10 questions with magician Mat Franco, ‘AGT’ winner and new Linq headliner..

Las Vegas – Mat Franco is the first and only magician to win NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” and now he’s following in the footsteps of ventriloquist and Season 2 “AGT” winner Terry Fator with his own Las Vegas Strip residency. On Wednesday night, Mat begins previews at the Linq Hotel Showroom ahead of his grand opening set for Aug. 21. Mat takes the stage with a fresh, fun and feel-good twist on magic that defies expectations. In a full-scale production built on brand-new, never-before-seen material, Mat promises to deliver his most spectacular performances yet — but will still keep his love of getting up close with the crowd, which is the heart of every show and what he demonstrated to “AGT” judges. Summer,  and TV, good for Magic on the Strip..

Summer,  and TV, good for Magic on the Strip..

By Mike Weatherford for the Las Vegas Review-Journal..

The home stretch of summer preserves some uniquely Las Vegas traditions for magicians and the TV exposure that helps them. Especially the one in the green dragon costume…

Piff the Magic Dragon (John van der Put) sailed to the live competition of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” after Neil Patrick Harris, who makes no secret of his fondness for magic, used his “golden buzzer” to send the comic magician straight to the next round of competition at Radio City Music Hall starting Tuesday, bypassing the rest of the preliminaries.

In the long term, at least, that’s good news for “X Comedy — Uncensored Fun” at the Flamingo. Producer Angela Stabile says Piff will return to the show Sept. 3, so he would be flying back and forth to New York until the “Talent” finale Sept. 16 if he goes the distance.

But next week, he goes straight from “Talent” to the Edinburgh Fringe festival to do the long version of his act, “Breakfast at Piffany’s,” Friday through Aug. 29. Piff is being spelled in “X Comedy” by the funny juggling dude comedian Todd Paul, so audiences are still getting a strong variety show.

MASTER MAGICIAN JAN ROUVEN PLANS TO BE ON THE LAS VEGAS STRIP FOR YEARS TO COME..

MASTER MAGICIAN JAN ROUVEN PLANS TO BE ON THE LAS VEGAS STRIP FOR YEARS TO COME..

Jan Rouven has performed an inestimable number of tricks on the path to Strip-headliner status, but it looks like a majority of his future escapes and sleight-of-hand demonstrations will be in Las Vegas. The German magician first arrived in Vegas in October 2009, performing some of the escapes from his current Tropicana show The New Illusions before awestruck crowds on Fremont Street. His star rose quickly, and by November of last year he was not only a headliner on the south end of the Strip but one of fewer than a handful of marquee magicians branded on billboards and playing the biggest casino-resort rooms. With no plans to leave Las Vegas, Rouven’s ascent can only continue.

“I love it here,” says Rouven. “I’m happy.” And it shows in his performances. Rouven’s effervescence is contagious, and his sly sense of humor—often self-deprecating, playing up his Teutonic-accented pronunciations—contributes to the charm offensive that wins over audiences.  Read more..
