Director John Chu and Magician Keith Barry Reveal Secrets from Now You See Me 2 ..

A good movie is always magical, but Now You See Me 2 is truly movie magic, employing the skills of mentalist, hypnotist and magicianKeith Barry and world-famous illusionist David Copperfield to help create real-life illusions and to train the actors to do enough sleight of hand to make it look as if they really are as talented as their characters in the film.

“We said, ‘Let’s build these things, let’s actually prove to the audience that it’s not cut away, that these actors have trained and are doing these things,‘” director John Chu told Parade.com during an interview at Los Angeles’ Magic Castle to promote the film’s DVD and Blu-ray release. “Whether they believe us or not, that’s a different story. We really wanted to do it for ourselves, and, I think instinctually, you feel the reality of it in that way.”

In Now You See Me 2, the Four Horsemen [J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson), Jack Wilder (Dave Franco), and new team member Lula (Lizzy Caplan)] return one year after outwitting the FBI for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe), who blackmails the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only way to save themelves from the  precarious position he has put them in is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and expose Mabry for who he really is.

It’s been said that Keith Barry has created a monster. Not Now You See Me 2 – the star-studded illusionist caper, which, despite some mixed reviews Stateside, is actually rollicking good fun – but rather Woody Harrelson, whom Barry skilled up on magic tricks for Harrelson’s role in the movie. Barry’s brand of illusion has apparently become such a part of Harrelson’s going out shtick that he’s now “doing it everywhere he goes, hypnotising people all the time”, the Waterford-born illusionist tells me.

Dave Franco, another cast member, was an even quicker study, Barry tells me. “I handed him a deck of cards and within a couple of days he was at the level of a semi-professional magician. He’s now at the level of a professional. He can take a playing card and turn off the light switch by throwing it. I can’t do that even, although it’s not my speciality.”  Read more…..

How a magician orchestrated the Lizzy Caplan decapitation scene in ‘Now You See Me 2’

How a magician orchestrated the Lizzy Caplan decapitation scene in ‘Now You See Me 2’

Keith Barry had never chopped off anyone’s head before, but he was up for giving it a try.

Over the course of his career, the Irish mentalist, hypnotist and magician has performed all kinds of mind-bending tricks and stunts, from apparent feats of clairvoyance to driving a car at high speeds while blindfolded. But until signing on as the chief magic and mentalism consultant on the caper sequel “Now You See Me 2,” Barry had never tried to pull off the classic decapitation illusion on anyone — let alone a high-profile actress.

The team behind “Now You See Me 2,” in theaters June 10, is aiming to recapture the magic of the original 2013 film — the story of a group of illusionists called the Four Horsemen who use their presto chango skills to pull off a series of Robin Hood-style heists — which grossed $352 million worldwide. To that end, early in the sequel screenwriter Ed Solomon and director Jon M. Chu wanted to introduce the new member of the Horsemen — a magician named Lula (Lizzy Caplan), who has a twisted sense of humor — with a scene that would surprise the audience while conveying the character’s morbid flair. Lopping off her head seemed as if it would do the trick. Read the rest and view the storyboard at:

‘If I’m buying a new house or car, I’ll use any technique I can to get them cheaper’ – Keith Barry

‘If I’m buying a new house or car, I’ll use any technique I can to get them cheaper’ – Keith Barry

He has messed with the minds of some of the world’s biggest stars, from Morgan Freeman and Keanu Reeves to Nicole Scherzinger and Woody Harrelson, so meeting mentalist and hypnotist Keith Barry one-to-one is a slightly intimidating affair, to say the least.

Fresh from his success on the ratings-topping ITV show You’re Back in the Room with Phillip Schofield, which has now been commissioned for a second season and has also been recorded for Australia’s Channel Nine, Keith is excited to be back in Ireland to tour with his latest stage show ‘Out of Control.’ Read more..
