the International Space Station in 2008.”    Richard Garriott

This is a very interesting PDF for those of you who enjoy the scientific side of magic.. and I know there’s a few of you out there because we’ve communicated in the past. It may take a couple of minutes to download, as it’s a very visually loaded PDF.

I really like the “Instant Freezing Water Trick’ and ‘The Unburstable Balloon’.. but I like ’em all..

Rubber Band Through Stick – Video tutorial
FernandoP1 – Art Zone Productions

This is a very nice rubber band trick using a pencil, stick, straw, etc. If you’re familiar with Vinny Marini’s ‘Liquid Band’ then you uderstand the workings  of this effect.

Personally, I love a good band effect, assuming I can pull it off. I haven’t mastered this one.. but I like the way it looks when performed by Fernando. The penetration of the band through the object looks quite convincing.

Give it a try and let me know how it works for you. This is one of those effects that’s perfect for any place where pens, pencils, or straws are readily available. Sounds like it would be ideal for restaurant workers…

Andy Field’s Ambitious Card Trick Tutorial – video

This is roughly twenty minutes of instruction, teaching one of the top three or four card tricks in all of magic. To quote Wikipedia…

“The Ambitious Card, or Elevator Card, is a magic effect in which a playing card seems to return to the top of the deck after being placed elsewhere in the middle of the deck. This is a classic effect in card magic and serves as a study subject for students of magic. Most performing card magicians will have developed their own personal Ambitious Card routine.”

“The effect is often credited to French magician Gustav Alberti, in the mid-19th century. However, there is a related idea in Ponsin’s Nouvelle Magie Blanche Devoilée, published in 1854, that might precede that.”

Keith teaches his method, which is smooth and rapid.. not so rapid as to make it appear something is happening that is un-natural. If you don’t have YOUR version of The Ambitious Card, this is a good tutorial to watch… Keith offers up a number of performance tips and hints to help develop your personalized version of this all time classic…

Impromptu ACAAN – Tutorial

OK.. while we’re talking about The Ambitious Card, we may as well talk about Any Card At Any Number.. the impromptu version. This effect is made possible with one move. One move, well done, and you have a version of ACAAN that can be performed any time, with any deck, without any prep. Actually, there is a little prep required for the effect to work, but the prep is performed during the presentation.. and not before.

This is NOT a very complicated trick to learn. In fact, the tutorial is about six and a half minutes. All that’s required is a deck of cards and a shirt pocket. This is a version I can see some of you guys giving an honest go.. Let me know how it works for you. I don’t believe in hype.. I believe in the real world. I believe in audience reaction, and I don’t consider other magicians to be part of the ‘audience’. I trust the response I get from my wife more so than the response I get from fellow magicians. So, when I ask for your thoughts.. I hope your thoughts are based on the responses YOU get/got from the lay people you performed this effect for…

Bill Malone’s ‘On The Loose’ – Videos

Bill Malone’s ‘On The Loose’ dvd set is one of the classics of magic. The folks who were there
were witness to one of the greatest singular performances in all of magic. L&L has successfully sold this series for several years, which includes the tutorials. These videos are the performance only, as sometimes it’s pure pleasure to watch a true entertainer when he’s ‘in the zone’…

“For the last 25 years, Bill has made his living performing magic and along the way, he’s made numerous appearances on national television (including NBC’s “World’s Greatest Magic” and “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous”) in addition to performing for high profile clients that, if listed, would read like a “Who’s Who” of corporate America.”

“With Bill Malone, it’s all about presentation, style and timing, so sit back and enjoy your front row seats for one of the funniest magicians on the planet. You’re entering the Malone Zone—and Bill is on the loose!”

The video is in three parts and totals about 65 minutes.

THREE FROM JIM – Resource and videos

If you’re a regular reader of the Roadshow, you’re well aware that I find sites and resources anywhere I can. Google and Bing are always dependable.. and so is the MAGIC PORTAL.  I get a variety of good links from Jim Canaday and his MAGIC PORTAL newsletter.  He publishes about once a month.. and although it’s not as long-winded as the Roadshow, it’s much better organized and to-the-point. http://themagicportal.us

These three resources all came from the past couple of issues. Good stuff…

STEPHEN HOBBS’ TECHNICAL TOOLBOX
Powerful & Practical Sleight of Hand with Cards

I love these resources/videos. Stephen has constructed a site that adds a new video each week. These are not your typical video tutorials, but detailed and sometimes complex sleights, controls, moves, and routines. Some Steven has never shared with the public.. until now.  To quote:

“Stephen Hobbs’ Technical Toolbox is a free web ‘zine devoted to powerful and practical sleight-of-hand with cards.  Very little of my material has seen print in any form before and I am excited to share it with other card-magic aficionados.

On a weekly basis throughout 2014 I will add new material  to this site.  The Table of Contents lays out the plan for the year and allows you to directly access previously released items..”

On a professional note:

“Stephen Hobbs is the author of several well-known books on conjuring, including: Modus Operandi: The Card Magic of Jack Carpenter (Hermetic Press), Gene Maze and the Art of Bottom Dealing (Kaufman & Greenberg), and The Essential Sol Stone (The Alexander Studio).

With Richard Kaufman and Jon Racherbaumer, Hobbs was a co-editor of the short-lived periodical The Looking Glass.  In addition, Hobbs was the sole editor and publisher of the underground magazine Labyrinth: A Journal of Close-Up Magic..”

I’m sure this will be the most shared link in this issue. You guys will thank me for this.. I, in turn, will thank Jim….

“Discover our top website strategies for magicians and how the 80/20 rule can work for you. Some (websites) look very good but a quick peek under the hood and you’ll see they are all  show and no go. Some perform very well but look dreadful, like relics from an age passed. These sites could be doing better with attention to functional and modern, relevant design. So, which is better? An ugly functional site or a pretty non-functioning site? Come on. You know the answer to that already: neither. Then where do you get the skills and knowledge and time to get your site doing what it is meant to do; that is get you bookings? This is the thrust of the episode of the Magician Business Podcast.”  Almost one hour in length… from our friends at MagicianBusiness.com

BookBub – Free and Highly Discounted eBooks for Kindle, Nook.. and more

I subscribe to BookBub. They send me one brief email each day with two or three ebooks, often bestsellers, that I can either download free or pay $1.99 – 2.99. Some of the recent titles include Freakonomics, Game of Thrones, The DaVinci Code, The Boy in the Suit Case, Grumpy Cat, The Shining, The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook.. and many others.

This is NOT a book club. There are NO obligations. You look at the email, and if you see something you want.. you buy it or download it free. In my case, I buy ebooks and they are automatically downloaded to the free Kindle app on my laptop. Fiction, non-fiction, biographies, self-help.. you name it and I’ve bought it. Now, I just have to read it…

The ‘catch’ is this.. and it actually affects the authors instead of the readers; If you allow your book to be sold on Amazon’s Kindle, Amazon has the right to temporarily discount your book at will. Since authors don’t pay to have their books uploaded to Amazon/Kindle, and then downloaded by the consumers, Amazon can pick up some quick bucks by selling best sellers at up to 90% discounts. Since the sell only last 24 hours, chances are the book’s bottom line won’t be affected.. and Amazon can pick up a quick twenty to thirty thousand.. Nice..

FactHive @FactHive

Last month I told you about HumorHive, one of my very favorite reads on Twitter. This month I’m going to introduce you to my ‘other’ favorite – FactHive. They tweet numerous little ‘facts’ throughout the day, and I have yet to find FactHive boring or invasive. Being an information freak as it is, I actually enjoy the little bits of wisdom…
Here are a few samples:

A pack-a-day smoker will lose approximately two teeth every 10 years.

Although difficult, it’s possible to start a fire by rapidly rubbing together two Cool Ranch Doritos.

On average, it takes between 12 to 14 dates before couples will trade house keys.

The dot over the letter “i” is called a tittle.

Babies are born without knee caps. They don’t appear until the child reaches 2-6 years of age.

In every episode of Seinfeld there is a Superman somewhere.

No one knows Albert Einstein’s last words, because his attendant nurse did not speak German.

By 2025, China will build 10 New York-sized cities.

Honey is the only food that will never rot. A jar of honey can remain edible for over 3,000 years. *bzzz*

The average person blinks their eyes 6.25 million times a year.

Go to FactHive, have a look around, and click to subscribe if you want.. You can read all the ‘facts’ online without subscribing if you are not a big Twitter fan…

Magic Roadshow #155

Magic Roadshow #155

MAGIC ROADSHOW #155

June, 2014

Welcome to a new Magic Roadshow. This is a very special one.. to me at least. I published the first Roadshow on June 8th, 2004.. ten years ago this week. Sooo.. this is like my 10th Anniversary.

I’ve compiled a number of features for this issue. I hope I’ve found a little something to suit every taste. Sometimes I think I try to be everything to everyone, and I know from experience that’s not possible. At any rate.. enjoy!

Those of you with an interest in mentalism and card magic are in for a special treat. You’ll know it when you see it.

Summer is here. What that means to me is that football season is around the corner. I can’t get overly excited about the NBA playoffs. Hopefully, the finals will be a hard-fought classic. I like Lebron.. and I like Duncan… so I’m uncommitted at the moment. What does this have to do with magic?  Nothing. So I’ll shut up and move along.

I’ve been super-busy since last issue. My friend, Fran Ferry, is going to attempt to teach me to play guitar. Lord help him… The Magic News site continues to garner interest from around the world. I enjoy having the freedom of posting a feature in a matter of minutes. As soon as you’re through reading this issue of the Roadshow, -run- to the Magic News site at:

http://MagicNews.org and see what’s new.

Be sure to check out my latest site, News Growth, for the very latest in world news.. Whether it’s world or national news, financial news, entertainment, or sports.. we have it all covered…. http://NewsGrowth.com

I want to remind everyone of my ‘special request’ to assist Les Khan in his effort to educate ‘mathmatically challenged’ adults. We are looking for interesting math problems to make learning enjoyable. Les has been asked to implement his training in the UK, and we are exploring the possibility of extending into other countries. If you have math problems you feel would be a good fit for folks learning the skill, email me and lets talk.  mailto:[email protected]

FOUR WAY COINCIDENCE – An Impromptu Miracle

Originated by John Murray

Made Popular by Jerry Mentzer

Composed by Paul Lelekis

Editors note: Don’t you love effects that employ the TRIFECTA of card tricks: a Borrowed, Thoroughly-Shuffled Deck, that’s (almost) Self-Working. That, my friends, is a description of the perfect effect… I was looking at a similar effect on Youtube, not nearly as impressive BTW, and when I shared it with my buddy, Paul Lelekis, he yelled “SURPRISE!.. I not only spent time with Jerry M. learning his handling, but I published this effect in one of my ebooks.. ‘EIGHT + ONE’ “. After fierce negotations well in to the night, Paul agreed to share his handling with Roadshow readers, so you guys can see the true smarts behind this effect.

I learned this effect many years ago from Jerry Mentzer, when visiting his home in Greenville,S.C. He performed this effect for me as soon as I walked in the door. I was dazzled and completely in the dark as to the method! And best of all – it is VERY EASY to do!

The late John Murray was a quiet, unassuming master of the pasteboards and this trick, in my opinion, is the very best “coincidence-type” of effect out there! Spectators love it! ENJOY!

EFFECT: A spectator shuffles the deck and the performer then removes a “prediction card”. The magician then starts dealing cards out, one at a time, until the spectator says, “Stop!”

From that point the performer then turns the top card, face up, from one of the piles, chosen by the spectator. Let’s say that this card is a 5 of Hearts, though suits do NOT matter.

The performer next spells out the word, “F-I-V-E”, turning the next card, face up to display a second five! The top card of the pile is turned up to show a third five! The prediction card is turned face up to display a fourth five!

METHOD: Your spectators will be dumb-founded when you perform this easy-to-do demonstration! Get a deck of cards in hand and follow along with the below instructions – this is very easy to do!

Stage #1:

Begin by having the spectator shuffle the deck. Take the deck back and announce, “I am NOT going to move the cards around or change anything! What I’m going to do is look for a prediction card from your shuffled deck!”

What you actually do is turn the deck, face up so that only you can see the cards. Look at the top card of the deck – let’s say, for example, that the card is a 5. (See pic 6-1)

Mentally count (starting with the five!), F-I-V-E, one card for each letter, without reversing their order. Place that group of four cards, into a disheveled pile, face down onto the table as if merely getting rid excess cards out of your hand. (See pic 6-2) This should appear very casual.

Continue going through the cards until you see the second five. When you see it, take all those cards below and including the second five, (See pic 6-3) and casually toss them on top of the cards already on top of the table. The first two fives will now be right next to each other!

Continue to quickly run through the cards (without changing their order!) until you spot the third five! Cut all the cards BELOW that five (See pic 6-4) and lay them onto the tabled cards. You will now have two of the “fives” on the table within the tabled pile, and the third “five” on top of deck!

Continue spreading the cards until you spot the fourth five and remove it (See pic 6-5) from the deck and lay the fourth five face-down onto the table on your right. (See pic 6-6) Say, “This will be my prediction card from your shuffled deck!” and lay the rest of the cards in your right hand, on top of the tabled pile (See pic-6). Do NOT let anyone see this prediction card yet!

Situation Check: The deck is, from the face of the deck, back…three indifferent cards, two “fives”, the rest of the deck and, on top, (if deck were face down), the third “five”. There will be a prediction card (the fourth “five”!), face down on the table on your right!

Pick up the deck and announce, “I will now divide the deck into two piles by counting down the cards, one at a time, until you say, ‘Stop!’

Stage #2:

As you make the above statement, turn the deck face up and start counting the cards down into another face up pile, one at a time and very quickly. (See pic 6-7)

You will say the above statement as you deal off the cards into a pile and until you pass the two “fives” which are right next to each other! You DO NOT want the spectator to say, “Stop!”, BEFORE you’ve passed the two “fives”!

Continue rapidly dealing cards, face up onto the table until the spectator says, “Stop!” The spectator will generally say, “Stop!” after you’ve dealt about 1/4 to 1/3 of the cards down.

Situation Check: When she says, “Stop!”, you will have a packet of face-up cards on the table and the remainder of the deck, face up, in your hands. Of course, the face-down “prediction card” (the fourth five) will still be face down and off to the right, on the table.

Now turn the tabled cards, face down and over to your right. Place the cards in your hands, next to the tabled pile and on your left.

Stage #3: Ask the spectator to, “Please choose either pile – it really doesn’t matter which one!” I say this statement in a casual, “matter-of-fact” manner so that an “overly exuberant” spectator won’t start trying to foul the trick up by “trying to be clever”!

A very easy “magician’s force” ensues! Below will be the only two possibilities that she has!

1) If she chooses the pile on your right (the pile first dealt down) say, “O.K. We’ll use this pile. The other pile will represent an indicator card!” Push the pile on the left to your outer left and then turn the top card, face up – it will be a FIVE! The pile on your right is held into your hands.

2) If she chooses the pile on your left, you will do EXACTLY the same thing as step 1) above except you will call the pile on your left, the “indicator pile” as opposed to the “indicator card” (as you say in step 1 above)! Then nonchalantly pick up the pile on your right without giving it any mind! See the difference? It’s the same scenario either way!

In either case above, there will be the left-hand packet pushed outward and over to your left as you turn the top card, face up, to display a “five”. The right hand packet will be in your hands.

Stage #4: “Let’s see – your indicator card is a five!” Start to deal down cards from the packet in your hands as you spell out, F-I-V-E – one card for each letter.

AS SOON AS YOU FINISH SPELLING DOWN THE WORD, “FIVE”, PLACE THE CARDS IN YOUR HANDS, DOWN ONTO THE TABLE IN FRONT OF YOU! This is very important!

Next you say, “F-I-V-E spells, what?” The spectator will say, “Five!” NOW turn up the top card of the spelled pile to reveal a FIVE! Pause! This is timed misdirection! It separates the next “five” from the one you just turned face up! It keeps the spectator from realizing that the first two “fives” were actually right next to each other! It works perfectly every time!

After a brief pause (a couple of seconds) turn the top card of the pile on the table to show a THIRD five! “And here I have a third five! AND – my prediction card from your shuffled deck has always been – a five!”

Turn up the prediction card to show a fourth five for your finale! Watch the reaction from the spectators!

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THIS EFFECT! It is very powerful!

Paul Lelekis

THE PREDICTION OF A RANDOM NUMBER

BASED UPON YOUR DATE OF BIRTH

Secretly write the number 4028 on a slip of paper. Fold it and hand to someone for safe keeping. Explain in your best Derren Brownian manner that this is a forecast of an event with a series of numbers that hasn’t yet occurred.

You now invite a spectator to write down their date of birth.

Now, have them write down a significant year in their life below this. Expound upon it. Stress the importance of this year, and tell them the success of your prediction rest entirely upon the care and thought they put into their selection.

Ask them to calculate how many years have elapsed since that significant year, based on this being 2014.

Finally have them write down the age they will be on their birthdate this year below the other numbers. If their birthdate has already passed this year, then they write down their current age. (If they write down their current age and their birthdate is still to come in 2014.. then your prediction will be off.) The best way to overcome this little twitch is.. ask them if they’ve had a birthday this year. If they say ‘yes’, then ask them to write down their age. If they say ‘no’, then ask them to write down the age they will be on their birthday.

Now get them to add up all the numbers like an addition.

EXAMPLE

Date of birth                                                   1964

Significant year                                              1981

Number of years passed since that year        33

That persons age this year                               50

Now have them add the numbers.

 1964

 1981

    33

    50

——-

4028

Have your prediction read… and of course it’s the same number, 4028, that you wrote in secret.

NOTE.  When you instruct them to calculate how many years have passed, it is taken from their significant year to 2014… In our example: 2014 – 1981 = 33

Place emphasis on the fact that you could not possibly know what year they would choose for their significant year, or the year they were born.

And one last ‘catch’.. This prediction only works for this year, 2014. When 2015 rolls around, the prediction will change to 4030.

I would like to thank David J. O’Connor for providing me with this effect…

( A similar effect is force #117 in Annemann’s  202 Methods of Forcing..)

Build Your Magic Show – Serious Training

My friend from down-under, Julian Mather, has created a course in magic like no other. Julian understands ALL the ins and outs of creating a magic show, from scratch, that will give you the ability to become a professional performer.

Teaching you tricks isn’t enough. Teaching you the secret of successful marketing isn’t enough. Teaching you precisely how to create all the props and equipment you’ll need isn’t enough.

Julian understands that building a magic show involves a large assortment of skills and techniques that can’t be taught in one book, or one DVD. That’s why he has created video after video, segment after segment, for you to watch until you know EXACTLY what to do. He’s provided links to PDF study aids to give you a different perspectice. He’s invited some of the top ‘performers’ in the world to help teach you, in their own words.

David Kay, aka “Silly Billy’, regarded as the top childrens performer on the planet devotes two hours to your training. Likewise for Michael Finney, who has forgotten more about the performing arts than most magicians learn in a lifetime. All I’ll ask you to do is visit the link below and watch over a hour of totally FREE video, offering you some new tips and explaining the super-affordable training. No obligation whatsoever… and no commitment..

David Regal, Marlo, Lorayne.. and more.

I saw David a little over a year ago. He looked the same. David always looks the same. In fact, when I saw him a couple of weeks ago on my favorite magic show, The Carbonaro Effect, he STILL looks the same. I don’t know what sort of deal he’s made with Father Time, but I’d like to get in on it…

Seeing him the other week reminded me of a feature he published on his web site.. A segment of Genii, July 1997, titled Regal Splendor. I remember the feature not only because of the informative interview, but also because of the parade of effects that followed.

First was Logical Assembly, a direct Ace assembly that occurs before the spectator realizes what’s up…

Found Money started off as an effect for a children’s show, but worked so nicely David decided instead to share it with grown-ups with an interest in magic… me and you..

Halo Again, Royally, created by Harry Lorayne, is an extension of Halo Again, which was Harry’s opener for years and years.

For Marlo, created by David, pays homage to Hamman’s Underground Transposition. A single, odd card is added to the packet and voila! .. a surprise ending.

Spot Remover is a nice two dice effect.. that uses one die. A series of paddle moves produces a very visual effect that can be performed as part of a routine or singularly.

Clicking the link opens the feature as a PDF.. but there’s nothing to download.

TED Talks About Magic – videos

TED has earned a spot both in our culture and in our craft. I ran across a page recently that provided links to 14 TED videos.. all related to magic in one form or another. You may have seen the majority of these, but if you’ve missed one or two it’ll be worth your time to visit… Included are:

– And for my next trick, a robot
– The magic of Fibonacci numbers
– A cyber-magic card trick like no other
– The levitating superconductor
– The journey across the high wire
– A magical tale (with augmented reality)
– Augmented reality, techno-magic
– The magic of truth and lies (and iPods)
– Homeopathy, quackery and fraud
– The magic of the placebo
– How I held my breath for 17 minutes
– Close-up card magic with a twist
– Brain magic
– A performance of “Mathemagic”

Plus, look for a short inclusion by David Blaine where he lists his seven favorite TED videos.. most which are not related to magic. I haven’t had time to watch any of David’s selections, but I trust there’s something interesting about each to have been picked as his favorites.

Time to Be Awesome – interviews

David Corsaro, an excellent magician and lecturer, has added a new section to his website called ‘Time to be Awesome’. He sits down with some of the greatest talent in magic and asks the questions you and I would ask if we had the opportunity. I’ve not listed all the interviews.. only the ones I’ve watched.. and that alone is a VERY impressive list…

  • John Allen
  • Woody Aragon
  • Karl Hein
  • Cody Fisher
  • Geoff Williams
  • Paul Gertner
  • Hannibal
  • Doc Dixon

The interviews tend to run anywhere from ten to thirty minutes, averaging about sixteen minutes each… short enough to hold your interest and long enough to make them well worth your time..

For those coin guys out there.. here is a nice medium difficulty level coin vanish. There is no bone twisting required.. just a little practice. Blanks –  A Card Tutorial

FernandoP1 – Art Zone Productions

Watch four Aces transform into four blank cards. The handling is very nice and visual, something I think many of you want out of a card trick. Learn the spins and you’ll have something you can’t wait to show your friends and spectators. Even if you aren’t interested in learning the effect, you should watch the first minute of this video.

You can use this as a force, or as the crux of an effect. Many of you are familiar with the slip cut and it’s possibilities. This uses a variation of the one most of you know, utilizing a cover move to conceal the slip. It looks so easy, and the tutorial takes all of two minutes to teach.

Jay Sankey’s Link’d  – tutorial

Here’s a nice little ditty that I think I may have published a link to in a past issue. Regardless, I’m not taking the time to go back several years looking for it… I’ll simply publish it again, or for the first time, depending on my luck.

This is perfect for the restaurant or coffee shop. All the necessary props, small straws, are readily available.. and the audience will help you assemble what you need. This is smart thinking, and the perfect trick for those of you tired of card magic…  😉

How Many Cards Are In A Random Stack? Now You Know – Tutorial

Cut a stack of cards from the deck and immediately know exactly how many cards you hold. Some guys are really good at estimating by touch, but you don’t have to guess any more.

This is a method that’s been around for a long time, but is seldom used. And, for those of you allergic to math, you’ll have to perform a minor calculation to determine the correct number.. but, if you’re dead set against mathematical effects, that’s perfectly OK with me. That means there’s one less guy out there performing this method.

How to Approach a Restaurant to Get Work

How to Improve Your Backroom Sales with Michael Finney

To quote MagicianBusiness…

“The best way for a magician to find out what a restaurant needs from their magic services is to ask a restaurant manager. Andrew cox has been managing restaurants, bars, hotels, pubs and clubs for over 20 years.”

“Listen to what he wants to hear from magicians when they apply for strolling work at a restaurant. Is the magic tricks he is interested in? Is it great customer service? Is it keeping guest happy with your magic and humour? What tips will help your restaurant magician salary? What tricks do you need?”

And.. Michael Finney details how to get backroom sales. You all know Michael, and his video is the Real Deal…

If you’re a fan of Twitter, this is one of my very favorite subscribes. You’ll get maybe seven to ten of these ‘one liners’ each day. Hey, you might even run across a line or two to use in your performances.

-I don’t burn bridges. I just loosen the bolts a little each day.

-I guess we’ll never find out who let the dogs out…

-Roses are red… violets are red… tulips are red… bushes are red… trees are red… oh God, my garden’s on fire!

-My girlfriend said she’s leaving because I don’t pay attention to her, or something like that.

-My superpower is being able to stop even the most basic piece of technology from working.

-Scientists say the universe is made up of Protons, Neutrons and Electrons. They forgot to mention Morons.
