Vaudeville Productions and Crook Productions team up to find the next great magician for ITV

Derren Brown’s Vaudeville Productions and Crook Productions have been commissioned by ITV to co-produce a brand new magic competition show, The Next Great Magician (6 x 60’). Crook Productions is part of Andrew O’Connor and ITV Studios’ Cat’s On The Roof Media, and The Next Great Magician is Crook Productions’ first big entertainment commission since the group’s inception earlier this year.

The series will feature the world’s best magicians performing their greatest tricks, many of them for the first time ever on television, as they compete to be crowned The Next Great Magician. It will air on ITV next summer. Each episode will see five magicians perform their most sensational tricks, from close-up and comedy magic through to amazing illusions and incredible escapes, both in front of a studio audience and on location in front of astounded members of the public and celebrities. The magicians will judge each other’s performances, with each week’s highest-voted contestant going through to the final. In the grand live final, the five top magicians will perform even more astonishing new tricks in a battle to win a truly money-can’t-buy prize: their own television special on ITV.

Andrew O’Connor said: “Some of the world’s best magicians are hero-worshipped by their peers but are unknown to wider audiences, having never trusted a TV company to film them before. The Next Great Magician will see them perform their most remarkable tricks on TV and judge each other’s performances in what promises to be a mind-blowing and unmissable magical spectacular!” Elaine Bedell added: “We’re delighted to bringing The Next Great Magician to our entertainment slate, and to be working with Andrew and Derren who are the best in the business when it comes to magic and illusion production.”

The Next Great Magician is executive produced by Andrew O’Connor, Derren Brown and Matt Crook. It was commissioned by Elaine Bedell, Director of Entertainment & Comedy and Peter Davey, Commissioning Editor, Entertainment for ITV.

Siegfried helps Roy feed a cub as magicians emerge for rare appearance to support a good cause… 12 years after THAT tiger attack..

It’s 12 years since a tiger that Siegfried and Roy used in their Las Vegas magic show attacked Roy on stage, leaving him partially disabled.

But that has never deterred the magicians from their quest to help save rare big cats from extinction.

On Thursday, the couple helped make 12-year-old Emma Goldsberry’s wish come true when they introduced her to four tiger cubs at their SARMOTI Cubs Day at the Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

They also made her their Child Ambassador Of Conservation in a private ceremony organised by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Emma got to pet two rare white female cubs, Liberty and Maharani, who were born to mother Indira and father Svengali on August 5 as part of a litter that also included golden female Hirah and golden male Justice.

They are the newest additions to Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden at the casino. Read more and watch video at:

Soon, hunt for the world’s greatest magician to begin..

Soon, hunt for the world’s greatest magician to begin..

HYDERABAD, OCTOBER 6:

M SOMASEKHAR

The search for the world’s greatest magician/illusionist will begin soon. It will involve going to over 100 countries where the art is practised, says Tony Hassini, Chairman and CEO of the International Magicians Society, US.

The winner will not only get the recognition, but also a $1-million award. A popular Las Vegas Casino is to sponsor the hunt and formally announce it in early 2016, 76-year old Cyprus-born Hassini told BusinessLine here.

At present, the greatest, acclaimed magician is David Copperfield, who is a consummate artiste, said Hassini, who was in India, presenting the Merlin Award, the Oscars of the magicians’ world. The IMS, with over 37,000 members worldwide, is the largest magic organisation recorded by the Guinness Records.

Interestingly, in the repertoire of tricks of David Copperfield, the best known are making the Statue of Liberty disappear and walking through the Great Wall of China.

“My visit to India, the country where magic and mystery took birth, is to look for talented magicians who could quality for this recognition,” said Hassini, with a toss of his curly, black flowing mane. The man with a sharp sense of humour proudly recalled his early learning with P C Sorcar Sr., one of India’s greatest magicians.

Hassini presented the Merlin Award of IMS to Samala Venu, well-known magician from Hyderabad, who won it for the second year in a row in the city on September 30. A week earlier, in Mumbai, Hassini gave the award to Zenia Bhumgara, a college student as the ‘Best female, teenage magician in India’.

Hassini, who started his own ‘magic’ journey at the age of 16, has battled dyslexia and hearing problems to etch his name among the best in business. He is best known for making the skull float and popularising Burger King.

Magic Olympics

“I plan to organise a Magic Olympics in India in the next 1-2 years. It will be a gathering of the best of magicians and illusionists and I am talking to people here,” he said.

To the budding magicians out to perform on stage, he had a quick demo and advice: “When you produce the white pigeon from nowhere, do not quickly toss it into the audience in your enthusiasm, flip it straight up in front of you so that the act is captured well by all the cameras in front and appreciated by the people in the front rows.”
