Penn and Teller Are Revealing How Their Magic Tricks Are Done — And It’s O.K.

As one of the few humans on Earth who un-ironically calls himself a “TV magic obsessive,” let me tell you, there’s never been a magic show on television like Penn & Teller: Fool Us.

I approach the show from several perspectives. As a layperson, it’s entertaining as hell with a clear-cut premise. Fool Us is a magic competition on the CW Television Network in which performers try to fool Penn Jillette and Teller as to how their trick was done. If they succeed, the aspiring magicians win an opening-act slot in the duo’s longtime Las Vegas show. The show has been a surprise ratings hit in its Monday primetime slot, averaging 2 million viewers (it’s been renewed for a third season).

I also watch the show as a guy interested in magic since age six. I’m comfortable saying Fool Us has advanced the art form within popular culture better than any televised magic show in recent memory. The variety of magic subgenres given the spotlight is encouraging for those of us who don’t perform with live tigers: there’ve been acts of coin and card magic, mind-reading, escapology, quick change (where costumes transform in a flash)—even a man who solves Rubik’s cubes, magically. The season debut also saw increased social engagement versus last season’s premiere, and reigned as the most social drama of the night and week leading into the premiere.

Doctor Who is unlike anything else on television, a storied franchise that is as fresh and contemporary as ever, with brilliant writing and superb performances,” said Sarah Barnett, President of BBC AMERICA. “We couldn’t be more thrilled that new and returning Doctor Who fans tuned into the live premiere in record numbers and we look forward to bringing more of the Doctor to this passionate audience.”

Live + Same Day Ratings Highlights*:

The premiere telecast delivered 2 million total viewers and 1.1 million Adults 18-49.  Among A18-49, Doctor Whopropelled BBC AMERICA to #3 in its timeslot, out-delivering the big 4 broadcast networks and ranking only behind college football on ESPN and the finale of Sábado Gigante on Univision.

In the A18-49 demo, Doctor Who is now one of just 14 dramas on TV this season to show any growth from its prior season premiere (out of 100+ returning dramas).

The A18-49 audience ranks as Doctor Who’s biggest season premiere ever on BBC AMERICA, nearly doubling the S8 average (+95%). In the demo, episode 901 ranks among the top 10 returning cable drama premieres this season, beating Homeland, Suits and The Strain, among others.

All tracked demos showed increases from the season 8 average with the most significant increases seen among the younger demos, most notably P12-24 (+186%) and P18-34 (+161%).

In the newest season of Doctor Who, the Doctor and Clara embark on reckless adventures in all of space and time. In Peter Capaldi’s second season at the helm of the TARDIS, the series sees the Doctor and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) going on a journey that takes them to deadly alien planets, creepy underwater bases, Viking villages, a global Zygon uprising, and through hidden alien dens, to the very end of time itself.

Meeting monsters old and new, the Doctor will come face to face with Missy (Michelle Gomez), a city of Daleks, deadly mercenaries called the Mire, terrifying ghosts and more.

Previously announced and taking up a guest role in the new season will be Maisie Williams, having already achieved global success for her role as Arya Stark in Game of Thrones. Michelle Gomez (Missy) returns to plague the Doctor and Clara in the season opener, and UNIT are back with Jemma Redgrave (Kate Stewart) and Ingrid Oliver (Osgood) returning following their popular entrance last season. Also confirmed as guest cast in the new season are Reece Shearsmith, Rebecca Front, Rufus Hound, Paul Kaye, Elaine Tan, Neet Mohan, Bethany Black, Paul Courtenay Hyu, Joivan Wade and Sophie Stone.

Joshua Jay and Anna Kloots: A Magician Marries His Assistant

Joshua Jay and Anna Kloots: A Magician Marries His Assistant

The groom? The magician Joshua Jay. The bride? Anna Kloots, his magician’s assistant. When Mr. Jay, 33, appears in a straitjacket, Ms. Kloots, 26, pulls in people from the audience to check the integrity of his bonds and his blindfold.

That’s before “the two minutes or so it takes me to escape,” said Mr. Jay, who began performing magic at 8, and who now is an athletic 6-foot-3 and the embodiment of the handsome prestidigitator. (Some have mistaken him for Bradley Cooper.)

Afterward, Ms. Kloots, who quit her high-end sales job two years ago to tour the world with her globe-trotting conjurer, then helps him with performing other mystifying tricks. Read more…

‘America’s Got Talent’ 2015 Winner Paul Zerdin Is Being Accused Of Alleged Joke Theft; Here’s The Proof [VIDEO]

Now that NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” has concluded Season 10 and crowned ventriloquist Paul Zerdin the winner, it should be smooth sailing for the performer from here on out. Unfortunately, that’s not the case as a pair of fellow ventriloquists are now accusing Zerdin of joke-theft.

According to BBC News, once Zerdin won the grand prize of the 2015 competition, he told the outlet that one of the only reasons he agreed to do the show was because no one back home in the U.K. would notice.

“I never thought it would be like this. I just thought I’d nip over to America, have a go at this talent show, and if it didn’t work out then I could come home back to the UK and no one would be any the wiser,” he said. Read more
