Hello June !!

Right about now, a faithful Roadshow reader named June thinks I devoted this issue to her.. Summer is here, full force. But, before we get to that, I want to Welcome all the new subscribers to the Magic Roadshow. If this is your first issue, I hope you find something that makes a real difference in your magic.

Yes, summer has arrived on our side of the globe, and despite the heat, I feel sleightly invigorated, pun intended. The wife and I spent last week on the Carolina coast with friends, a well-deserved vacation of sorts, and right this moment I would love nothing more than to buy a condo at the beach and kick back.

 There are some changes in store for the Roadshow. Issues are going to become a little shorter. These long issues are killing me, time wise, as I am totally reliant on me, myself, and I for all the editing and publishing. Remembering how I used to put issues together in three or four days is disheartening now that I must start a new issue as soon as the current issue publishes. Some of you guys have mentioned that shorter issues would be easier to read, and I think I agree. Of course, I remember saying the same thing a couple of years ago and I published shorter issues for three or four months.

Finding material for publication was a real task at one time. And it seems the volumn of magic on the internet has exponentially increased the past three or four years. My ability to ‘discover’ new magic has improved many times over too. I consider myself a very good user of the search engines.. along with some of my friends like Michael Lyth. Michael and I can toss a subject out there.. and suddenly we have a wealth of information between the two of us. I want to publicly thank Michael for all the invaluable assistance, and apologize for not crediting him with some of the links I honestly can’t remember who found first…

I want to Thank Paul Lelekis, Werner Miller, and Bob Solari for their invaluable contributions also. I think every issue in 2015 has contained something from Paul, Michael, Werner and Bob. I could fairly call each one an Associate Editor of the Roadshow !

This issue is dedicated to Elliott Michael Black. He performed around the world as Michael Elliott and spent many happy years in Chicago and Asheville NC, among other places. Elliott was an electrical engineer, a lawyer, a business owner, a mentalist, and my friend. He was known as “The Sherlock Holmes of Thought” and was a long time member of the Psychic Entertainers Assoc. (PEA), and was awarded the Bob Haines Memorial Award for Distinguished Service.

I publish each issue of the Roadshow as a PDF because Elliott wanted me to.. He enjoyed printing them out and reading them at his leisure. I could never figure how he dealt with the links… Elliott passed away last month in Chicago after moving there from Asheville to be closer to his family. Trent, Gary and myself will sorely miss your presence, Friend..
I try not to get too political in the Roadshow.. this is simply not the forum. But when I read this recently I couldn’t help but republish it. There will be a LOT of this between now and election time, so keep these thoughts by TOM WOLFE close..

COMEDY SILK TO EGG CLASSIC  –  Paul Lelekis

Too many performers have passed this amazing classic routine of magic over…and it’s too bad because it is a HUGE audience-pleaser!

I have used this routine for years at all parlor, platform or cabaret performances. The spectators LOVE this effect! I first saw this trick on the Ed Sullivan show when I was a kid…and I’ll NEVER forget how amazed I was!

Below is my personal handling of this effect.

EFFECT: A black silk is stuffed into the performer’s hand. When his hand is opened, the silk has changed into a white egg! The magician shows how the trick works by showing the hole in the plastic egg and the silk is inside of it.

Then the performer produces a miniature wand (with some funny patter!) and hands it to the spectator to wave over the fake egg…but then the “hole” is peeled off and the fake egg is cracked over a glass to empty the contents of a real egg!

SET UP: You’ll need a real egg and a plastic egg (soft plastic) so that you can cut out a hole near one end of the egg. I found mine in stores like Michael’s Arts & Crafts.

You can also purchase a standard “Silk to Egg” trick at a fairly low price to obtain the plastic egg needed. You’ll also need a 12”-16” black silk. I use a black silk (though any dark silk will work fine!) because it plays beautifully to “camouflage” the fake hole on the real egg. Also, be sure to have a clear glass available to crack the egg into at the end!

To make the fake hole, I use a piece of stiff paper or thin construction paper and cut out a piece that is ovule in shape to match the size of the hole in the fake egg. I then color this piece of paper with a black Magic Marker.

Before the show, remove the egg from the ‘fridge about 2 hours before the show so that it will quit “sweating” as it approaches room temperature. Then dry the egg off and apply a small piece of double-stick tape to the oval piece of black paper (the “hole”) and stick this to the real egg at the same place where the real hole in the fake egg is. This set up is actually quite simple to do!

You’ll also need to make a miniature wand! I just buy thin wooden dowels from a home improvement store like Ace or Home Depot with a diameter of about 3-4mm or about 1/8 of an inch. Then saw off about a 4” length. Paint the ends white and the middle black! It doesn’t have to be exact. I took a couple of dowel rods and made about 20 or so wands, though you only need one wand.

Just before performance place the real egg (with black paper stuck to it) and the fake egg in your left coat pocket and the wand in your left, inside coat pocket. You should have the black silk protruding from your jacket breast pocket. Place your mini-wand in your inside left jacket pocket and you’re set to go!

METHOD: As you start your presentation, secretly go into your left pocket with your left hand and “steal” the fake egg into your left hand as you display the black silk. Talk about showing the audience an actual classic of magic – and then tell them that you “…will go against the magician’s code and show you exactly HOW the trick works…IF you applaud me loudly enough!”

Start applauding when you say the above line of patter and the audience will join in and applaud also. Then say…“Not NOW! I meant after I show you the trick!” This gets a good laugh. This patter will loosen everyone up and put YOU in charge!

Turn to your right and begin stuffing the silk into your closed left fist – actually into the hidden plastic egg!
The patter at this point is mainly innocuous. As you continue to stuff the silk into your left hand, slowly move your hands up and down as you continue stuffing the silk all the way in. Be overly dramatic when you do this!
After the silk has been pushed in, make some kind of magic gesture and reach into your left hand with your right fingers and remove the white egg!

You will be surprised how many spectators will “ooh and ahh” when they see the egg! A white egg always elicits a big response – try an egg bag routine out and see!

Some people may soon figure out that it’s a hollow egg…but before they start guessing, say, “Look! It’s just a hollow egg! See? I just stuffed the black hanky into the hollow egg!”  (Notice that I said “hanky” and not “silk”! People don’t generally know what a silk is!)

Address the audience and say, “Now THIS is the part where you supposed to applaud!” Everyone will applaud loudly! Coax them on by applauding yourself and say, “Come on…I want to hear some yelling!” They will yell and laugh!

This is where you loosen everyone up and it puts the spectators on your side, so to speak! You’re obviously going for cheap applause but it makes everyone laugh!

Keep the fake egg out where in your left hand where everyone can see it and the black silk inside the egg. Announce how you ‘…hid the fake egg in my hand and I merely stuffed the hanky into it!’ Mime the actions as you say this line.

“O.K., I need someone from the audience to help me out with this next part!” Here try to get an elderly woman or a young girl or boy to help you out. Call her up and get the audience to applaud her. As she approaches, place the fake egg into your right hand so that it sits deep into it. Announce that you have something for her to use, to do the magic! Here is where you will perform Juan Tamiriz’s, Crossing the Gaze move!

CROSSING THE GAZE
Reach into your left coat pocket as if retrieving the wand, but the expression on your face indicates that it’s not there! Then look directly at the audience!

Secretly grasp the real egg from that pocket into your left hand (held deep in your left palm!) as your face changes to a look that the “something” is not there! Look to your left pocket and then immediately look over to your right pocket!  As soon as you look to the right, your right hand (with the fake egg) goes to your left, at the same time that your left hand comes out of your left coat pocket. Immediately pretend to put the fake egg that’s in your RH, into your LH! You actually do nothing…it’s a shuttle pass – don’t be afraid of this…it works EVERY time!

Your right hand next “darts” quickly into your inside left coat pocket with the fake egg. Leave the fake egg in that pocket as you bring out the mini-wand! Because of the shuttle pass, everyone will think that the egg in your left hand (the real egg!) is still the plastic egg with the silk stuffed in it! This switch works beautifully!

The Finale:
Hand the mini-wand to the spectator and say, “Be careful…this wand may be small but it’s very powerful! You know what they say, ‘…it’s not the size of the wand that counts…it’s how you use it!’ Isn’t that right sir?!” Here is where you point to some man in the audience… and then watch the laughter!

I’ve used the above line hundreds of times! Everyone laughs out loud! It really lightens the room!

Have your helper wave her magic wand over the egg (everyone still thinks it’s the fake egg!) and say, “Look! You did it!”

Now hold the real egg up where everyone can see the “fake hole” in the real egg. Trust me…even up close, the black paper hole looks like the real thing! Then peel the black paper off!

“Milk” this moment! Everyone will be shocked that you peeled away the hole with the silk in it!
Now go over to the glass and very deliberately break the egg into the glass! You are clean! DO NOT underestimate this classic! It is a powerhouse routine!

EZ TO DO CARD MIRACLES  –  A Review of Paul Lelekis’ (Second) Latest eBook

When I found out Paul had a new ebook on Lybrary I couldn’t wait to read it. Paul Lelekis, as many of you know, is one of the very best card technicians on the planet and a True Friend of both the Roadshow and yours truly.  Aside from being so skillful, Paul is both an excellent writer and shares invaluable advice based on years of real-world experiences. ( Aside from the many lectures and walk-arounds, Paul has spent literally thousands of nights as a restaurant performer..)

This latest, EZ To Do Card Miracles, is right up my alley.. Anything magical that’s also easy was written specifically with me in mind. In all fairness, not every effect is what I term ‘easy’. ‘Ghost Collectors’ and ‘You Must Be Lucky’ require a couple of manipulations that are easily within the scope of the average reader.

The other four effects are darn close to self-working.  In fact, ‘Make the Cards Match’ and ‘Translation’ are both of the Martin Garner variety that, when performed step by step, will work correctly even though we know not what we do.. Don’t you love it when the magician is as impressed as his audience!

Simon Aronson’s ‘Shuffle bored’ is the last of the six effects. This version is based on Simon’s 1980 version, with personal aspects added by Paul, along with explanations. This is one of my all-time favorite effects, on any level. The fact that it’s self-working is an added bonus.

Paul begins this ebook with a treatise on performing effects for folks, particularly in a restaurant setting, that is alone worth the price of the ebook. He is absolutely right on with his observations, and I will always remember Paul telling of how his tips went up exponentially as he began to ‘show off’ less and ‘show less’. Suddenly, his magic began to appear effortless and his audiences were more impressed by what they didn’t see than by what they did. Priceless.

Buy the ebook. Enjoy the effects. And you’ll be a fan.
POWERHOUSE ROUTINES  –  Paul’s Real Latest eBook

I try to keep up with every ebook Paul publishes, and lately he’s made it difficult. Not only does he wirte with style and swagger, but he writes faster than I can read! Jeez, it seems I just enjoyed his last ebook, EZ TO DO CARD MIRACLES, and now.. POWERHOUSE ROUTINES. Paul is an expert at both creating world class routines and sleights, and taking routines initiated by others to entirely new heights. PowerHouse Routines contains both.

‘Telekinetic Four Ace Reverse’ and ‘Find Your Own Card’ are Marlo ideas transformed to a hyper degree by Paul. Aside from the basic premise, everything about the handling is completely new to me. ‘Gravity’ and ‘Lelekis’Touch Switch’ are uniquely Paul. I particularly like the Touch Switch and can think of a half dozen effects I use regularly that will definitely benefit from this utility.

Last but certainly not least.. Paul has composed an intro worthy of the price of the ebook. The advice is sure and true. There are tips and advice here that will improve your performance regardless of your skill level. I read it, read all the effects.. and went back and re-read the intro. The handling tips are important.. but the performing advice is invaluable.

These are worker effects you will add to your repertoire immediately. These are effects that will make you impatient, hardly able to contain yourself until your next magic meeting. If you aren’t familiar with the library of work of Paul Lelekis, this is a great place to start.

Voyeur  –  A Card Gimmick

Bob Solari’s VOYEUR works like this…

You remove a deck from the case. Spread the deck face down on a table and ask the spectator to select a card. Once done, ask the spectator to place the card in the card case. Without any unusual moves or gestures, you can now pick up the card case, shake it gently, and immediately know the identity of the card inside. You can also show the card case from all sides…

First, gently shaking the card case has nothing to do with your reveal. Second, the card case itself does all the work.  As with most of Bob’s gimmicks and utilities, a great deal of delicate work goes into each one. Bob himself often creates these gimmicks one at a time, by hand, to assure each works with precision and professionalism.
Please don’t assume, as Bob puts it, that VOYEUR is simply “a hole in a box”..

These cases are made out of the standard Bicycle cases. Mine is blue and I’m assuming they also come in red, but don’t hold me to it.

When I first opened mine, I couldn’t wait to ‘discover’ the secret myself. So, rather than read the instructions, I opened the box, inspected the flaps inside and out, and slowly turned the box end over end looking for the tell-tale sign of a doctored case. I couldn’t see it.  I didn’t realize the way I was holding the box, the way almost anyone would hold the box, prevented me from ‘seeing’ the secret. Talking with my friend, Paul Lelekis, I found he experienced the same bafflement as I.. He too inspected the box top to bottom and couldn’t find the ‘secret’. We are two grizzly ‘ol performers, and I promise, if we can’t see it, your audience certainly won’t see it !

There are a couple of different effects provided with the gimmick. I immediate thought of a half dozen other possible uses. One of Bob’s suggestions has the spectator select a card as above, except the magician can put all the remaining cards in the case, and the spectator can then stick his card in the case at any location.. and the magician will still reveal the selected card.

This is one of those things that has many different uses, and not all are card related. Any object that can be placed inside a card box can be discovered, including various coins.

If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, this is it.  Add a new level of effects to your performance. If this gimmick doesn’t get the creative juices flowing, may I suggest knitting ?

TRICKS WITHOUT NAMES –  Another Mathemagical Medley of Semi-Automatic Tricks  –   Werner Miller

Trick #6

Secretly have the AS on top of your deck and the backs of the bottom nine cards lettered as
shown (Fig. 1).

To perform, force the AS to a spectator without disturbing the bottom stock of the deck or flashing the lettered backs. The Goldin Force, e.g., fills the bill nicely: While you are holding the deck in your left hand, your left thumb riffles down its outer left corner until the spectator calls stop.

Open a break between the riffled and unriffled cards, release the riffled portion and let it roll over and off the left fingertips so that it lands on the fingers of the palm-up right hand. By closing the right fingers, cause the riffled packet to turn over and end up face down in dealing position, then lower the hand and, with your thumb, push the top card to the left and place it before the spectator, still face down.

 

Announce that the deck itself will reveal the name of the spectator’s card. Turn the deck over, and deal the bottom nine cards face up into three piles, singly and rotationally, from left to right. Discard the remainder of the deck.

Flip the third pile onto the second one, then the combined second pile onto the first pile (as in Trick #3). Spread the cards: The top three cards are face down and their backs are displaying a word, the value of a card (Fig. 2). Read it out aloud (“Ace…”), close the spread (“… of …”), turn
the cards over and spread them again: Now the top six cards are face down, and their backs are displaying another word, a suit (Fig. 3) – “… Spades! Obviously, your card is the Ace of Clubs.”

Ask the spectator to confirm this by turning over the selection.

Variations: Force the JD. Have the bottom twelve cards lettered D-J-O-I-A-N-A-C-D-M-K-S, and deal them similarly into three piles. Or: Force the KC. Have the bottom nine cards lettered C-K-BI-L-N-S-G-U, and deal them “zig/zag” style into three piles (Fig. 4a). Or: Force the QH. Have the
bottom eleven cards lettered H-Q-R-U-E-E-T-E-A-N-S, and deal them “zig/zag” style into three piles (Fig. 4b). Or: Force the 7C. Have the bottom ten cards lettered C-S-U-E-B-E-L-V-S-N, and deal them “zig/zag” style into four piles (Fig. 4c).  (To Be Continued.)

A Thorough Review of 20 Magic Apps for Your Phone

You would think that magic, as a hobby and a profession, would have gone the way of the typewriter by now. After all, there’s no video scene you can’t create digitally these days, and audiences know perfectly well that any prop you can dream up can be manufactured.

Yet magic is alive and well. Magicians on YouTube rack up millions of views. Magic shows in Vegas regularly sell out. And every birthday, thousands of elementary-school boys (yes, usually boys) joyously open up magic kits, smitten with the idea of fooling the grownups. I was one of them. I performed magic shows at about 400 birthday parties during my teenage years — and went on to write “Magic for Dummies.”

It’s no surprise, then, that smartphones should become the latest frontier for illusions. App stores offer long lists of magic-trick apps. Sometimes, the trick happens on the phone’s screen — the app does the magic. Sometimes, the phone is part of the secret — the audience doesn’t even know that it’s involved in helping you perform.

Some tricks are free or cheap little throwaways — the equivalent of the fun, self-working, plastic beginner tricks that you get in magic kits. Others are unbelievably powerful effects designed for professional magicians, costing $50 or even $100, good enough to perform at corporate parties or on TV.

Materials on Science, Magic and Mathematics

This link is the beginning of hours of interesting research. I’m not sure I can find an actual ‘home page’, as many categories at the Library of Congress cross and interact, making the ‘beginning’ nearly impossible to find. If you go to the HOME link, you’ll find the Harry Houdini link which is a gateway to a mere 4000 books belonging to the personal library of the famous conjuror donated to the Library.

From here, you can find page after page of mystery and magic… each leading to other books and collections. Many works can be viewed in PDF form or ‘ordered’ from the Library for research purposes.
The Library contains much more than books. You can view old posters, letterheads, letters, and pictures.. anything related to history.

DON’T go to this site unless you’re prepared to lose track of time. I’ve been in one tornado in my life. As my loved ones sat in a small closet, I stood in the closet doorway, unable to take my eyes away from the picture window in the living room. The driving rain was literally at a complete 90 degree angle to the ground. I was so captivated by what was transpiring outside I was more afraid to look away than I was of the tornado. That’s very similar to what happens to visitors to the Library of Congress. They are afraid to turn away. Even the knowledge they must climb out of bed in progressively fewer hours can’t make them put away the mouse and give in to the sandman.. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

DIY  –  Cards in a Bottle

How do you put a deck of cards in a bottle? (and I’m not talking a miniature deck).. Or maybe you’re curious about how they put a Rubik’s Cube in a bottle.. Probably the easiest of the three is how to put a tennis ball inside a bottle… a fully inflated tennis ball no less.

Tom Mullica – The Greater Magic   (Parts 1 and 2)

The amazing Tom Mullica has entertained the world with his unique brand of magic since about 1970. Born in Waupun, Wisconsin in 1948, Tom knew by the age of five he wanted to be an entertainer, but he believed his success would come as a clown. By the age of 21 he was working in Colon, Michigan, building magic props and illusions and demonstrating magic tricks for Abbott’s Magic Co.

Eventually, Tom moved to Atlanta and opened a nightclub which also functioned as a magic club. Open for eleven years, perhaps the single most important moment was when Red Skelton visited and he and Tom quickly became friends..

Following Red’s advice, Tom modified his act to accompany with music, allowing him to perform for anyone, anywhere. Tom eventually worked in the Crazy Horse Saloon in Paris, appeared on David Letterman, World’s Greatest Magic, Penn & Teller’s Sin City, and Viva Variety.

Pop Haydn at the Magic Castle  –  30 minutes of Pure Magic

Notorious Crooks: Who Was Erdnase? ( One of many stories you missed if not reading Magic News..)

Born in Connecticut in 1872, Andrews picked up an early interest in magic and card manipulation and became a professional gambler at 18. By 1900, he was one of the best card sharks in the country.

In 1902 a man calling himself S.W. Erdnase self-published “The Expert at the Card Table.” This 143-page book explained and demonstrated the “shuffles,” “shifts,” and sleight-of-hand techniques used by card sharks and magicians. The first edition sold poorly, and the author reduced the price to $1 per copy.

By 1903, Andrews was at the peak of his career, claiming an annual income of more than $20,000 (worth $600,000 today). But life as a hustler had taken its toll. He had developed serious digestive problems and a raging temper.

He took up with Bessie Boutin, a prostitute with a taste for luxury. They fought frequently over her drinking and his jealousy. In October 1904, Boutin disappeared in Denver, and Andrews left town with her jewelry. When her body was discovered, he was the main suspect in her death. Gary Halbert Copyrighting

Who the heck is (was) Gary Halbert? Gary left us a few years ago.. passed in his sleep, and in so doing created the most massive of holes in internet marketing. He was one of the true pioneers of using the internet as a tool to make money. Not just money.. but LOTS of money. I’m not promoting a ‘get ri ch quick’ scheme. What Gary did was taught a generation of marketers how to sell, how to market, how to attract customers, how to copyright, and how to make your website a better place through quality ad copy.

Gary published a monthly newsletter.. and charged out the wahzoo if you wanted to read it – And thousands of folks did.. at $95.00 per month. Some believed this to be highway robbery.. and others swore that, for the inside information they received, it was worth every penny.. and then some.

Being sort of an eccentric genius, Gary wrote amazing adcopy, but was lousy at organizing his newsletters and website. Now, thanks to fans and family, his newsletters have been organized, dated, and pdf’d into one gigantic file, about 1100+ pages.

“If you want to write high-converting ad copy then you simply need to study Gary Halbert – he was one of the greatest copywriters who ever lived. The thing is, his website TheGaryHalbertLetter.com is terribly organized. The content is amazing but all the newsletters are completely out of order. You’ll be reading one where he refers to the last newsletter and you’ll be like.. I haven’t read that one yet. So I did my best to organize it a bit. I did this for myself but then realized it would benefit everybody, so I’m posting the links here.”

For the most part, everything is pretty organized from 1986 (the year the newsletter started) to the 2000’s. All the misc. stuff at the bottom was taken directly off the website, but since there are no dates posted, is impossible to organize.

This past week has been quite a week. My wife, Carolyn, had a run-in with our first tropical storm, Ana, and found out first hand what it’s like to get caught on the ocean during a storm. After leaving Nassau on a Carnival cruise, the ship had to find a place to drop anchor for a day to avoid the worst of the storm. Then, like a little rabbit on the run, the ship had to bob and weave through the Atlantic, avoiding the squalls and wind, to get to the Charleston harbor. I found a website that displays the location of virtually any large or semi-large ship in the Atlantic, usually within a thirty minute time frame, and I was able to watch her ship in almost real time. Aside from my personal involvement, I could monitor the ship and the weather maps, almost reading the mind of the Captain as he made crucial decisions. It was quite an experience, more so for Carolyn I’m sure!  I’ll give credit to Verizon Wireless.. even in the middle of the Atlantic, I could get through to her cell phone, even when none of her friends had service. I’m so glad to have her back… and I’m so dreading next month’s cell bill.. (..but it was worth it..)

Caucasian Box  –   A Magical Utility

During the Abbott’s conventions of the past, Neil Foster was a good friend and always a consummate performer. During one demonstration of his skills, while hosting the magic competitions, he showed us a surprising ending for a card manipulation routine that I believe was only performed for magicians. I only saw him do it once, but it has stuck with me for years. I eventually made up a version of my own and have used it many times for laymen. The effect is a very magical.

The prop is easily made and what is traditionally known as a ‘jap box’. Of course, I would prefer to call it “Hobson’s Caucasian Box” just to be fair! I made mine from the stiff cardboard that make up common school binders. The box has no top or bottom. The dimensions of my box are approximately 12” wide, 8” high and 7” deep when in open position. The narrow sides I made are split into two sections. (photo B1)

Although not necessary, this makes it a nice, small package when collapsed for traveling. The secret back flap is nothing special but merely an extra piece of board cut to the same size as the front panel of the box. Attach this secret panel to the front panel by the bottom edge only. (photo B2 and B3) All edges and seams are fastened together with black, reinforced ‘duct’ or carpet tape available from most hardware stores. You might have to trim the edges after assembling to make it work smoothly. The box should easily collapse flat.

To prepare, place the open box on a table and open the secret flap so the box is rigid. In my routine, I place the front corner of the box so it extends off the edge of the table by an inch or so. This is so I can pick up the box one-handed during the routine.

To perform, do some card manipulations and prepare to produce some back-palmed cards. Pick up the box in your free hand. Grab the box carefully at the bottom corner so that the box does not collapse. (photo B4)

Drop the cards into the box. They should all drop into the secret flap. After the last card is in the box, use your fingers to shut the secret flap trying not to make a noticeable movement of the box. Show the free hand empty and dramatically lower the hand into the box. (photo B5) Don’t stop! Keep going down and through the bottom of the box. (photo B6) Look at the audience. They should have a question mark above their heads.

At this point, you should have your arm through the bottom of the box to the elbow. You still have a grip on the box with the other hand too. Now lift your arm (the one through the box) to the audience. (photo B7)

Pause to allow the effect to register.

Now re-grip the box to able to pinch the top edge of the box and the secret flap together. Remove the box from your arm keeping the opening to the audience so they can see clear through it. (photo B8) Now you can flip the box so it becomes flat, place it away and accept your applause. (photos B9 – B12)

I have also performed this as a climax to the 6-card repeat effect. Not a bad idea though I say so myself!

B-FLY    –   A  Super Packet Effect

There are a number of effects out there that are similar to this one, especially The Biddle Trick, but this one only uses a 10 card packet.  In addition, I’ve included a ploy of NOT looking at the cards when counting.
EFFECT: Ten cards are counted off by a spectator.  The performer first shows 5 of these cards to the spectator.  Then the other 5 cards are displayed,  without the performer looking!

The magician asks which pile the selection is in and then makes the selection invisibly jump from that packet to the other!

METHOD: This is a simple trick, but like most tricks employing the Biddle Steal, it is amazes the lay audience!

Begin by having a spectator shuffle and count off ten cards from the top of the deck.  Then have the spectator choose any of the ten cards.

Take the selection (say, it’s the 7 of Diamonds or 7D) and TILT it into the packet under the top two cards, making the 7D, third from the top.

Now overhand shuffle the packet, being certain to run the first three cards, one at a time.  The 7D is now third from the bottom.

‘I am NOT going to look at any of these cards.  I am going to show you these cards, one at a time, as I count them into TWO five card piles.  When you see your selection among these ten cards, merely note which pile it is in and, afterward, I’ll ask you which pile.’

Here’s how you proceed: After stating the patter above, turn your head and then turn the ten card packet, face up.  Hold the packet in Biddle grip with your RH (if you’re right-handed!) and then thumb off the cards, one at a time, with your left thumb.

Count the first five cards out loud, Biddle Stealing the third card, which is the selection (7D!) back beneath the RH packet.  Continue counting until you reach the count of ‘Five!’  The count should be smooth and without pause.  The 7D will remain hidden, now on the bottom of the RH packet!

Place the four, supposedly five, cards face down onto the table.  Keep your head turned to the side so that you cannot see the selection!

Reverse count the next five cards (with head still turned!) placing the last card, a double, on top.  The 7D will now be second from the face of this face up packet.

Turn this six card packet (supposedly five), face down, onto the table and to the right of the first packet.
Now ask:  ‘Which packet is your card in?’  She will indicate the first packet.

Pick up that packet and false count this four card packet as five as follows:  Hold the packet face down in the RH in Biddle position as you thumb off the first card with your left thumb.  Count off the second card in the same way but obtain a left pinkie break beneath this card. As you count off the third card, steal the ‘broken’ second card back under the RH packet at the count of ‘Three!’  Then count four and five. You may opt to perform this count in Elmsley Count grip.  The mechanics are the same but requires a little bit of practice.

Next, twist the packet and reach into the middle of the cards and pretend to remove an invisible card – supposedly the selection – with an audible ‘Snap!’  This snap is created by pressing up on the packet with the tip of your left index finger as you ‘remove’ the invisible card.  Hand the invisible card to the spectator.  This will get giggles!  Place the packet back down onto the table.   This ‘Snap!’ is something I learned from Paul Cummins years ago at a lecture.  It adds another dimension!

Next pick up the other packet (6 Cards!), still face down in Biddle grip, and reverse count five cards.  Again, the fifth card is a double.  The 7D is now on top of the face down packet. Ask the spectator to place her “invisible” card on top of the packet.  Twist the packet again (or use any other magical gesture) and then say, “There!  You can’t see it but your selection has just reappeared back on top of the packet!  Look – I now have six cards!”

Spread the cards from left to right without reversing their order.  Keep the 7D on top, displaying six cards!  This is the first revelation. Place this spread packet onto the table.  Now pick up the first packet, and show that it contains only four cards!  Place it back down. Ask for the name of the card and turn over the top card of packet number two to show that the 7D has traveled from the first packet to the second!

An Effect from Justin Willman … And a Word ..

I saw Justin Willman on Conan a couple of weeks ago. I always enjoy watching Justin on TV as he performs magic that really impresses the audience, yet is not very difficult. (My one problem with magicians performing on TV.. they seldom credit properly. More on that later…)

Justin began the effect with a card pre-signed with his own signature, face DOWN on top of the deck, and unknown and unseen to Conan or the audience. Justin performs a double turnover and asks Conan to sign the face of the supposed ‘top’ card. Once done, Justin turns both cards as one back to their original position. Conan and the audience believe the top card to be Conan’s card. Justin takes the top card, folds it twice (into fourths), and asks Conan to place it in his lips. He does…

Justin now performs another double turnover of the top two cards. The second card is a duplicate of the card folded and secretly signed before the effect began. Justin signs this card, relative to the position he signed the first card, and turns both cards back as one. Conan’s card is now back on top and the card just signed by Justin is the second card down. The audience believes the top card to be Justin’s card.

Justin takes the top card, the one with Conan’s signature, folds it into fourths, and places it in his own lips. After comedic relief.. Justin insist he and Conan ‘touch’ their two cards together to invoke the magic. They do, to the amusement of the audience, and Conan unfolds his card.. to reveal his card now has Justin’s signature.. and Justin opens his card to reveal it contains Conan’s signature.

In the original version, the spectator is given the card to hold under palm on the table. Putting the card in the lips is probably OK –if- both parties are aware of what’s about to happen. I’m sure Conan was informed beforehand and agreed to the routine… Strangers are not apt to want to get THAT close to an unknown magician. Family maybe, Friends maybe, but not strangers.

As for crediting.. Wayne Houchin taught this effect as ‘French Kiss’ on ART OF MAGIC in 2009. He also included this effect on INDECENT in 2006. Wayne ended French Kiss with the card either in the mouth or lips.

As it goes, the transpo and basic handling for this effect was created in the 1980’s by our friend Paul Lelekis. Paul performed it for many customers while table-hopping, before publishing it in the Linking Ring in July 2005. Paul titled the effect ‘Signed Two-Card Transpo’, and published it in Tony Econ’s column, ‘Card Corner’. Paul also published it in his second ebook ever.. EIGHT + ONE. (Available athttp://lybrary.com/ )
The only difference between Wayne’s version and Paul’s creation was the ending position of the signed cards.

Let this be a lesson to those of you sitting on pet effects.. If you DON’T allow them to be published in publications like The Linking Ring or the Magic Roadshow, or if you don’t compile your works in book or ebook form, you are in danger of losing ownership.

The Magic Roadshow, for example, is copyrighted. Anything appearing here, or in most other magic publications, can be verified as having been submitted by you, on a certain date, and you have established ownership. In the Roadshow’s case, the author’s also retain all rights to their effects. So, a word of advice.. Do as Paul Lelekis and others do and share your work with others. If you think seeing someone perform one of your ‘pet’ effects is troubling, wait until you see a stranger establishing ‘ownership’ of your ‘pet’ effect, and you lose the right forever to call it your own.

Enigma Card  –  A Creation by Bob Solari

Imagine you’re in a restaurant, standing at a corner table, holding two indifferent cards in a small fan. Imagine you’re pattering about the problems we magicians encounter entertaining a small table with a deck of cards. After all, what’s magical about a deck of small pieces of cardboard, printed with thirteen different values? We can muse about theories. We can inject well-known facts, or fables. We can patter about the four suits and how they represent the four seasons, We can remind our audience that each season has thirteen weeks.. thus the thirteen values. If that doesn’t impress our audience, we can remind them that the sum of the numbers one through thirteen is ninety-one (91)… and what is 91? The number of days in a season. Inevitably, someone will remind you that 91 times 4 is 364. In your best wizardly way, you can mention that the Joker was added to the deck to cover that one odd digit… and the second Joker was added to allow for leap years…

In the meanwhile, you continue to show these fortunate few a Three of Hearts and a Seven of Clubs. As entertained as they may be pondering your little discourse on a deck of cards, they are about to be floored.
The guy sitting directly across from you with the Dali mustache and a tropical shirt unbuttoned one button too far gives you a stink-eyed look and ask..”Whatcha holding them two cards for..?”
“These two?.. I thought you’d never ask”

In a moment of transformation, you push on your two card fan, just enough to push the Seven behind the Three, and in a micro-second the Seven has changed into the Queen of Diamonds. Just as it occurs to Dali guy to ask to see the back of the two cards.. you do. Front and back. A Three and a Queen. There is nary a Seven. You can hand out the Queen for examination. You can tip your head to your small audience and let them be…  At this point.. nothing else matters, as your audience has witnessed a small packet miracle and they are left to consider what manner of magic bedecked their meal..

Personally, I use Enigma Card as a reveal utility. That’s one of the many possibilities, aside from being a stand-alone effect. I’m sure those of you accustomed to devising your own routines will have no trouble finding a half dozen uses for EC.

First, let me tell you what Enigma Card isn’t.. It isn’t sleight of hand, elastic cards, sticky cards, or specially printed cards. It’s purely mechanical, which makes it virtually self-working. No, it’s not motor driven, it’s mechanical in the sense there are ‘parts’ which interact to promote the conceal.. but it relies on good ‘ol finger power to seal the deal.

Bob has created a very limited run of the Enigma Card, 350 to be exact, and I own number 294 if that gives you any indication of the number remaining. Bob has also put a video on his site showing the Enigma Card in use. I would love to see him complete sell out. CHILDREN’S MAGIC SHOWS

In recent years when the birthday party magician arrives at the door, he is shown directly into the room where the children are waiting. Then the parent leaves the performer to his own devices, to join the other parents for tea etc. In earlier times the parents would be with the children for the show which was much more appropriate.  This immediately becomes a dilemma for the performer who is then expected to not only entertain the children but to act as custodian and in some cases disciplinarian.

In this day and age it is preferable and necessary to have parents present during the show, obviously for security reasons and for the parent to maintain order with their children. I don’t believe that a magician can perform well and control a bunch of unruly kids at the same time, so make sure there is at least one adult present in the room.  I have had experiences where the parents were otherwise occupied instead of being with their children, so made sure there was plenty of clapping, laughter and noise from the children to give the impression that, ‘Hey the kids are having fun’.  However it should be mandatory to have at least one parent present.

Provided you have a structured show and you are competent, it is relatively easy to control and entertain at the same time. Just be aware of how far you can allow kids participation to go. This comes with experience; however I have found that children are not as well behaved these days as they were some years ago. The relevance of A D H D is far more common these days too that can lead to over excitement or extrovert behavior in some children. I don’t allow kids to handle any of my props unless they are failsafe ones.

Having children all shout the magic word or other participation remarks adds to the fun element of your show, just as clapping does.  So include plenty of sight gags and funny patter. Early on in your show it is sometimes easy to spot a youngster who may give you trouble later, so be aware not to involve them.  Sometimes a child will grab at a prop and I have even had them run away with it. In this case use a little tact by coercing them back with a small reward or ask them to be your assistant, or to hold a specific item. Instead of a reprimand make them a part of your show where possible, even allowing them to choose a friend and have them bring that person on stage.  Giving the naughty child a role or specific duty helps.  Never chastise a child either or you might have an irate parent to contend with. There are polite ways of maintaining control.

I once saw a magician who when the children become unruly and over boisterous, he walked forward and gently stepped on their toes without noticing he did!  While I have never tried this, It really worked for him on naughty children.  If a situation becomes truly difficult to handle, stop performing immediately and say nothing. Waiting silently will soon register and the audience will soon quieten down for you to continue.

Another problem is when there are adults present, many tend to chat among themselves (particularly men folk) and again, I stop till they have quieted.  It may even occur that the parents will gather at the back of the venue to drink that can become a real distraction, so again I would stop and patiently wait till they stopped talking and drinking. Most times words to them are un-necessary.

Some performers draw an imaginary line or place a ribbon on the floor with instructions not to cross that line during the show unless invited to by the magician.  Fortunately, as a children’s entertainer you will have the best intentions of doing a good, enjoyable show, so keep the kids on your side.

Never confront or ridicule a child who is misbehaving, as stern words never help and if a parent is present will not endear you to them either. Always be in control and remain friendly.

If you have a sound system then use it, even in a home situation. Being heard properly gives you even more control especially over children. Remember the deaf person in the back row must be able to hear you.
Above all be a happy performer and be friendly towards the young audience after all entertainment is the name of the game. I also strongly endorse Donovan Powell’s fine article on Children’s magic last month. ‘Love Children’.

THE BEAD POODLE  –  A Nice Give-Away

The little bead poodle dogs made from Christmas strings of coloured beads have become a great little give away for strolling and restaurant magicians around the world. These strings of beads are primarily used to drape and decorate Christmas trees and appear in stores like K-Mart & dollar stores when Christmas decorations begin to appear on their shelves. Get in early to stock up, as they soon disappear till the following year. They sell for around $3 to $4 a pack.

To make your bead poodle dog it takes a string of 16 beads and the twisting to form the dog is based upon the same handling used to make the basic balloon dog model made by balloon artists.

Hold the 16 string between the fingers and thumbs of both hands then release the right hand side.
The first 4 beads at the other end are then twisted together to form the head. The next bead, 5 becomes the neck.  Beads 6 -7 – 8 – 9 are laid together side by side then twisted together to form the front legs. Bead 10 becomes the dog’s body. Take beads 11-12-13-14 and lay them side by side twist together to form the back legs. Beads 15 and 16 become the tail.

It usually takes 2 twists at each joint to form the poodle.  More twists may cause the strings to break.
Having performed a little close up magic especially where you have used a volunteer, make them a bead poodle as a memento to take home. Little girls love them, as do the ladies and you will receive many oohs and aahs, and they will remember you. I always leave a bead poodle at any restaurant or coffee shop I frequent too and the waitress will always remember this little gesture. Kids will love you when they get one.
While making the bead poodle I usually say, “This little dog you don’t have to feed, don’t have to take him to the vet, never have to take him for a walk and the best thing of all, is you don’t have to scoop poop”.

TRICKS WITHOUT NAMES –  Another Mathemagical Medley of Semi-Automatic Tricks  –   Werner Miller

Trick #5

Have the deck secretly stacked as shown in Fig. 1.

When performing, false cut/shuffle the deck, then deal the top six cards singly and alternately into two piles, place the left-hand pile on top of the right-hand pile and square. Remove the top card of the combined packet, table it unviewed, take away the top card of the deck and place it – also unviewed – on your packet so that there are still six cards.

Deal the cards of your packet back and forth again, put the left-hand pile on top of the right-hand-pile, and square. Place the top card of the combined packet on the table as you did before.. it goes to the right of the first tabled card and top up the packet by placing on the next card from the deck. Continue this way until you have a row of six tabled cards and you are still holding a 6-card packet. Deal the cards of your packet straight into another row just below the first one, from left to right, and discard the rest of the deck. Turn the tabled cards face up: Each row contains only cards of the same suit, and the values in each row are Ace to Six in numerical order. (Fig. 2)

 Assemble the cards of each row separately from left to right (A on 2, both on 3, etc.), then place one 6-card packet on the other, and turn the combined packet face down.

Ask the spectator to give the cards a few complete cuts, and finally to remove the top card as his/her selection.

Pick up the remainder of the packet, and mix these eleven cards by executing a Monge Shuffle (Fig. 3):

Hold the packet face down in the left hand and use the thumb to push off the top card into the right. Now, with the left thumb, push off the next card so that it goes on top of the first one. The left thumb then pushes off a third card, but this is taken on the bottom of the right’s packet. The fourth goes to the top, the fifth to the bottom and so on, alternately placing the left hand’s cards above and below the right’s. The value-matching card of the spectator?s selection ends up third from the top down.

Ask the spectator to tell you the name of the selection, but stress that the spectator is free to lie; he/she can name any Spade or Heart, even one of the missing values Seven to King. No matter what answer you get, spell the full name of this card the same way as in Trick #1, i.e., for each letter deal out a single card into a new pile, and after each word place all the remaining cards together on top of the dealt cards.
Turn over the final top card ? it tells you the whole story: the actual name of the chosen card (its value matches automatically the spectator?s selection, but the card is of the other suit) and whether the spectator lied or answered truthfully.

Note. The first phase of this routine can be used to produce suit-matching pairs as well. Let?s assume you need the four Aces and the four Kings, both in the same suit order. In this case start with the cards stacked as shown in Fig. 4, deal the top four cards back and forth, place the left pair on the right pair, replace the top card with the deck?s top card, etc.

Dual Magic Squares Effect..

If you like magic squares as much as I, you’ll be entranced by Dual Magic Squares. Although not original to Mark Farrar, he does a fine job of explaining the effect and demonstrating the method. This is NOT about two magic squares. It’s about one magic square that, when turned UPSIDE DOWN, continues to read the same number in every direction as when it’s right-side up.

“The inspiration for this came from looking at an intriguing magic square in ‘The Complete Mike Rogers’ published by Magic Inc in 1975. This Reversible Magic Square is on page 24 and is credited to Royal Vale Heath who wrote the book ‘Mathemagic’. The square is unusual in that it can be turned upside down and it reads exactly the same and totals 264.”

Amazing Jumping Card Trick  –  Video Tutorial

Magic Lesson 19 – Finger Illusion Lesson:

The bending finger illusion is a great example of the saying ?less is more?. Sometimes just a glimpse of something is stronger than a longer look. There can be many reasons for this but the one that is critical today is that you will likely be caught out on the method to this if you do it longer than is required.

This same reason applies to large illusions used in stage magic shows as it does to compact illusions like this finger illusion. When you watch a the flashy stage illusions there is a reason why they are flashy and fast moving; it detracts from the method becoming obvious.

Magic Tricks Camel Cigarettes –  Retro Advertisements & Magic
Nice selection of advertisements from Camel cigarettes’…  “It’s Fun to Be Fooled” ad series.

This was Camel cigarette campaign that revealed a magician’s ‘secret’ in a full page advertisement. No, the Roadshow is not advocating smoking.. we are simply looking back at a nicely drawn set of ads designed to entice new smokers and to persuade smokers of Lucky Strikes to switch to Camels. R.J. Reynolds implied the Lucky Strike ads fooled consumers with illusions, and their goal was to ‘expose’ the illusions.

The Federal Trade Commission eventually contested the ads and declared them “inaccurate, false, and misleading..”

The Prediction of a Random Number Based Upon Your Date of Birth

Secretly write the number 4028 on a slip of paper. Fold it and hand to someone for safe keeping. This you explain is your forecast of an event with numbers that hasn?t yet occurred.

You now invite a student to write down their date of birth.

Now have them write down a significant year in their life below this.

Ask them to calculate how many years have elapsed since that significant year.

Finally have them write down the age they are this year below the other numbers.

Now get them to add up all the numbers like an addition.

EXAMPLE

Date of birth 1964
Significant year 1981
Number of years passed since that year 34
That persons age as of Jan 1st  this year 50
Now have that spectator add up the numbers.

1964
1981
34
50
——-
4029

Have your forecast read out and of course it?s the same number 4029 that you knew in advance despite not knowing the persons date of birth or the significant year they chose.

NOTE. When you instruct them to calculate how many years have passed, it is taken from their significant year to 2015 that is:

2015
-1981
=  34

Place a little emphasis in that you could not possibly know what years they would think of.

I guess it’s safe to say we’ve seen the worst of a strange and eventful winter. For a while I had a captive audience up north. I can joke about it, but I’m guessing those of you who experienced it first-hand are still a tad raw. At any rate.. I hope this issue of the Roadshow eases the ordeal and nudges you in a good direction.

CAAN TU TWO  –  A Two Card Miracle
Devised by J.K. Hartman, rendered by Paul Lelekis

EFFECT: A double revelation by the spectator!  The spectator actually finds BOTH cards at the numbers given!

METHOD: Have a deck of cards shuffled by the spectator.  The magician then relates a story of how his father did an ESP trick for him when he was only 7 years old.

The magician then pretends to look through the deck as if he is trying to concentrate on one single card.  Actually he does nothing!  Then he lays the deck down on the table.

The performer says, “I’ll show you a trick that my father played for me when I was just a kid.  I will play the role of my father and you will play me as a boy of only 7 years of age!”

The performer “transmits his thoughts” of the card to the spectator so that she may “read” his mind!  The spectator thinks of a card and says, “…the Queen of Hearts!”

The magician bursts out, “Yes you’re right!  I don’t believe it!  You’re ESP is amazing!  Well…it was a just a couple of years later when I realized that my father was just messing with me!”

“But, you actually got the right card!  I really was thinking of the Queen of Hearts – that’s amazing!”
“I think you’ve really got ESP!  Let’s test your ESP…now I want to try a demonstration of ‘where’- instead of ‘what’!”

As you mention ‘where’ – instead of ‘what’, turn the deck to face you only, and look for the QH.  Cut the deck so that the QH is now, secretly on the bottom of the face up deck (top of the deck!).

Whatever card happens to be cut to the face of the deck is the card that you will use for the ‘where’ part of this trick.  However, I normally cull or arrange a contrasting card to be at the face of the deck, being sure that the QH is at the back (top of face-down deck).

Suppose you’ve cut the Two of Spades to the face of the deck.  Take the 2S into your RH and the deck in the LH, placing the 2S, unseen, face down on the table.

“Since this is not a ‘what’ trick, but a ‘where’ trick, I’m going to show you this card.  It is the Two of Spades.  I’m going to place the deck behind my back and place the 2S somewhere into the deck.”

Place the deck behind your back and place the 2S, secretly, on TOP of the face-down deck!  Now use your right middle finger to pull any card out from the middle of deck, about 1/4”.  This “dodge” is to imply that the slightly out-jogged card, in the middle of the deck, is in fact, the 2S!  Very strong!

Bring the deck out from behind your back and immediately use your fingers to push the projecting indifferent card, flush with the deck.

“Since you saw ‘about’ where the 2S lies, I’m going to give the deck two riffle shuffles to ‘lose’ the 2S.  Remember – you need to remember the 2S and forget about the QH!  Make the QH leave your mind, remember the 2S but forget the QH!”

The above reference to “forget” QH will become very humorous!  You keep telling the spectator throughout the effect to ‘forget the QH – only remember the 2S!’  The very reason you’re saying to ‘forget the QH’ is what will make her remember it!  The spectators will become very ‘tickled” by this.  Play it up!

After two deliberate, controlled riffle shuffles (keep the top two cards intact!), pick up the deck into your LH.

“I’m going to show the top three cards and the bottom three cards to you, so that you know that the 2S is NOT near the bottom or the top.”

“By the way, please keep the other card, the QH, out of your head – O.K.?  This part only concerns the 2S!  So please forget the QH!”

As you say the patter above, “…the top three cards…” openly push over the top three cards and procure a left pinkie break under those three cards.  You will now show that the 2S is NOT near the top or bottom of the deck!  Begin with the three cards on the bottom of the deck.

Turn the face of the deck toward the spectators then spread the bottom two cards to show that the 2S is not one of the bottom three cards.

Next, lower the deck and pick up the top three cards above the break in RH Biddle grip, as only one card!

Display the top card (a triple!), then pick up the next card from the deck with your RH, fanned to the left of the triple.

Finally pick up a “third” card from the top of the deck with the RH also fanned to the left in Biddle grip.  This 3 card fan is actually 5 cards – but no one will be the wiser!

As you show the bottom and top cards, keep mentioning, “Do you see the 2S?  No?  Good…but NOT the QH!  Please keep the QH out of your mind!”

You are essentially showing everyone that the 2S (and QH) is not one of the top three or bottom three cards!  Replace the three (actually 5 cards) back on top of the deck.

NOTE: My reasoning for displaying the top three(?) and bottom three cards is to keep the selection within the “meaty” part of the deck.  This will thwart the “overly exuberant” spectator from choosing one of the top 3 or bottom 3 cards, which could prove to be trouble.  It’s rare but I’ve seen spectators do this before!

“Now the idea is to use your impressive powers of ESP to tell me at what number the 2S now lies.  I have narrowed your choice of numbers down, from between 4 and 49, inclusive.”

“However it is still a very large spread!  I’ll tell you what – instead of giving me only one number – give me TWO numbers between 4 and 49!”

“First give me the lower number and then the higher number.  Now – your two numbers can be far apart from each other or close together – or somewhere in between – it’s up to you!”

“Now I want you to concentrate only on the 2S – NOT the QH, O.K.?!  I need you to keep your mind clear of the QH – concentrate only on the 2S!  Please forget the QH!” (At this point do NOT yet let her name the two numbers!  Here’s where you have a little fun!)

“O.K. ma’am (or sir!), please keep the QH out of your mind!  Now what card are you supposed to remember?”  She’ll say, “…the 2S…”  “And what are you supposed to forget?”  She’ll always mention the card, “…the QH…”

“NO!!  You’re supposed to forget the QH!”  This always gets laughs!

By continuing to mention the QH, it will stand out in everyone’s mind – and it can be very humorous!  Repeat the, “…forget the QH!” line over and over!

“O.K., you want the numbers 17 and 23?  Are you sure?  You can change your mind if you want or stay with your first two impressions!  O.K., you’re staying with 17 and 23.”

Now you will, very deliberately, count off 17 cards (without reversing their orders!) from the top of the deck in your LH, into your RH.

Place the 17th card on TOP of the cards in your RH!  The top card of the packet in your RH will be (from the top, down) an indifferent card, 2S then QH.

Pause then continue your count from “18” placing each card on the bottom of the packet in your RH, until you reach the second number, 23.  Place the 23rd card on top of the cards in your RH.

Before you begin the patter below, openly push over the top two cards (indifferent) and procure a break under the third card which is the 2S!

Turn up a triple as you recite the patter below.

“O.K. – you called for these two cards, the 17th and 23rd, right?  Let’s look at your second choice, first…number 23.  Now I’m sure you remember that the card to remember is the 2S, right ma’am?  NOT the QH!  Ma’am – please stop fighting me on this – forget the QH!”

Make the above patter humorous, as if you’re scolding her!  “Alright – let’s take a look at the 23rd card.”

Turn up a triple to show the 2S – BIG reaction here!  “I don’t believe it!  It is the 2S!  Congratulations!”

Turn the triple, face down.  Do so by performing a stud turnover of the triple as described in J.K. Hartman’s book, CAAN CRAFT.  Immediately place the triple on the bottom of the deck!  Show the card one last time by holding the deck so that everyone can see the 2S.  This appears to be the finale!

“But that was your first choice of numbers, 17?  Let’s take a look at the 17th card just for the heck of it!”   (Turn the top card of the deck, face up, to display the QH!)

“I don’t believe it!  It’s the QH again!  Ma’am, I told you to keep the QH out of your mind!  No one ever listens to me!”

In the event that the spectator gives you her two numbers in reverse, for example, “…23 and 17…” continue exactly as above and no one will know the difference!   Congratulate her on her amazing ESP abilities – but “tease her” about her inability to keep the QH (or whatever card) out of her mind!

This effect will keep everyone in “stitches”!  There is so much emphasis placed on the spectator that you (the performer) will be free to perform without any scrutiny – a nice place to be!

COMMON CENTS  –  A Mental Effect

Mick Ayres

A guest is asked to imagine he has coins of different denominations in his pockets. You turn your back as he pretends to remove one of the coins, holds it in one hand and decides whether it is showing heads or tails. You turn around and immediately reveal which coins remain in the pockets—which coin was removed—which hand is holding that coin—and whether it is showing heads or tails. Then, to prove it wasn’t just a series of lucky guesses, you do it again.

Once you have acquired the cooperation of a willing guest, here is the script that follows. Smile broadly and, in an excited voice, say, “When the sun is high, the moon is full, the tide is slack and the planets line up—my senses tweak my imagination until it stretches out and I…feel…so…dang…perceptive. Like right now. It’s like I’m connected to everything around me—even you!

Here…I’ll show you what I mean.

“Use your imagination and pretend there are four different coins in your pockets. There’s a quarter here [point to his right pocket], a dime here [point to his left pocket], a nickel here [point back at his right pocket], and a penny here [point back at his left pocket]. Since we’ve never worked together before, we’ll keep things simple and just use two of the coins for now: the nickel [point at the right pocket again] and the dime [point at the left pocket again]. Of the nickel or dime, please focus your mind upon one…make your choice now. Got one? Good.”

Turn your back to the guest and say, “While I look away, please reach your hand into your pocket and pretend to remove the coin you have chosen. Close your fist tightly upon that imaginary coin and do not open it.

“Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like you to do a couple of things to help focus the mind. First, think about the value of the coin in your hand and multiply it by, say…fourteen.” The guest will immediately nod his head or say, “Done”. If so, you know he is thinking of the dime. However, if you sense the slightest hesitation you know the guest is thinking about the nickel. Once you know the identity of the coin it is a safe bet you can declare which hand is holding it as well. Remember how you pointed to the location of each coin earlier? By using the nickel and dime in this phase of the presentation, you have subtly forced the guest to use one pocket or the other and, by default, one hand or the other. So if the guest is thinking of the dime, it is in his left hand. The nickel will be in his right hand.

Keep talking and say, “There are different exercises like this that help a person concentrate better. Here’s another one that’s effective: Choose for yourself whether your coin will later show up heads or tails. If you choose Heads then hold the coin up by your own head and repeat the word ‘head’ five times to yourself. Do it slowly. Likewise, if you choose Tails then just hold the coin down by, well…your own tail and repeat the word ‘tail’ silently five times. When you are finished please hold both hands in front of you with your fists closed and say, ‘Done’.”

Turn around and face the guest. Look at his hands. Specifically, study the skin tone briefly. If the guest chose Heads and held his hand high for a slow count of five beats, then that hand will appear slightly paler than the hand that remained down by the side. Therefore, a difference in coloration tells you he chose Heads—and further confirms which hand holds the coin. If the coloration of both hands is identical then the guest chose Tails.

Once you have visually gained this last bit of information, you could just blurt out, “You chose the nickel and it is heads up.” But where’s the drama, the tension, the conflict, the theater in that? Delivering the revelation in a more detailed and progressive fashion is better. Make the following declarations: “I sense the quarter, the penny and the…dime…are still burning holes in your pockets. You decided to take out the nickel that is now in one of your hands. Specifically, it is held tight in your right hand. Finally, when you open that hand you have decided that nickel will be…tails up.” This approach gives the impression you have discerned four different pieces of information successfully.

Say, “If you think about it, these revelations are fifty/fifty propositions—just by taking a wild guess anyone can be right half the time. However, I think nailing ‘em down one after another like that puts this stuff in a different category.”

Now take this presentation a step further by saying, “Even though I’ve never been able to do this twice in a row, I feel like I’m still in the zone and wouldn’t mind giving it another shot. Are you game? All right! This time let’s use those two other coins, the quarter and the penny.” Make a gesture toward his right and left pockets respectively.

Turn away and say, “Think of the quarter or the penny. Now pretend to reach into your pocket and remove that coin. Again, hold it securely in your hand. Have you done so?” Wait for his answer. You want him to feel comfortable and responding freely this time.

Say, “Because we have done this before the pathways are open and the mental exercises are easier. This time, think of your coin and tell me when you have multiplied it by, say…nine.” This time, the slightest hesitation tells you he is thinking of the quarter in his right hand. An immediate response tells you he is holding the penny in his left hand.

Proceed with the same dialog provided earlier to determine if his coin will later show heads or tails. The dramatic final revelation is the same as well—with one small addition. Twice now, you have successfully named the three coins left behind, the coin he chose, which hand holds the coin and, finally, which side of the imaginary coin is showing.

Step back and smile broadly at your guest just like you did at the beginning of this presentation. Say, “You gotta admit—we’re not bad for a couple of people with no cents at all.”

CREDITS AND VARIATIONS

Royal Vale Heath’s 1933 book ‘Mathemagic’ proposed a method for determining a chosen coin based on the length of time it took to answer a simple math question. For the record, in 1998 David Harkey used a similar method in his still unpublished routine MindNumber which allows a performer to accurately determine the locations of three different coins—over the telephone.
Using skin coloration to determine which hand holds an object is a clever idea that dates back centuries (possibly to the time of Reginald Scot). However, using that same dodge to determine a heads or tails status is my own variation.

When performing Common Cents for children avoid the math by using four imaginary crayons—red and purple the first time, blue and orange the second time. Have the child think of a word that rhymes with the chosen color. Since nothing rhymes with purple or orange, you can easily obtain your answer. Finally, in lieu of heads or tails, discern whether the crayon is pointing up or down in the child’s closed hand.

BALLOON / BANG GUN SURPRISE –  A Treat for Children..
David John O Connor

EFFECT:  Two youngsters are invited to join the performer on stage. A pair of ‘goofy spectacles’ are placed on each boy as ‘safety glasses’. Handing a bang gun to one child with the instructions that he must not pull the trigger till you count 3.

The performer takes a round balloon and informs everyone that he will inflate the balloon, place it on the other boys head and on the count of 3, the boy with the bang gun will pull the trigger and there will be a Big Bang.

Placing the inflated balloon on the boys head, he begins to count, “One – Two” when suddenly the balloon bursts. The boy with the gun is kiddingly asked why he made the balloon burst too early.

Another balloon is inflated and placed on the other boys head and again, after instructing the boy holding the gun not to pull the trigger till you count 3. The performer starts to count again, “One – Two”, and again the balloon bursts. Again you ask the boy with the gun why he made the balloon burst before you counted to 3.

Blow up the third balloon then accidentally (?) let it fly off. Blow it up again instructing the gun lad to take aim again and only pull the trigger on the count of 3 and there will be Big Bang. Holding the inflated balloon on the other boys head at the count of three while shouting, “Pull the trigger, Pull the trigger,” you release the balloon (that was not tied off like the first 2) This balloon should scream off, while the boy pulls the trigger, releasing the banner that falls down that reads, “BANG”.

This routine can be filled with balloon gags and antics, like accidentally tying the balloon to your thumb then trying to shake it off. Blowing the balloon from the wrong end, stretching a balloon and allowing it to snap against the hand as though it was painful. Emphasize kiddingly with the boy that he is likely the cause of all the problems by causing the balloon to burst before you say 3.

REQUIRED:  An assortment of round balloons. A Vernet thumb tip with a thumb tack or small pin protruding on the outside (to burst the balloons) A large size Bang Gun prop available inexpensively from magic dealers. The bang Gun has a drop down ‘Bang’ banner.

ROUTINE:  Once your two assistants have joined you on stage; place the funny glasses on them.

One boy is given the gun with strict instructions not to pull the trigger before you count 3. . If he points it down, tell him not to shoot his foot,  then lift the child’s arm up.

With the thumb tip pricker in place unseen, blow your balloon up clowning around by blowing it the wrong way up, making funny noises etc.

Finally place the tied balloon on the other boys head with him facing away from the shooter. Instruct the boy with the gun to take aim and only pull the trigger on the count of 3. Burst the balloon using the thumb tip pricker on count 2 and immediately ask the boy pulling the trigger why he fired too soon, and he will probably disagree with you.

Goof around with the 2nd balloon tying it to your finger and shaking it to release it etc. Once the 2nd balloon is placed on the other boy’s head, start counting again, “One – Two”, and again burst the balloon. Kiddingly question the boy with the gun once again.

Finally blow up the 3rd balloon but don’t tie it off and hold it on the boy’s head, after telling the gun boy to “Take careful aim and only pull the trigger on the count of three and there will be a Big Bang”. Invite the audience to put their hands over their ears. Counting “One – Two – Three,” shouting, “Pull the trigger”, and release the untied balloon that flies off. The bang gun banner will drop down displaying the word BANG!

Thank your two assistants and remove the funny spectacles. I present each boy with a pre made balloon animal each, as you lead them back off the stage, asking for a round of applause for your two fine assistants.  It really is a riot of  fun routine with lots of built in laughter from the spectators.

Five Thoughts on Children’s Shows  –  Donavon Powell

Keeping with the children’s magic theme, I asked one of my online buddies, Donavon Powell, to put some of his experiences performing for children to paper. He did – And I’m glad. I would love to publish several other small features about performing for little ones if I could persuade some of you guys and ladies to share your thoughts with me. As you can see, Donavon didn’t have to compose page upon page to get his thoughts across. Just sent along your experiences and the English, grammar, and layout, if necessary, will be provided by my talented staff of writers.

(1) Keep the presentations short between Magical moments so you can control their attention

(2) Love Children.

(3) Move on quickly so they don’t backtrack,  but not so quickly that you confuse them.

(4) Love Children.

(5) Don’t always pick the uncomfortable child to help. Sometimes they are uncomfortable for a   legitimate  reason.

(6) Make the most out of the hams in your audience.

You’ll notice that I listed ‘Love Children’ as two of the thoughts.  There’s a reason for this:

First, if you don’t love children you probably shouldn’t perform for them. Children can tell if you are just going through the motions the same way adults can tell.  How many times have you seen a performer who is obviously just there for the paycheck? It takes you right out of the moment. The same holds true for children. If you don’t genuinely Love Children they will be able to tell and the performance will be difficult for you, and less enjoyable for the children (this applies to pretty much any audience).

Second, Love Children because of their ability to sustain a sense of wonderment.  That sense is generally what we are going for whenever we perform. Children exist in that state constantly. If you are appreciative of this it will show, and it will elevate the level of your performance in both your mind and that of your audience.

Tricks Without Names –  Another Mathemagical Medley of Semi-Automatic Tricks
Werner Miller

Trick #4

Have a 12-card stack as shown in Fig. 1 secretly on top of the deck.
Sort out the four Jacks (or produce them via any method you like), show them openly, then deal them face down into a row, in any order.

From the top of the deck, deal the first three cards singly onto the left-most Jack (thus reversing their order), the next three cards similarly onto the next Jack and so on, until each Jack is buried under three cards, then set the rest of the deck aside.

Assemble the four packets from left to right, i.e. place the first (left-most) packet on the second, then both on the third, and finally all three on the fourth (right-most). From the top down, the cards are now in the following order: 2S, 6S, 3H, J, 2H, 6H, 3S, J, AS, 5S, 4H, J, AH, 5H, 4S, J.

Openly reverse count the packet in pairs, calling out the number of cards already tabled: “2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 cards. I’ll give them a mix to randomize the order of the Jacks.” Execute a Klondyke Shuffle (Fig. 2), i.e. “milk” off the top and bottom cards until the packet is exhausted, dropping each pair on top of the foregoing one. “Another shuffle, and the Jacks are definitely lost. They could be anywhere, couldn’t they?” Repeat the mixing, then deal the cards into a row.

 “Let’s check out.” Using both hands, turn over the end cards of the row and place them back, face up: the AH and the AS. Continue turning over cards, proceeding symmetrically from both ends toward the middle, thus showing in ascending order Twos, Threes, Fours, Fives and Sixes, Hearts on the left and Spades on the right. (Fig. 3)

Finally, turn over the four remaining cards and slide them a bit out of the row: the four Jacks.
Use them in your next trick.

Alternative Version

Have the Queens and Kings secretly on top of the deck, stacked alternately. (Fig. 4)
Sort out (or produce) the four Aces, show them, place them face down in a row (Fig. 5), deal the top eight cards onto them (red arrow), discard the rest of the deck, and assemble the twelve cards from right to left (blue arrow).

(Note: The order of the suits of these cards does not really matter. But if you want to end up having Aces, Queens and Kings in the same suit order stick to the depicted example.)

 Give the combined packet two Klondyke Shuffles, then deal the cards singly into a face-down row.

Spell “F-O-U-R”, with “F” picking up the left-most card, with “O” placing it on the next one, with “U” placing this pair on the third card of the row, and with “R” placing these three cards on the fourth. In a similar manner, spell “A-C-E-S” from the right end of the row, piling up another 4- card packet. Turn the cards left over in the middle of the row face up: the four Aces. (Fig.6)
Climax: Turn over the 4-card packets too, and fan them face up showing four Kings on the left and four Queens on the right.  Use some or all of these cards in your next trick.

VIBE  –  A Special Deck from Bob Solari

A Review…

Innovation? I love innovation. I also love effects and methods from many years ago that have the power to make modern day magicians drool. There is so much we know about magic.. and so much we don’t know. VIBE, a special deck/method marketed by the ever resourceful Bob Solari, reflects the best of both.. what we know, in that the method itself is not original, but a method used many years ago by a long forgotten magi..  and what we don’t know, in that many magicians, myself included, will wonder why they didn’t know this technique considering the ease of use and flexibility it allows.

I’ll never reveal how this gem works, but I will tell you what you can do with Bob’s special deck. With no sleight of hand, you can easily separate the deck into reds and black or odds and evens. You can have any one suit shuffled into the deck.. and then find each of those cards, blindfolded even. Bob teaches four effects on the DVD, including one called ‘Out of This Galaxy’. Based on the premise of Out of This World, the handling is so simple even a total beginner with a few minutes practice can pull it off.

Other effects taught on the DVD include ‘Got The Vibe’, a find-a-card-at-any-location effect. ‘4 of Any Kind’, where any four of a kind can be dealt into the deck by a spectator.. and easily found by the magi. And a special effect, performed by Bill Wisch, that will leave even fellow magicians speechless.

Personally, I enjoy writing about effects I use. It is so easy to write when you have belief on your side.. Yes, I have storage bins full of effects and DVDs I’ll never use, and finding a slot in my very small close-up case is quite an achievement.. Going forward, I have two specially prepared decks in my case: One, according to Bob’s instructions, and Two, a variation of Bob’s instructions that allows me to perform a ‘special’ effect of my own.

You get the DVD for  $19.95, and that includes the method and detailed instructions for creating your own VIBE deck in 15 minutes or less. Suggestions for Making Gem Sticks –  A Working Tutorial

Some of us are fortunate enough to be magically talented. Others, like David Hanselman, are not only magically talented, but mechanically gifted in the art of creating wonderful magic props and illusions. I can honestly say, although I’ve done many things during my years, I’ve never created a working prop . Oh, I did stick a safety pin through the end of a match.. attach it to a rubber band.. pin it up my sleeve and make an impromptu pull, but I don’t think that counts.

Dr. David uses his woodworking talent to create, among other items, Gem Sticks that rival anything on the market. I have one of his creations that I wouldn’t part with for many pretty pennies. The gems are recessed into the stick, making them virtually invisible should you be a tad slow or should your angle be slightly off. March 14th, 2015 was ‘Pi Day’. That was reason enough for Ana Swanson to write a very informative article on the intricate and astonishing science behind the number  ‘p’, commonly called ‘pi’.. Circles play an integral part in our lives. The world is round, other planets and stars are round. And when you work your way down the list of objects known to man, the circle shape stands singularly as the shape of shapes. Even objects as beautiful and diverse as snowflakes consist of millions of tiny round water particles, which form the jagged crystals which bind to form a flake.

If you measure the distance across a circle, then divide that number into the distance around a circle.. you get  3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993751058209749

Pi doesn’t end there;  It goes on and on and on.. creating what some call ‘total randomness’., and what others call ‘ proof that God exist..’.  If you note the first five numbers.. 3.1415, you understand the significates behind 3/14/15 being a very special ‘pi day’.  (And, if you don’t believe in coincidences, just ignore that Albert Einstein was born on March 14th.)

If you divide, let’s say 2 into 7, your sum is 3.5. No more, no less. No long tail of numbers. Yet pi doesn’t seem to have an end. It’s what we call an irrational number and cannot be expressed exactly. Mathematicians have calculated pi beyond 13.3 trillion numbers. And, despite pi appearing completely random, there is hope that one day, in an instantaneous revelation, a number will fall into place and the face of God, or perhaps a geometric configuration of unfathomable beauty, will be revealed. Carl Sagan, in his popular novel, Contact, suggested the  creator of all may have hidden a cryptic message within the digits of pi.

Eagles long-snapper Jon Dorenbos wows ‘AGT’ judges, teammates with magic..

PHILADELPHIA – Simon Cowell isn’t all that intimidating – not when you line up across from angry 300-pound men for a living.

That’s what Philadelphia Eagles long snapper Jon Dorenbos does during his day job. Dorenbos, 35, has been snapping on punts and placekicks for 14 NFL seasons, the past 10 with the Eagles. Normally, he gets noticed only when something goes wrong.

But Dorenbos got noticed Tuesday night for something that went very right.

He appeared on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” braving a panel of Cowell, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Heidi Klum. Dorenbos performed card tricks that had the often skeptical judges wide-eyed in wonder.

The judges weren’t alone. Dorenbos’ teammates were watching, and why not? They have seen him perform spontaneously in the locker room over the years.
