Vegas magician stagehands suing over wage dispute..

Attorneys for magician David Copperfield and several current and former Las Vegas stagehands said Friday they’re in talks to make lawsuits they’ve traded in a backstage dispute disappear.

A Feb. 15 federal wage-abuse lawsuit filed by seven stagehands alleges that over the past three years the veteran Las Vegas illusionist sometimes made them work 14 hours a day and seven days a week without paying overtime.

A Jan. 3 state court lawsuit lodged by Copperfield business entities Backstage Employment and Referral Inc., David Copperfield’s Disappearing Inc. and Imagine Nation Company Inc. accuses six stagehands of breach of contract, conspiracy and disclosure of trade secrets…

Paul Daniels claims there are no ‘great all-round magicians’ left..

MAGIC legend Paul Daniels has said there are no “great all-round magicians” at the moment as he prepares to return to Fairfield Halls next month.

The former Every Second Counts host is returning to the halls next month as the King of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland alongside his wife and assistant Debbie McGee as the White Rabbit.

Daniels, 75, spoke to the Advertiser from behind a counter in a shop where he was helping a cashier price items.

He said he has met the current crop of magicians such as David Blaine, Derren Brown and Dynamo but would not judge them properly until he sees them live one stage.

Magician-illusionist-writer Andrew Mayne wants to visit the Philippines, which he admitted is among his dream destinations.

“I’ve never been (there) but I would love to go visit the Philippines,” he said in a phone interview, adding that he knows a lot of “very intelligent Filipino people,” which he counts among his “mentors.” Of these, he cites his head magic consultant Enrico dela Vega, as well as his Judo teacher as both Filipino.

Born in Opelika, Alabama, Mayne’s interest in magic began when his grandfather showed him how he could make a quarter vanish, only to make it reappear moments later in his shoe or sometimes, his belly button.

“Until now I still don’t have any idea how he did it,” Mayne confessed.

He earned recognition being the second youngest illusionist to embark on a world tour (the first was American illusionist David Copperfield)…
