By day, Bill Hutcheon is a zoning investigator for the city of Sacramento’s Community Development Department. By night, however, he’s known as Bill Devon, a magician and owner of Top Class Magic (www.topclassmagic.com). Born in 1949, he started as a magician’s apprentice before working professionally from age 16 until his mid-20s, when the need to support a wife and child required him to find a “regular job.” Still, he’s not given up his tricks entirely. These days, he still performs at birthday parties, corporate events and community celebrations. With 50 years of magic under his belt, Devon sat down with SN&R to talk about his career and the Sacramento magic community…
Good article by Seth Kubersky for Orlando Weekly outlining the future for magic and illusions in central Florida…
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of observing many masters of magic, both world-famous (David Copperfield, Penn & Teller) and under-appreciated (Asi Wind, Jeff McBride), but I’ve usually had to leave Central Florida to do so. Orlando’s tourist industry is built around “magic,” but despite our area’s extensive population of wizards and fairies, there’s precious little actual prestidigitation being performed around town. Sure, you can still find trick demonstrations inside magic shops at some local theme parks (though the Magic Kingdom’s are sadly long gone), and a new Great Magic Hall is scheduled to open at Kissimmee’s Old Town later in 2014. But though O-town offers evening attractions built around jousting knights, mystery-solving sleuths and surreal circus stunts, no one has succeeded with a large-scale illusion production like you’ll find in Las Vegas. Lately, however, I’ve become aware of a more modest magicians’ resurgence…
HIS name is Zlwin Chew and it’s a name that many who have met him will never forget.
Last year, this young and dynamic magician from Klang was one of the entertainment attractions on cruise ships, enthralling audiences both on stage and off with his magic performances.
It was five years ago in April 2009 when, as an amateur and armed with only a deck of cards and minimal magic skills, Chew proposed to the Zouk entertainment outlet in Kuala Lumpur the idea of him being their resident magician.
It was an audacious move, to say the least, and one that was motivated simply by a passion for this particular form of art.
