Magic Roadshow #161

Magic Roadshow #161

MAGIC ROADSHOW  #161

 December 2014

Welcome to a new issue of the Magic Roadshow. I hope you find something in this issue that strikes your fancy and makes you want to grab a deck of cards, or a couple of coins, or a corn cob… or whatever makes your magic special.. and furiously practice with unabashed joy.

The Christmas season is almost upon us. and I want to sincerely wish each of you a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!  I know some of you prefer to call it the Holiday season.. and that’s perfectly OK, but I’m sticking with what I know. I hope every single one of you has a Blessed December, and all your wishes come true. I wish I could print out thousands of copies of the Roadshow and knock knock knock at your door.. hand delivering your copy, getting to know you, whilst sitting a spell and talking magic. That, for me, would be the Best Christmas of all.. ( Oh, I hope you don’t mind if I bring my family. Naturally, they would have to be a part of my trek.. My wife, Carolyn, our six children, our sixteen grandchildren, our five great-grandchildren, and our spoiled cat..)

2015 will be a brand new year, and with that comes the hope of fresh resolutions and new beginnings. I don’t know about you guys, but my wish next year is to actually watch the almost 40 dvds I’ve stockpiled the past couple years. They are a reflection of time itself… making me aware of all the ‘good intentions’ I’ve had, and proof of the tasks left undone. I truly admire those of you who can put the outside world aside and ‘make’ yourselves sit down and work on your magic.

Look for something special in this issue from my buddy, Paul Lelekis, and our benefactor, Jeff Hobson. Both have generously shared magic from their repertoire, and I hope you like it as much as I did..

Let me know if I can assist you with your magic.. Questions? Comments?  EMAIL ME

Red’s Card Trick

Jeff Hobson

I remember growing up in Detroit.  A time where you could walk down the street any afternoon and visit with most everybody.  Folks would often sit on their porches and wait for someone to pass by to have a chat with them.  Two houses down from where I lived was an old man named Red.  Apparently, in his younger days, he had had bright-red hair hence his name.  My father and I would take in a stroll many times during the week and visit with Red.  He was always very gracious and he loved to show me card tricks.  I think I’m the only one he ever revealed his secrets to since he knew I was interested in performing magic even at my tender age of 8.

There is only one of his card tricks that I have remembered and, since then, I’ve realized he was teaching me more of basic principle than a presentation.  He presented the trick as a blindfold, poker demonstration but with no real patter other than to simply explain his movements during the trick – a very common problem among amateurs today who seem to feel that the trick is everything rather than needing a presentation to make it magical.  He also didn’t have a blindfold, a common addition to many effects of this genre. He just didn’t look at his hands as he was doing the effect. It was almost as if the cards didn’t exist.

However, I realized that his presentation, or lack thereof, was one of the points that made this simple trick so amazing.  You really didn’t expect anything great to happen!  He just did it casually and the effect had to sink in.  It must have sunk in quite a bit for me to remember this after so many years!

This trick is based upon the simple principle that a stack of playing cards keeps the same running order even after the cards are cut.  Again, the casualness of the presentation and subsequent downplay of the cutting of the cards makes this seem like you’re a master of sleight of hand.  I will leave it to you to get to the starting point on your own since there are many different ways to begin.

Using only the 10’s through Ace’s set up the cards so that all are in the same suit order. (photo R1) If the 10’s are in CHSD order, then do the Jack’s, Queen’s, King’s and Aces in this same order. This is the only important part.  Assemble the cards for display not mentioning the suit order to your audience.  This could be the only “tell” when the spectators try to re-create the effect.  Remember being casual is the key to this effect.  I simply state, “I’m only going to use the high cards for this demonstration . . . 10’s through Aces.”   I give the audience a “casual” glance at the cards, close the spread, and place them on the table.  “Have you ever played poker?” I ask one of the spectators.  This was the only “patter” that Red used to begin this trick.  Regardless of the answer, I ask him or her to give the deck a “straight cut”.  I mirror a hand motion of cutting the cards as I say this. I want to establish to the spectator to cut the cards just once, without actually stating it, which might cause suspicion.

I have had some “smart” folks try to triple cut the cards.  This, of course, would ruin the trick.  If I think that I could have a problem with someone, I simply keep the cards in my hand and extend my arm toward the spectator asking them to “cut some cards off of the pack and place them on to the table”.  After they do, I then place the rest of my cards on top of the cut cards on the table. This establishes what I want to happen to the others who will now assist.  I don’t say much at this point other than to pass the cards to the next spectator.  I look them in the eyes. They should get the idea that they are supposed to cut the cards.  If not, I simply say, “And you?”  This minimal patter builds a bit of suspense and anticipation and I’m sure Red is smiling right now as I relive the memory of his effect.

After I have had the cards cut three or four times, I look around and say, “Anybody else?”  If I don’t get a response, I say to the first person who cut the cards, “Do you want to cut again?”  Again, this is said very casually as if to give the impression that we could do this all day long.  I never state that the cards are mixed.  That would defeat the tone set for the effect.

After everyone is settled, I take the cards and put them under the table to do the “dirty work”.  The action of putting the cards under the table should immediately cause suspicion but again, is sidetracked by the casual – or minimal – presentation.  I don’t look at my hands as they go beneath the table or say anything about what I have just done but continue the trick with a few simple questions directed toward the spectators.  Immediately, I look at the second spectator who cut the cards and say, “Did I ask you if you played poker?. . . No? . . Well do you?”  To another spectator I ask, “Do you know what makes up a good hand in the game?”  During these questions I execute the following moves to separate the cards.

The packet of cards is held in dealing position in the left hand. The first card is gripped or pinched between the first finger tip and thumb of the right hand. The left hand then pushes three cards between the right first finger and middle finger tips. (photo R2)  The left hand then comes back to the top to push off more one card and is pinched, again, between the first finger and thumb of the right hand. (photo R3)  Now the left hand goes back underneath to push three more cards to be pinched between the right first and second fingers. (photo R4)

This process is repeated three more times until the cards are exhausted.

When you are finished, you should have five cards pinched between the first finger and thumb of the right hand and the balance of the cards below being pinched between the first and second fingers.  With your left hand, grab the balance of the cards.  If you are practicing this for the first time, look at the five cards remaining in your right-hand fingers.  If you are easily entertained, you’ll be surprised to find you have a royal flush.  To continue the performance explanation, you will now bring only your right hand with these five cards, face down, up from underneath the table.  Do not look at the cards but simply place them on the table in front of the first person that cut the cards saying, “Here. . . this hand is for you. . .don’t look yet.”  Now, dip the right hand beneath the table again to join the left hand with the balance of the cards.

Repeat the whole process of separating cards except you will pinch only two cards between the right first and second fingers.   Then, bring the next, separated stack of five cards above the table, as before, and put these cards in front of another spectator.  Once again, the right hand goes below the table to perform the final separation of the cards simply pushing only one card between the thumb and first finger and then between the first and second fingers.

You can now take the two, separated stacks, one into each hand, and bring them to the tabletop.  Put these stacks in front of two more spectators. This process is lengthy to explain in words but only takes a few seconds when executed in a real time and with some practice.  The end result is that you have quickly separated the ‘mixed-up’ cards into four piles that now lay in front of four spectators.  You have done this without any apparent work or thought.

I now ask one the spectators, “Do you know what the best hand in poker is?”  Regardless of the answer, I say, “Turn over your cards,” while motioning to do so to all four people.  After a few moments of awe from the card holders, I “casually” say, “Hmmm, it looks like you’re all winners”.

A few additional tips:  You’ll find, with practice, that you can keep the “noise” from the cards to a minimum so that little or nothing will be heard from under the table that may indicate you’re counting the cards.   I have also done this effect while strolling and tablehopping if the conditions are so that you can do the counting behind your back without attention being focused from casual passerby’s. You can also, if standing, put your hands behind your back under your jacket if at all paranoid..

Two from Paul Lelekis – Video Tutorials

One of my best friends in all of magic is the prolific Paul Lelekis. Paul and I regularly ‘chat’ and share our magic, although I’m usually the one chatting and Paul’s the one doing all the sharing. I use the description ‘prolific’ mildly, as Paul is far more than prolific. He is the author of 18 ebooks, all sold on Lybrary.com, and is a very busy consultant, reviewer, and writer for The Linking Ring.

Paul has agreed to share two amazing videos with Roadshow readers. One is a technique, and the other is a tutorial for one of the most popular effects ever published in The Linking Ring.

** Special Note: I have published both videos to the Youtube platform. I have also published both as ‘unlisted’, meaning they will not show up in search engines or a search of Youtube. They are intended to be shared with Magic Roadshow readers and not republished on other sites without Paul’s permission.

The Trick That Can’t Be Explained – Video Tutorial

When Paul and I were discussing publishing this video in the Roadshow he told me…  “My trick is self-working and caused more stir in The Linking Ring magazine than any trick before it as was told to me by editor Samuel Patrick Smith.  There have been 6 articles written on this in TLR and a seventh is coming out next month!  Also Stephen Tucker, editor of The Budget, a European, magician’s e-zine asked me a couple of years ago if he could have permission to print it in his magic publication!  It published in August of 2012 of The Budget.”

This is basically a self-working card trick. Anyone who knows Paul knows that he is not a practitioner of self working card tricks!  So, if this one has remained one of his favorites for many years, then it must be quite special… ( Editors note – It is…you guys will like this one. )

Paul Lelekis’ Red/Black Separation Shuffle – Video Tutorial

Paul told me the back story behind the Red/Black Separation Shuffle, and, although he didn’t develop this, he did create a subtlety that makes the shuffle both easier and faster…

“One can’t understand how STRONG this shuffle is until you perform it for either laymen or magicians.  I’ve performed this shuffle many times for magicians, whenever I do lectures – AFTER my lecture!  Then it always causes a big stir!  In the late 1990s I was lecturing at a club in (I think) St. Pete, and there was one young magician (maybe 21 or 22) who acted like a heckler!  He “knew” everything!

He made a bunch of unnecessary comments about what he thought was a “better sleight” to use here and there – but I ignored him.  Then I performed the Red/Black Shuffle at dinner after the lecture and he JUMPED UP and yelled “No Way!!  How did you do that?”  I didn’t tell him…”

You can view ALL of Paul’s ebooks, all 18, at Lybrary.com .. They are, undoubtebly, one of the best values in all of magic..  Many are now considered underground classics…

Be sure to check out Paul’s definitive work on the Business of Table Hopping. Maybe my favorite of all his many ebooks. If you want to earn a steady income with your magic, this is the ebook for you….

Duct Tape Wallet – Video Tutorial

I first published this video, or one similar, about six or seven years ago. During the time since, I’ve published hundreds of videos. It’s unusual for me to remember specific videos from that far back, particularly since I can seldom remember what I did last week..

The duct tape wallet is not particularly handsome. Nor is it re-sellable on ebay or at your local flea market. But I STILL like it. Maybe it takes me back to my childhood.. when crafting was an integral part of my school day. Or, maybe it reminds me of endless hours spent in my workshop, doing the DIY thing.

Maybe it simply reminds me that time spent making something with my hands is time well spent… I’m sure with a little engineering you can convert your wallet to a Himber wallet, or something similar. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you….

TIPS & TRICKS –  Monthly Feature

OK Folks, I mentioned in the last Roadshow that I want to begin a column of magic tips and tricks. I want YOU to furnish the material. You don’t have to furnish the material publication ready.. just send what you want in any form you want and I’ll do the rest. It’s the IDEA that matters.

This can be in the form of the handling of a particular move or sleight – something you do that makes the handling easier, less visible, more convincing, etc… You can write it up or send a video. If you send a video, I’m going to convert it to something that’s accessible via a link. I don’t want to ask the readership to download a video file if I have other options. I may upload it as an unlisted Youtube video or upload it to Divshare.

I share everything of importance to me with you guys, and all I asks is that you guys be willing to share some little something with fellow magicians. Don’t worry about your style, spelling, grammar, or substance. If it’s something of importance to you, it’ll find a place in the routine of fellow performers. You and I will make it work.

TIP #1 … Chapstick

This is one of my favorite little tips. Although known to some, I know from the looks I get when I apply chapstick to my hand(s) it’s not occurred to many of you. Yes, I keep a tube of CHAP STICK Classic in my pocket just for those moments when I need a little extra ‘something’ on my hand to help complete a sequence of moves.

For instance, if I need to perform a Erdnase Color Change as part of an effect, I’ll put a light rub of ChapStick on my right hand finger tips and another rub on that portion of the pad of my hand that pulls the second card from underneath the top card. You don’t need much – just enough to get the job done. And you’ll find it’s good for several minutes of sensitive handling.

Aside from being odorless, the Classic flavor is clear, cheap, and has yet to stain my cards. You can buy a generic brand for about a dollar at most drug stores.. I know many card sharps use lotion specifically designed for this purpose, and that’s fine and dandy, but this quick fix works just fine for me…

Tip# 2  –  Nest of Coins –  A Useful Tip

Michael Lyth enjoys using a Nest of Coins when performing for a birthday person. Unfortunately, coins can become dislodged. Here is a unique solution that employs four inexpensive holders and adds an additional twist to the reveal. I’ve converted the document to a PDF for ease of viewing and saving.

Thanks again to Michael for sharing with Roadshow readers. Now, if I could only persuade the other 7999 of you to do the same.. (smile)

How the Grinch Stole Christmas — Scott Well’s “The Magic Word” Podcast

Scott Wells is rightfully proud of his latest podcast, How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Not just because of the timely subject matter.. but because this is podcast #200.  As a publisher who has grudged through 161 issues of the Roadshow, I can surely appreciate all the time, dedication, and hard work that goes in to each of these modules.

Aside from being issue# 200, this is a very special podcast.. especially if you consider the uh.. talent.. that Scott compiled to produce it. How about Eugene Burger as the Grinch..  How about a star-studded lineup to make things truly interesting… Richard Osterlind, Marc Salem, Rick Merrill, George Tait, Steven Bargatze, Ice McDonald, Mandy Farrell, Eric DeCamps, Rocco Silano, Boris Wild, Bob Cassidy, Docc Hilford, Tim Ellis, and Tim Trono.

Skeptic Michael Shermer Shows You How to Bend Spoons with Your Mind

The Bulletproof Musician Blog –  Why Magicians Should Read This Blog…

Performance psychologist and Juilliard graduate Dr. Noa Kageyama teaches musicians how to do their best under pressure. What does this have to do with magicians.?  In the total scheme of things.. a whole lot actually.

Practice is practice. And practice is what separates the amateur from the advanced magician.. and the semi-pro from the pro. It’s the ability to learn and achieve success through practice that takes performers from one level to the next. Those performers who never learn HOW to practice never learn the proper advance skills. They become mired in their own mediocrity.

Dr. Kageyama’s blog delves into the science of practice.. and what you can do to vastly improve your practice habits. Also, the good Dr. has published a number of posts on overcoming performance anxiety, which has stymied many a talented magicians.

“The purpose of this website is to teach musicians how to overcome stage fright, performance anxiety, and other blocks to peak performance. The specific mental skills you develop will allow you to experience the satisfaction of performing up to your abilities – even when the lights are brightest. Wait, let me rephrase that. Especially when the lights are brightest.”

Pamela Meyer: How to Spot a Liar  – A TED Talk

Pamela Meyer explains, in 18 minutes, how to spot a liar. She first asks you to look to your left, and see the liar. Then, look to your right, and see the liar. Lastly, look in a mirror.. and see the liar. Her contention is all of us lie at some time or another.. some for nefarious reasons, and others for legitimate reasons. With that in mind, wouldn’t it be nice to KNOW when you are being lied to? Wouldn’t it be nice to know the tell-tale signs that give away the deceivers amongst us?

“On any given day we’re lied to from 10 to 200 times, and the clues to detect those lie can be subtle and counter-intuitive. Pamela Meyer, author of Liespotting, shows the manners and “hotspots” used by those trained to recognize deception — and she argues honesty is a value worth preserving.”

MOST….

Imagine any and every field possible. There are so many brands, so many choices, so many claims, so much clutter, that the central challenge is for an organization or an individual is to rise above the fray. It’s not good enough anymore to be “pretty good” at everything. You have to be the most of something: the most elegant, the most colorful, the most responsive, the most accessible.

For decades, organizations and their leaders were comfortable with strategies and practices that kept them in the middle of the road—that’s where the customers were, so that’s what felt safe and secure.

Today, with so much change and uncertainty, so much pressure and new ways to do things, the middle of the road is the road to nowhere.

As Jim Hightower, the colorful Texas populist, is fond of saying, “There’s nothing in the middle of the road but yellow stripes and dead armadillos.”

Magic Roadshow #160

Magic Roadshow #160

 MAGIC ROADSHOW #160
November 2014

Hello Friends

Welcome to a new Magic Roadshow. If this is your first visit, prepare to dig in.. We are on the verge of the Winter season – and my very favorite holidays. I’m simply not a warm weather kind of guy, and I function so much better when the air has a little ‘nip’ in it. Of course, this issue could become a measuring stick, and I could be forced to admit that, in actuality, I’m no better in cold weather than warm. Time will tell….

I’m beginning to take the Roadshow down a new path. I honestly feel my readership has experienced enough of ‘me’ of late. I’ve asked some of the best magicians in the world to provide entertainment for you guys, and we will all enjoy a really major influx of exclusive effects from our contributors. This month, look for material from one of the hottest guys in magic, and one of the Illusionists (The Trickster).. Jeff Hobson. Immediately after Jeff’s effect,  and straight from Las Vegas, Seth Grabel has shared two ditties to make your day. I know you guys remember Seth best from his time on America’s Got Talent.. but I’m guessing Howie Mandel remembers him best of all….

Downloads? Yes, I haven’t forgotten you guys who love downloads. Look for something from a guy named Tarbell, and something more from a partnership between Queen Mary, University of London, and the University of Warwick.. I think you’ll REALLY appreciate these two…

Wish I could go on and on about all the ‘magic’ in my life.. but sometimes we need to become more introspective and take time to use our noggin’s for something other than a hat rack. The cool days of November are perfect for contemplating magic, and where we want to go with it, as opposed to barreling full throttle down the magic highway to destinations unknown…

Remember, magical contributions to the Roadshow are highly encouraged. I would love to open my inbox tomorrow and find dozens of ideas and effects from you guys.. and ladies. I’m thinking of beginning a section devoted strictly to thoughts and ideas that are not complete effects.. but something readers want to share with others. This could be a handling, a unique move, patter, or anything else that makes an effect work for you. Let me know your thoughts on this..

One from Jeff Hobson – Effect

“Jeff Hobson has starred in his own, one-man show, “Money and Madness” and been the Master of Ceremonies for countless special events and production shows including the “World’s Greatest Magic Show” and “V-The Ultimate Variety Show.” Hobson has opened for several big headliners, including Phyllis Diller, Barbara Mandrel, Lee Greenwood, David Sanborn and Roy Clark.

His television appearances include HBO, Showtime’s Comedy Club Network, Fox Family’s “Masters of Illusion,” NBC’s “Magic on the Edge” as well as the star of Thames Televsion’s “Magic Comedy Strip,” a 16 week televison series in England.

Jeff Hobson is a favorite entertainer among many of the Fortune 500 companies and has garnered prestigious awards, including “Stage magician of the Year” by the Academy of Magical Arts (AMA), and “Best Magic Review” by the World Magic Awards for his role as star and producer of the critically acclaimed “Carnival of Wonders” show at the Reno Hilton and Casino, Nevada”. Kiss-Card Trick  –  A Special Effect for Roadshow Readers

Here’s a twist on the Kiss-Card trick where a lipstick print is seen to appear on a selected card. This routine has always played very well for me and, if you like flirting with the opposite sex, you’ll love doing this. The kicker is that the recipient gets your advertising in their hands and you on their mind.

The original plot of the trick was to have a card selected and returned to the deck in the “usual” manner. The magician then had some byplay with the spectator about giving a kiss to the magician. This situation could be made long or short, playful or romantic. In the end though the deck was spread and the “kiss” had found it’s way onto the back of the playing card. The chosen card, with the lipstick imprint on it, was given to the spectator as a souvenir

My twist is to have a “topper” ending by having the chosen card’s face change into a clever business card of sorts.

Here’s what you do. Use blank-face cards that match the deck your working with  You can either hand write each one or use a computer to print white, self-adhesive labels. If you do the later, you won’t necessarily need to use blank-faced cards since you’d be covering the face of the card up with the label. Print the words, “For a good time call Jeff 123-
1111” (using your own name and telephone number of course) spacing the sentence over two lines making the size of the text large and bold akin to graffiti on the public bathroom walls (photo K1) You’ll also need to put a nice big kiss on the back of the card in the center. I printed custom, clear self-adhesive labels for this purpose. (photo K2) You could also use the French technique but the choice is entirely yours!

Before you start you will place this card, face down, at the bottom of the deck. Spread the cards face down and have one selected being careful, of course, not to expose the “kiss” on the bottom card. If I think the spectator is trying to select the bottom card, I just jog the bottom card toward me slightly as I spread the cards. I take the card back from the spectator. Yes, I take it back with the words, “Give the card to me . . . it doesn’t matter whether I see it or not.” Here’s the reason. I want the card on the top of the pack. If I ask a spectator to place the card on the top of the pack there are occasions where I have had those spectators who are “over zealous” attempt to stick the card somewhere in the middle of the pack. This makes for an uncomfortable situation to say the least and can ruin the pacing of the trick. Trust me on this one!

At this point, I do not look at the card even though it really doesn’t matter. I simply cut the card into the middle of the deck. There are no fancy moves here – and don’t try to add any – they’re not necessary. Just keep it simple! With a single cut of the deck you will have placed the special kiss card directly above the selected card. A line like, “Let’s lose the card somewhere in the center of the deck,” covers the moment perfectly giving you a motivated action.

Now comes the fun with the spectator. If you’re bold ask her, or him even, to give you a little kiss on the cheek. If you wish the routine to be a bit more reserved, ask your assistant to blow you a kiss. Act as if you’ve “caught” the kiss on your cheek. You can really play this up if you wish. I usually patter about the kiss traveling from my cheek down my arms and into the deck of cards. As I spread the cards to the kiss card I say, “It seems that your kiss found one card.”

I then cut the deck to bring the kiss card to the top and prepare for a double-lift. “Wouldn’t it be amazing. . .” I pause my speech as I perform a double-lift to reveal the chosen card and continue, “if the kiss found your card?” During the usual surprised response, I take the opportunity to casually turn the double card back face down and slide only the top card off the deck onto the table or, simply hold the single, kiss-card in my hand. The spectator thinks I am holding the selected card. I now say the best lines. “Did you have a good time?” After the spectator says yes, I turn over the card as I reply, “Well, for a good time, call me at 999-333-1111!”

The laughs and smiles are certain. I’ve done this trick hundreds of times and this is always my favorite ending. I hope you enjoy it.

Two from Seth Grabel –  Easy to Perform Tricks That Get a Super Response..
This month we want to Thank Seth Grabel for his contributions to the readers of the Magic Roadshow. Known as one of the premier performers in Las Vegas, Seth has stunned millions on ‘America’s Got Talent’, entertained tens of thousands working with The Amazing Johnathan, and amazed some of the biggest names in show business with his private performances…

“Grabel has brilliantly created shows onstage and off that leave audiences with big smiles, eyes widened, and jaws dropped. From the interesting characters he weaves into his stage shows to the amazing slight-of-hand magic he performs up close. Grabel’s talent often leaves people saying, ‘There goes the next David Copperfield’.

Seth has appeared on EXTRA, Playboy TV, Univision, and CBS among others. He takes every magic trick to the limit, leaving his viewers astonished, completely blurring the lines between reality and illusion.

With an impressive body of work behind him, 2011 marked the year for an official introduction onto the national spotlight. As a highlight performer on NBC’s “America’s Got Talentt”, Seth rattled the cage of the entertainment industry, executing various forms of magic—black, illusionary, and of course AcroMagic. He was an overwhelming fan favorite, and brought high praise from all the judges—especially Howie Mandel.”
FINGERED EAR TRICK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ip-EPdSE5Q

This is a real gem. The ear trick is super fun to do and always gets great reactions, its super easy to do and you can do it anywhere.  Take your right thumb put it under your ear lobe and stick your pointer finger in the middle of your ear. Then take your middle finger and place it on top of your ear. Touch your thumb to your middle finger and bring the two ends of your ear to each other. Now wiggle your pointer finger back and fourth! This easy trick is so fun to do and always gets a great reaction.  I usually stick a pen or pencil in my ear then go into the Fingered Ear Trick.
SPOOKY SPIDER TRICK
(Inspired by Jim Pace’s The Web.).

Supplies:

1 fake black spider ring that you can buy from a Halloween store.. ( and NOW is the time to stock up )

Double stick tape

This trick is super fun and always gets a great reaction. To prepair the spider cut off the ring and place a peice of double stick tape where the ring was. Now you are ready for the spooky spider trick!

You have to do get in the position where the top of the spectators hand is facing down. You can do a magic trick or you can ask to read someone’s palm. I like to do a coin effect where and switch the coin for a coin that has a spider on it. When you are doing the magic trick stick the spider on the back of your spectators hand. Finish the effect and allow your spectator to turn their hand over. As soon as they see the spider they will Freak out. You can also use a plastic cockroach, bug, toad or anything else that is creepy and can stick to the bottom of a hand. Have fun creating people out and if you send a video of the reactions to marketing@sethgrabel.com we will send you a free trick!

For Android and iPhones – My Pet Boris Magic Spider

OK folks.. here’s a little app that will give you the creeps. I hate spiders… but I really like this app. Two of my favorite effects in all of magic, for my use, are both iphone apps.. and this is one of the two. Combine this with the Spooky Spider trick above and you’ll have two effects guaranteed to get a great response from your spectator. Response is everything. Your spectator will remember an effect that garners emotions much longer than one that relies on surprise.

Go to the website and watch the video. It’s fairly short and you’ll see exactly what you’ll get for the princely sum of $1.99. Like me, you’ll have possibilities running rampant through your noggin’..

Math’s Made Magic – A Handbook of Magical Mathematical Tricks –  Free PDF

I love professionally produced PDFs. What is a professionally produced PDF? One that is slick, impressive, useful, informative, and most of all… fun. This is almost 70 pages of fun, not to mention pages and pages of interesting ‘secrets’…  Written by Peter McOwan and Jason Davison as an interesting way of training basic mathematics to teens and adults.. this far exceeds those goals, and looks much like MAGIC in the process.

“Within the pages of this book you will find inventive illusions and mind-melting magic to amaze you, your friends and family. You will also explore some fundamental mathematics powering the tricks. Learning and entertaining go hand in hand in magic. Understanding the secret techniques, combined with fantastic presentation and practice can make any trick unbelievable.”

“A sound understanding of basic mathematics underpins science and engineering. We hope this book helps you teach these subjects and gives you and your pupils the opportunity to develop presentation and communication skills. It may also open the door for others creating new mathematical magic and start some people on the road to a fascinating new
hobby too.”

Peter McOwan is a Professor of Computer Science at Queen Mary, University of London.
Jason Davison is a Master of Mathematics (MMath) student at Warwick University.

This book was developed as part of the Strategic Partnership between Queen Mary, University of London, and the University of Warwick.

——————————————

And Speaking of Prof. Peter McOwan – Press Release from Queen Mary, University of London released 11/17/14

Magic tricks created using artificial intelligence for the first time…

Researchers working on artificial intelligence at Queen Mary University of London have taught a computer to create magic tricks.

The researchers gave a computer program the outline of how a magic jigsaw puzzle and a mind reading card trick work, as well the results of experiments into how humans understand magic tricks, and the system created completely new variants on those tricks which can be delivered by a magician.

The magic tricks created were of the type that use mathematical techniques rather than sleight of hand or other theatrics, and are a core part of many magicians’ repertoires. The tricks, details of which are published today (Monday) in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, proved popular with audiences and the magic puzzle was put on sale in a London magic shop. The card trick is available as an app called Phoney in the Google Play Store.

Co-creator of the project, Howard Williams, explains how a computer can aid trick creation:

“Computer intelligence can process much larger amounts of information and run through all the possible outcomes in a way that is almost impossible for a person to do on their own. So while, a member of the audience might have seen a variation on this trick before, the AI can now use psychological and mathematical principles to create lots of different versions and keep audiences guessing.”

The magic jigsaw involves assembling a jigsaw to show a series shapes, then taking it apart and reassembling it so that certain shapes have disappeared using a clever geometric principle. Creation of tricks of this kind involve several simultaneous factors such as the size of the puzzle, the number of pieces involved, the number of shapes that appear and disappear and the ways that the puzzle can be arranged. Something this complex is ideal for an algorithm to process, and make decisions about which flexible factors are most important.

The mind reading card trick involves arranging a deck of playing cards in a specific way then, based on a few seemingly innocuous pieces of information from the audience, identifying a card that has been seen selected from the deck and using an Android app to reveal the card on a mobile phone screen. The computer was used to arrange the decks in such a way that a specific card could be identified with the least amount of information possible. The program identified arrangements for the deck that on average required one fewer question to be asked before the card was found than with the traditional method. The app simply avoids the magician having to remember the order of the cards.

Professor Peter McOwan, part of the QMUL team who worked on the project, added:

“Using AI to create magic tricks is a great way to demonstrate the possibilities of computer intelligence and it also forms a part of our research in to the psychology of being a spectator. For example, we suspected that audiences would be suspicious of the involvement of technology in the delivery of a trick but we’ve found out that isn’t the case.”

Paul Gertner and Trade Show Magic – Articles

Another subject I rarely tackle is Trade Show Magic. I know many magicians who would LOVE to do trade shows.. but don’t have the props, presence, or connections. One thing I have learned about any subject is… if you want to master it, find the best in the world and learn everything you can possibly learn.

When it comes to corporate magic, Paul Gertner is one of the very best in the world. I recently ran across Paul’s blog, which offers up solid tips and tricks for anyone wanting to take on the corporate world. Read, learn, read again… and it’s all shared freely. While I’m on the Subject of Trade Shows…..  – Resource

Anders Boulanger is C.E.O. and founder of the Infotainers. He is a certified speaking professional and has been building crowds and generating leads for clients since 2007. I recommend Anders blog as a great tool for learning some of the inside information concerning trade show magic.. ( I am not affiliated with Anders )

“When he was 5 years old he was given a Fisher-Price Magic set for Christmas. That one toy sealed his fate and as they say the magic bug bit him. At 12 he was performing at birthday parties. After graduating high school he paid his way through university earning himself a bachelor degree in Physics. With his education “out of the way” he set his sights on performing full time as a professional magician has done so ever since.”

Along the way, he was fortunate enough to be personally trained by the legendary trade show magician Joel Bauer..

Check out the detailed blog and various videos. If you’re interested in Trade Show Magic, you’ll Thank me…

Chop Cup Magic – A Free PDF from Michael Lyth

Michael has been a friend of both me and the Roadshow for a number of years. Our friendship has been one-sided, considering he has freely given more to Roadshow readers than I have to his coffers. Here is another effect, complete with pictures, using a prop I  fail to promote properly throughout my musings. Part of the reason is I do not have friends who are versed in the chop cup. It seems everyone ownes one.. but no one excels in its use.

Yes, you’ll have to do a little doctoring on a cup.. but it’s a fairly simple task that I trust you can handle with ease. Heck, I think even I can do this..

Cool MONEY Card Trick REVEALED – A Special Gimmick from Andy Field

A special Thanks to Vi Frank and Jim at the Magic Portal.. ( I actually spoke with Vi and Jim after their recent return from the convention in Daytona. They called to tell me they spent the weekend with Rudy Coby.. while I spent the weekend watching reruns of Seinfeld….)

I love a good gimmick, particularly if it actually works. Andy’s gimmick REALLY works. This is so easy to make and is guaranteed to work. I can think of a dozen uses for this, aside from the obvious uses demonstrated by Andy. Watch the video.. make the gimmick.. fool your friends and fellow magicians…

MagicianBusiness.com continues their impressive quest to keep magicians truly informed about subjects that are seldom, if ever, written about by other sites/publications. In this 50 minute podcast, Todd Neufel discusses contracts, refunds, deposits, documents, and other things ‘legal’.

Todd is well suited to offer his thoughts on these topics because, in addition to being a performer, he holds a law degree.  That should get your attention. Neither MagicianBusiness or the Magic Roadshow represents this podcast as ‘legal advice’, you must be a practicing attorney to offer that, but we do promise that all the information will be very insightful and informative for any magician who considers himself/herself a professional.. on any level…  Topics Include:

– Business organization
– Having the correct documentation
– What is a contract?
– Why contacts help customer anxiety.
– How to deal with disagreements you may have with a client
– How to stop it from getting ugly with a client
– Deposits – the benefits and disadvantages of taking them
– How much should you ask for a deposit?
– Can you ask for full payment before the booking starts?

The Secrets Behind Harry Houdini’s Ten Greatest Illusions – Article
Steve Winalda

There is an unwritten rule among magicians never to reveal how a trick is done. So when a 2004 exhibition explained Harry Houdini’s illusions, magicians around the world were apoplectic. David Copperfield called it a breach of magic protocol, and performers declared that they would boycott the exhibition. Many claimed to still use Houdini’s tricks themselves.

But Harry has been dead nearly 90 years. Despite their claims, few modern illusionists use his dated techniques. And the great magician’s secrets had been revealed decades earlier. He had been in his grave just three years when his team began spilling the beans.

This list is for those who want to know Houdini’s secrets. Those who don’t want to know should stop reading now…

Rudy Coby – (2) One Hour Videos

These two magic presentations were first broadcast by Fox TV in 1995 and 1996. At the time, they were strangely different and creative, inspiring a generation of magicians that include Criss Angel and Chris James. I remember watching the first.. Rudy Coby: The Coolest Magician on Earth, and experiencing an epiphany. Suddenly, I discovered the type of magician I wanted to become…

Needless to say, things didn’t work as planned, and my magic took a different turn.. But I still thoroughly enjoy watching these ground breaking shows.. I hope you will too.

Ancient vs. Modern Magic

“Judging from the accounts which history has preserved for us of the marvels performed by the magicians of antiquity, it is evident that these men were very skillful in practicing their art. It cannot be said, however, that the ancients were more proficient in their art than modern magicians are. Robert Houdin, the greatest of the early modern conjurers, has said, “Antiquity was the cradle of magic — but only because the art was yet in its infancy.”

The explanation then, for the seemingly greater miracles that were produced in ancient times, is that people believed in the supernatural powers of the magicians. The effects these magicians produced were believed to come from inspiration from higher or lower powers and thus took on a tremendous significance for the people.

The effects assumed the proportions of miracles in their minds. Today, these effects, while still mystifying and startling, are not regarded as produced by gods or demons. Thus has arisen the idea that something of the art of conjuring has been lost. Nothing, however, has been lost and very much has been gained in the art of sleight of hand. It is merely that the attitude of people has changed with the enlightenment of modern civilization regarding the supernatural, and now they regard Magic as an Art — and the most entertaining of all Arts.”
Harlan Tarbell, The Original Course in Magic.

Amy Cuddy: Your body language shapes who you are – TED Talk

Body Language is the gateway to the subconsious mind. We all express our innermost thoughts and feeling, whether we mean to or not. Unlike certain pseudo-sciences, whos’ true worth is debatable, body language is for real. Although we don’t usually think of a smile or a frown as body language.. they are just that.. an expression of our inner thoughts. And just as a smile gives away our momentary happiness, many other body movements also give away our feelings.

Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how “power posing” — standing in a posture of confidence, even when we don’t feel confident — can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.

MAGIC ROADSHOW 159
October 2014

Hello Folks..

Welcome to a new Magic Roadshow. If this is your first issue, I sincerely hope you find something inside that makes you want to come back. That’s our goal.

I hope all of you who celebrate Halloween, and all it’s various forms in different countries, have a GREAT one. I’m beyond the dressing up stage myself, but I so enjoy watching others dress as gouls and goblins, spooks and zombies, and all the variations…

This issue is a little late. I had to get away a little while before summer tucked it’s head and disappeared into the winter night. My wife, Carolyn, and I enjoyed several days at Murrel’s inlet and Pauley’s Island on the South Carolina coast. We love fresh seafood and shopping, so we were almost in Nirvana..

I also attended half the TRICS convention in Charlotte. Scott Robinson put on another wonderful close-up convention featuring the top talent in the world. If you get a chance to attend.. do it. This has become my favorite convention….

I’m going to keep things simple and get on with the magic..

If you have comments or questions.. EMAIL ME  ( Rick@MagicRoadshow.com )

Strangers in the Night – A Con (sort of…)

‘Strangers in the Night’ was a Frank Sinatra classic. For some totally unknown reason, I woke one morning humming it, and I can honestly say it had to come from somewhere really deep in my noggin’. It did make me think of Frank Sinatra, the singer who made it a classic, and thinking of Sinatra maked me think of early Las Vegas. Thinking of early Vegas makes me think of a time when Vegas was on the threshold of ushering in what I call ‘scientific betting’… that’s betting that utilized both science and psychology to give the house an edge. Vegas changed the way people bet, it changed the way the average joe looked at gambling, and it created bookies who discovered they didn’t have to fix a game to win big. Although they were the last to change, smart Con Men learned from Vegas bookies that winning the ‘majority’ of the time was a much better strategy than trying to win 100% of the time.

This is one of my favorite ‘restaurant’ effects. I’m not big on card effects when working a restaurant, but I can’t resist this little ‘Con’…

Magician: My names’ Rick, and I’m a magician. Although I spend the vast majority of my time studying and practicing my magic, I have a fascination with gambling, gamblers, and con men. I’d like to show you a demonstration of a typical ‘con’, and how the modern confidence man uses both psychology and statistics to win the vast majority of the time.

( After laying down my close up pad, actually a smallish mouse pad, I take a small packet of cards from my pocket. Holding them face down in the palm of my left hand, I carefully lift the top card with my right hand, flip the top card momentarily for the customer to see, but only for half a second, and call it.. “Ace of Clubs”. I promptly turn it face down and drop it on the pad. I repeat the same with the Ace of Diamonds, then the Ace of Spades, and lastly the Ace of Hearts. The customer has legitimately seen each Ace as called. I pick up the packet and return it to my left palm…)

Magician: The Con Man would begin his con by flashing the four Aces. There’s no con in flashing the Aces.. but there IS a lot of paychology. Remember I mentioned that the modern confidence man uses psychology to win bets? Unlike Con Men of years past, they now have actual scientific studies to tell them how the typical ‘mark’ will react. Using these studies, they can predict with uncanny accuracy the odds of winning or losing. They don’t win every time, but they win the majority of the time… and that assures the bills are paid..

If you’re willing to play the part of the ‘Mark’, I’m willing to bet you 3 to 1, my three dollars against your 1 dollar, that you cannot  remember the correct order of the four Aces I showed you roughly 30 seconds ago. You see, science tells us that if you only glimpse something, as opposed to studying it, you will likely forget what you saw in 30 to 45 seconds. All the Con Man has to do is keep the Mark occupied for 30 seconds or more after showing the Aces – and you’ll forget what you saw. Statistically, at this stage of the con, 88% percent of the folks lose….   If you want to bet, let’s bet.. but if you aren’t sure of the order, I’ll offer you another bet with a better chance of winning.

(Nine out of Ten will not take a guess on the order of the four Aces.  I’ll tell you momentarily what to do if they do.. Assuming they don’t take the first bet.. the conversation goes like this…)

Magician: Let’s cut the number of Aces you need to remember in half. That will increase your chances of winning by a factor of two.

( I pick up the packet and deal the top two cards, face down, to the customer. I pull the top card of the remaining cards I hold about an inch to the left of the bottom card, then turning the two cards face up as one for the customer to get a quick peek, then lay both face down maintaining the same position) (see picture)

Magician: Did you see my two Aces? Hold your thoughts for a moment, or 30.. Remember the 30 second rule I mentioned earlier? Well, it still applies. In roughly 20 more seconds, odds are you’re going to forget what you saw, or at least become unsure enough that you’ll lose your confidence. Scientific studies tell the Con Man he’s going to win 75% of the time at this stage. Certainly that’s not as good as the 88% I mentioned earlier, but it’s still good enough… Ready to guess?  ( Some will… depending on how long you flashed the Aces.)

( If your customer guessed the four Aces correctly earlier, tell them that they’re sitting on 3 dollars of your money. Bet them an even 10 dollars they can’t guess which two Aces they’re holding. )

(Since you flashed the Ace of Clubs and the Ace of Hearts, the customer guesses his two are the Ace of Diamonds and Spades.. )

Magician: Unfortunately, the Con Man doesn’t win every time. Even with a 75% success rate, he still loses 25% of the time to sharp folks like yourself. ( I slowly turn MY two Aces face up, revealing the Ace of Clubs and Hearts, and lay them face up on the table ) You’re right.. you have the Spade and Diamond, and were you betting with a Con Man.. you would have kicked his butt. Fortunately for me, I’m not a Con Man.. I’m a magician.. and unlike Con Men.. magicians win 100% of the time. It’s all in the Magic….

( I turn over the customers two cards to reveal the Queen of Spades and the Queen of Diamonds.. )

There is nothing proprietary about this trick. The response you get when the customer sees the two Queens though IS special. Your packet contains the following, face down, from top to bottom: Ace of Clubs, Ace of Diamonds, Ace of Spades, the two Queens, and the Ace of Hearts. You begin by showing the Club, Diamond, Spade, and the last three as one – showing the Heart on the bottom.

-IF- the customer should guess the order correctly, show the four Aces and congratulate them. Tell them they would have won your three dollars, but, like any good Con Man, you’re going to give them a chance to win even more.

Regardless of whether they bet on the four Aces.. you pick up the packet and place the top card, one of the Queens, in front of the customer. Now place the second card in front of the customer. You’re holding all four Aces. Making sure the packet is square, gently slide the top card to the left about an inch. Turn this packet to the customer, giving him a glimpse of the top and bottom Ace, the Club and Heart, and lay the packet on the mat in the same configuration. NOTE: I use Bicycle Arch Angels. They are very thin. Holding three cards as one is fairly easy with this brand. Sliding the top card to the left as pictured hides the edge of the three cards from the customer. Bicycle Carnival and Aviation brand also work excellently..

All you have to do at this point is make sure the three Aces stay tightly together. Again, the speed which you show your two Aces determines the number of customers betting at this point.

In the event the customer still isn’t sure what Aces he holds, give him one last chance. Pick your four Aces up just as you set them down, casually as talking.. take the top offset Ace and move it to the bottom, still offset about an inch to the left. Turn the packet over.. and lay it down. The top offset Ace STILL conceals the left edge of the three Aces from the customer.

This even money bet seems a little ridiculous to the customer, until he loses…

As for the betting.. the customer who guessed the four Aces won 3 dollars.. and lost 10.. The other customers all lost their original bet, whatever it was.. 100% of the time. I didn’t go into detail about this because there are too many smart magicians out there who will come up with their own patter and bets. You can give the customer a dollar at the beginning of the effect and tell him it’s his to keep.. and bet.. if you want to increase the gambling aspect.

This effect works because the customer is NOT looking for a ‘trick’.. He thinks his memory and powers of observation are being challenged.

Rick Carruth

Всё гениальное просто.  –  Genius is simplicity.

EFFECT:The Performer begins with his favorite lines about the mysteries of mind reading. A spectator is invited to assist. He then asks the spectator to look through the deck and remove his favorite card and three other random cards. It is not important whether the magi sees the selected cards. After the selection, the magi turns his back and asks the spectator to place his favorite card face down on the table. The spectator is then asks to place a second random card FACE DOWN on top of the favorite. Next, the spectator is to place one of the two remaining cards FACE UP on top of the two cards. And lastly, place the one remaining card FACE DOWN on the three card packet.

The magi asks the spectator to take the four card packet and cut it, cut it, cut it…

Once done, the spectator is asked to place the packet in the hands of the magi.. which are behind his back. Once done, the magi turns to face the spectator, leaving the packet in his hands behind his back. The magi tells the spectator that he (the spectator) has left a psychic impression upon each card he touched, and the most viable of the four psychic impressions was left on the one favorite card of the spectator.

The magi informs the spectator that he will attempt to turn the one upside down card in the same direction as the two random cards.. and turn the card selected by the spectator as his favorite in the opposite direction from the other three.

Momentarily, the magi brings the packet to the forefront.. and the three indifferent cards are all facing one way – and the favorite card is the only card facing the opposite way.

Somehow, the magi has found the one upside down card, turned it the same direction as the other two indifferent cards.. and found the favorite card and reversed it in the packet.. using ONLY psychic touch. (Yeah, right)

Method:

Once the magi has the cards behind his back, and out of sight of the spectator, he turns the FIRST and THIRD cards around. Reversing these two cards will cause the three indifferent cards to face the same way.. and the favorite card to become the only card the opposite direction. This is strictly a mathematical effect, but it works every time. (Sometimes when you bring the packet to the forefront the three indifferent cards will be face up and the favorite card face down. Other times the favorite will be face up and the three others face down.)

This effect was previously published in the Journal of the Finnish Magicians by Petri Kansonen. Petri believes the effect was made famous in Russia by magician Arutjun Akopjan, perhaps in the 60’s or 70’s.. Both of us believe the method may have been incorporated in other effects at a much earlier time, but we cannot find any solid references to support this..

Magic Gone Wrong – Thank You Failure! By Lee Asher

“You might never fail on the scale I did, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you migt as well not have lived at all – in which case, you FAIL by default.” – J.K. Rowling (Author of The Harry Potter Series)

Have you ever performed magic for a group of people, only to realize the routine isn’t going to end as expected? Do you remember the feeling you got when it happened? Terrible! Most magicians can relate, because if you’ve ever presented magic before, you’ve probably been in that kind of situation. Maybe even more than once?

As a beginner, for me, it happened a lot. Nonetheless, those initial experiences shaped me into the performer I am today. With time and practice though, I learned to limit my amount of failure.

Currently as a professional, it rarely happens. Though, when stuff goes awry these days, it makes a meaningful, albeit painful, impact on me.

MAGIC GONE WRONG
Recently, I was asked to perform at the Atlanta Harvest Magic Convention. It’s a wonderful get-together filled with warm & compassionate folk. In one of the rooms, for the formal close-up show with over hundred pairs of eyes watching, I failed miserably with a set I’d been performing for a while.

How you ask? To make a long story short, my pre-arranged card stack was out of order. It’s completely my fault and I take all of the blame!

In general terms, I constructed the set so each routine utilized my stack in specific ways. As you can imagine, a single card being out of place, starts a domino effect which can lead to utter failure…and that’s exactly what happened.

FAILURE HURTS
The point of this story isn’t about what I could have done to save the set, or what I should have done in this situation, rather it’s about dealing with that moment of failure. Most people move past it or rarely discuss it because it’s not enjoyable, but it’s something that everyone needs to learn about.

While the technical occurrence is swift & brief, the effects of failure last for years. Uncomfortable is putting it lightly!

At the moment of my failure that day, I became drenched in (flop) sweat, my heart pounded & raced, and I felt nauseated. Meanwhile, my brain shot into overdrive, and started searching for realistic solutions to end this feeling of misery. It’s similar to the feeling you receive when riding a frightening roller coaster. (Can you tell I HATE roller coasters?)

When my ride came to an end, I was off-kilter for the rest of the day. Part of me wanted to go upstairs, and hide in my room. But my training has taught me not to let my emotions, especially fear, stop me from living the CardStar Lifestyle. Again, thankfully, the Atlanta Harvest was filled with loving & compassionate people.

3 POINTS TO REMEMBER DURING YOUR MOMENT OF FAILURE
Breathe – It’s hard to take a breath when the wind has been knocked out of you! But with each breath, comes the strength & courage to pick yourself up and get back on your feet.

Forgive – The pain of failing is bad enough, so there’s no need to make it any worse. It always helps to conscientiously forgive yourself, so you can immediately move forward.

Live – As long as you’re not performing a dangerous stunt which goes wrong, you will live to see another day. Tomorrow always offers another chance to be better.

THE SILVER LINING OF MY FAIL CLOUD
Ultimately, I’ve been given the opportunity to improve something that needs more work. How often does a realization like that come along? While most might ignore the chance, I accept the challenge. I assure you that the next time our paths cross, my set will be drastically different.

Thanks for all the encouragement, failure. I couldn’t have done it without you!

Humbly,
Lee Asher

ps. For those who have interest in how I ended my set … After realizing the deck was out of order, I gave the audience a large smile, immediately transitioned into a several quick impromptu routines, finished up with the other set-up deck in my pocket, then gracefully exited off the stage.

Breathe… remember to breathe.

Later Day Tricks – A Free PDF
A. Roterberg

This book, a follow-up to ‘The Modern Wizard’, accomplished something few books on magic achieve – they detail almost 40 effects… without a single card trick! For those of you who perform close-up using a variety of different items,  (handkerchiefs, dice, flowers, hats, coins, sand, water, glasses, and paper) you’ll pick up some great ideas from Mr. Roterberg..

“In issuing “The Modern Wizard” of which the present volume is a sequel, I somewhat underrated the space I had allowed for the description of such modern tricks that do not require a great deal of apparatus and therefore was obliged to omit a number of them, a description of which will be found in the following pages together with a number of new tricks that have come out since the publication of the first work.”

Yes.. THAT David Williamson. Here’s a great article by David Britland that captures the very unique style of one of magic’s most unconventional and idiosyncratic personalities. If you’ve had the pleasure of watching David perform, you know exactly what I mean…

This PDF is a reproduction of two articles that appeared in Genii magazine in December… full color pictures included.

The second article, “The Vanishing Man”, by John Lovick, explores David from another interesting angle.

“There’s candles everywhere. I don’t know who all the guys were but it’s a bunch of old gray-haired magicians that you never talk to because you’re the cool teenagers.
But Jay Marshall was definitely there…
They were all sitting around this candlelit table. It was very intimidating. They had towels on their heads like Swamis…”

Magic Class Ka-Ching   How anyone can run a magic class and potentially earn $$ for 30 Minutes of Work.

My friend, Julian Mather, has put together a pdf that explains in detail EVERYTHING you need to know, including the tricks, to offer magic classes to youth.. Although he charges a few dollars for the pdf.. it’s well worth it. (I receive nothing from the sale of this pdf. I offer it as a resource because I own it.. and I really like it)

This book is a blueprint that gives you every detail you need to know to start going to places where they need younger children engaged and stimulated in a controlled setting. Places like after school care, summer camp, vacation care, extra lunchtime lessons.

Places like this crave new programs to keep their kids engaged. They also like when these programs have an educational flavour to them. They also like their programs to be affordable. What you will learn here gives them all of the above.

Once you understand the process you can look at the 130 so free videos I have already made for you and you can begin to create new programs with your own ideas. It doesn’t take much to see that you could create your own suite of lessons that could generate you much more than the one you will discover here today.
