CONJUROR ON THE RIVER KWAI: How Britain’s oldest magician performed his greatest trick – surviving as a Japanese PoW

Not many soldiers who fought throughout World War II are still alive. But one group in particular have almost gone now – the men who fought in the Pacific and were captured by the Japanese.

So to have a brand-new memoir from a man who endured the atrocities of the infamous Burma ‘Death Railway’ feels almost like an illusion – rather like the conjuring tricks which, as this astonishing book shows, diverted the Japanese and helped keep Fergus Anckorn alive.

Left for dead in a storm drain in Singapore, one of few survivors of a hospital massacre in which hundreds died, his sheer existence is a miracle. Yet here he is – still sturdy, bright-eyed and cracking jokes at 93, his story made public only because he happened to sit at dinner next to a writer, Peter Fyans, who realised what a tale Anckorn had to tell.

Yes, Fergus was lucky – but he also made his luck. He was shrewd, wiry, determined and quick-witted, all qualities which he would have to call upon.

Teller’s Favorite Gadgets—Some of Them Magical..

Before bed, I’m very eccentric-looking because I wear Solar Shield glasses over my reading glasses while using my Kindle Voyage. They’re hideous, and if you don’t want to look like a ludicrous monster, don’t wear them. But they block out the blue light that has been shown to keep people awake. On my computers, I use a free program called f.luxthat pulls the blue frequencies out and emphasizes the warmer colors that interfere less with sleep.

I use a teleprompter app on my iPhone called ProPrompter when I deliver a 40-minute lecture called “The Beautiful Lie.” When somebody explains a magic trick to you so you understand every aspect of it, from the technical to the psychological to the historical, it becomes more wondrous than the first time you saw it.  Read more:

Meet the smoldering magician casting a spell on celebs..

On a balmy spring Saturday night, pretty young things pour into theNoMad Hotel. There’s an Adrien Brody sighting in the lobby, but the scantily clad girls in bandage dresses and sky-high Louboutins aren’t here to meet movie stars.

NYC magician Oz Pearlman wins Long Island Marathon..

All smoke, no mirrors: The marathon magician made the competition disappear.

Oz Pearlman, a New York City-based magician and mentalist, led a pack of about 960 runners to win the Long Island Marathon on a sun-soaked day Sunday– a year after coming in second place in the race and two weeks after competing in the Boston Marathon.

Pearlman, 32, who crossed the finish line at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow in 2 hours, 25 minutes, 25 seconds, beat out second-place finisher Jerry Pannullo by more than 20 minutes. Pannullo, 45, of East Islip, came in at 2:46:51 and Brooklyn’s Viktor Chistyakov, 36, was third at 2:53:22. Read more at:
