Interview: How did I get here? Magician Martin Cox’s crazy journey from Bouncer to Bamboozler..

Sat just across the table from me is Martin Cox. I’m just an arm’s length away – less than an arm’s length for the burly, bald and big-fisted former bouncer, I note – but I still have no idea.

No clue how he’s moved an ace of hearts from one hand to a pile on the table, seemingly without moving his very big hands at all. Impressive tricks come one after another, demonstrations of techniques explained to me, but it’s too subtle to be spotted.

Not long before that, we start the interview talking about whether he’s played card games for money, as opposed to pulled tricks to entertain. Next thing I know, I’m having a lesson in how to count cards (though he doesn’t admit to using this for personal gain).

Many detours in conversation later, I discover the East End-born, former market trader’s life has been much like a series of misdirections – each a useful step towards his life as a magician. Read more:

Piff, the Second Most Famous Magic Dragon …

If you watched America’s Got Talent last year, you are familiar with Piff the Magic Dragon. Although he didn’t win the top prize, he did get into the finals and every week entertained the judges and America with his combination of mind-blowing magic and hilarious comedy.

And his little dog, Mr. Piffles–the World’s First Magic Performing Chihuahua–was a treat to watch too.

While Puff the Magic Dragon may have lived by the sea, his younger and less successful brother, Piff the Magic Dragon was born and raised in South East London, England. As a human, he was known as John, but when he went on to perform magic, he became Piff. Read more..

David Copperfield On Why Magic Should Be Recognized By The Government..

It’s been a while since David Copperfield pulled off an illusion on the scale of walking through the Great Wall of China or making the Statue of Liberty disappear, but he’s keeping busy. The most successful magician of all time performs more than 500 times a year in Las Vegas and recently was part of an effort to persuade the federal government to recognize magic as an art form. In March, Representative Pete Sessions of Texas dropped House Resolution 642 before Congress, which aims to ensure magic is “preserved, understood and promulgated.” Copperfield, a driving force behind the bill, is listed as an example of the heights that can be attained through mastery of the discipline.

If the government needs additional convincing, Now You See Me 2, the sequel to 2013’s hit magic-fueled thriller inspired by Copperfield’s theatrical stage shows, is in theaters June 10.  Read more…
