The Three Deck Illusion, a 3D printed card trick..

Engineer and 3D printing enthusiast Mark Fuller has recreated a famous magic trick using a few simple 3D printed parts. Known as the Three Deck Illusion, or Charpentier’s Illusion, named after the French physicist who discovered the phenomenon, the illusion can easily be recreated at home thanks to Fuller’s free, 3D models, and would make for an entertaining and clever way to impress or surprise your friends.

Like most magic tricks, it starts off quite simply. Three identical decks of cards are laid out on a table, and a participant is asked to lift first, all three at once, and then the top deck alone. Surprisingly (for the participant), the top box will appear to weigh more than all three boxes combined—but, they will think, how can that be so, since they all appear to be exactly the same?

The Naked Magician uncovered

CHRISTOPHER Wayne admitted he was nervous welcoming The Sunday Mail inside his childhood home.

It’s a surprising confession considering he performs sold-out comedy magic shows, naked, to female-dominated audiences across the world.

“Whenever I do interviews it’s at a TV studio, it’s at a radio station, it’s on their turf and I’m The Naked Magician.

“You’re at my house and I’m wearing pants so this is foreign to me,” the 31-year-old said.

Wayne and his best mate Mike Tyler starting touring as The Naked Magicians two years ago after realising most people like nudity, magic and comedy.

Now, on a rare break from the stage, Wayne is spending some quality time with his mum Ann at their Mitchelton home in Brisbane.  Read more…..

THE BOB DYLAN OF MAGIC..

THE BOB DYLAN OF MAGIC..

Magician Nate Staniforth kind of makes me mad. It’s frustrating to watch him predict the top card in a deck or hold up a printed lottery ticket with the numbers that four random strangers just said aloud … and have not one freaking clue how he did it.

But the former host of the Discovery Channel’s Breaking Magic calls for a more peaceful response than mob violence: “The point is that something extraordinary has happened,” he told his audience during a performance last year. After a decade on the college circuit, Nate Staniforth had a (magical?) reawakening. About five years ago, he left the U.S. — where magicians have creepy hairdos and dress badly — to meet magicians in different countries, finally setting down roots in India. Upon his return to the States, he’s been able to see the “wonder” of his craft, Staniforth says. His message, as he explained in a prestigious Oxford Union speech, is simple: “Magic for me has been a way to remain open to experiences like wonder and astonishment.” Up next, a memoir and a national tour… Read more….

The science of magic tricks: From misdirection to ‘pausing’ time, experts reveal how their illusions mess with our minds..

– Neuroscientists explain how the art of misdirection works on our brains
– Also explain how by multitasking, the audience is unable to focus on detail
– Using comedy or gory images also dominates the viewers’ attention
– Techniques are used by magicians to divert attention from ‘the tell’

A magician must make a trick look effortless, but it’s very unlikely that anything is casual or spontaneous in a magic show.

Just as you might go to a ballet and imagine the sweat and tears needed to achieve amazing dance moves, magic is choreographed but mustn’t look like it is.

Artists of all kinds, including magicians, are connoisseurs of human behaviour and perception and now neuroscientists have revealed just how their tricks mess with our brains. Read more… (Very interesting article)
