A magician should never reveal too much but the secrets of world famous illusionist David Copperfield’s show have been exposed in a long-running legal battle.
The Mail on Sunday reports how London-born chef Gavin Cox is suing the world’s most famous magician, claiming he was left with permanent brain damage as a result of an illusion that went wrong at his Las Vegas show.
Mr Cox, 55, was called on stage by Copperfield at the MGM Hotel and Casino to take part in a disappearing audience illusion in November 2013, only to fall backstage mid-way through the trick.
Now the details of the famous ‘vanishing crowd’ trick have been revealed in extraordinary detail, court documents in the three-year legal battle show. Read more…
One of the big movie surprises of 2013 was “Now You See Me,” a movie in which a charismatic magician named Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) led a team of illusionists in a heist. The film generated $350 million in global box-office earnings, more than four times its production budget. And while the movie may have had massive plot holes, audiences didn’t seem to mind.
After all, it was about magic. And everybody loves magic. In fact, so many people love magic that a sequel, “Now You See Me 2,” is headed for theaters in June.
Another element that likely attracted audiences to the movie was the Las Vegas setting, which itself is host to the largest collection of magic acts in the country. Magic shows continue to be so popular that Vegas has no fewer than 11 major acts right now, including David Copperfield, Penn & Teller, and a Criss Angel show with Cirque du Soleil called Believe. Angel, according to a recent Bloomberg story, earns approximately $70 million — million — a year from his magic ventures. Read more and watch videos at:
Christopher Nicholas Sarantakos, aka Criss Angel, the biggest name in Las Vegas magic, lives in the desert foothills 20 minutes from the Strip in a $22 million, 25,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style estate he calls Serenity. The 48-year-old illusionist, instantly recognizable to fans for his black eyeliner, spiky black hair, and heavy-metal jewelry, parks his Rolls-Royce Phantom, Lamborghini Murciélago, and Cadillac Escalade out front. The décor inside suggests a Gothic-accented Greek Orthodox church. The walls are adorned with stylized crosses and portraits of the crucified Jesus, one of which features drops of Angel’s own blood on the floor below.
Angel can afford Rolls-Royces and Lamborghinis and Jesuses because Believe, the spectacular he put on at the Luxor Las Vegas in partnership with Cirque du Soleil, together with his other ventures, has been generating about $70 million a year for him, say people familiar with Angel’s finances.
