Lost HP Lovecraft work commissioned by Houdini escapes shackles of history..

A long-lost manuscript by HP Lovecraft, an investigation of superstition through the ages that the author was commissioned to write by Harry Houdini, has been found in a collection of magic memorabilia.

The Cancer of Superstition was previously known only in outline and through its first chapter. Houdini had asked Lovecraft in 1926 to ghostwrite the treatise exploring superstition, but the magician’s death later that year halted the project, as his wife did not wish to pursue it.

According to Potter & Potter Auctions of Chicago, the 31-page typewritten manuscript was discovered in a large collection of memorabilia from a now-defunct magic shop. Part of the collection consisted of papers kept by Houdini’s widow, Beatrice, and her manager, Edward Saint. Read more..

Criss Angel to close ‘Believe’ to launch ‘Mindfreak Live!’ at Luxor

(From Robin Leach) After more than 3,000 performances, magician Criss Angel will shut down his show “Believe” at the Luxor on April 17. “Believe” recently celebrated its seventh anniversary and has thrilled more than 4 million guests since its October 2008 opening.

Then after a three-week installation at the Luxor theater, he will open “Mindfreak Live!” in preview performances May 11. Criss will officially celebrate the new show’s star-studded premiere June 23.

 Award-winning Las Vegas magician Jan Rouven kept over 3,400 child pornography videos on computers in his pool house, FBI officials said Wednesday.

Rouven, 38, the star of a Vegas Strip show called “The New Illusions,” sent an undercover agent videos of men having sex with boys in an online file sharing exchange in August, according to a federal complaint unsealed Wednesday at his detention hearing.

Investigators who traced Rouven’s IP address later searched the casita at his Las Vegas mansion, uncovering 3,486 kiddie porn videos and 111 pictures on Rouven’s iMac and external hard drive, FBI agents said. Rouven’s husband told agents he was angry because his partner looks at porn “24/7,” the complaint said.
