Did Criss Angel miss the chance to move magic forward?

Criss Angel certainly has the resources to deliver what he promised: “The most mind-blowing, revolutionary magic show ever to be performed live.”

But rival magicians are asking if he has a different goal: to be magic’s ultimate cover band.

Rick Thomas paraphrases the letter he says he sent Angel:

“Your success in Vegas is huge. You have much more opportunity than I do, and many more people who you can hire to work for you to create. I don’t. And when a magician comes up with something they can call their own, let them keep it.”

You may remember Thomas for a family-friendly magic show that ran on the Strip for years. Back when he did a lot of cabinet illusions with tigers, you could call it a bargain version of Siegfried & Roy. But — with the exception of a pop-up pooch — those aren’t what turned up in “Mindfreak Live!” the reboot of Angel’s Luxor showcase. Read the rest of this excellent article by Mike Weatherford at:

This August, we’ll re-launch an entire new look for the Best of Las Vegas celebrating its 35th anniversary. We hope to be able to web-broadcast those awards for the first time this fall and follow with a new weekly magazine.

Who better to kick off our new “magic” than the “Magician of the Decade” Criss Angel. Just hours before this Thursday’s premiere of his new Mindfreak Live show at the Luxor he poignantly penned our first guest column.

I’ve already seen his incredible show from warehouse preparation through to previews and it is without doubt ” “The No. 1 Magic Show Of All Time!” Criss is also getting ready to return to A&E network television this Halloween with the one-hour special “Trick’d.”— Robin Leach

Britain’s Got Talent star dumped by Criss Angel after less than year together..

The magic is over for a former Playboy bunny and the millionaire American illusionist she hopped off with after finding fame on Britain’s Got Talent.

Sexy Chloe Crawford, 28, has been dumped by US superstar Criss Angel, 48, less than a year after falling under his spell.

Portsmouth-born Chloe was dubbed BGT’s hottest ever contestant as she swept to the semi-finals with her levitation act last year while still married to Las Vegas magician Murray SawChuck, 42.

Canadian Murray, who got to the same stage on America’s Got Talent in 2010 when he produced a Ferrari from thin air, is credited with helping Chloe make the transition from nude model to accomplished illusionist. Read more… (Photo of Chloe Crawford and Murray Sawchuck)

Where’s the Magic? A look at the enduring appeal of the world of illusion..

One of the big movie surprises of 2013 was “Now You See Me,” a movie in which a charismatic magician named Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) led a team of illusionists in a heist. The film generated $350 million in global box-office earnings, more than four times its production budget. And while the movie may have had massive plot holes, audiences didn’t seem to mind.

After all, it was about magic. And everybody loves magic. In fact, so many people love magic that a sequel, “Now You See Me 2,” is headed for theaters in June.

Another element that likely attracted audiences to the movie was the Las Vegas setting, which itself is host to the largest collection of magic acts in the country. Magic shows continue to be so popular that Vegas has no fewer than 11 major acts right now, including David Copperfield, Penn & Teller, and a Criss Angel show with Cirque du Soleil called Believe. Angel, according to a recent Bloomberg story, earns approximately $70 million — million — a year from his magic ventures.  Read more and watch videos at:
