The son of the famous late local magician Leon Mandrake says he was saddened to learn his old family house — including its secret rooms and passages — had been destroyed by fire.
“It was a very magical house — and a very happy home for a very long time,” said Lon Mandrake, whose father Leon was a renowned magician and illusionist who lived in the house until his death in 1993. Read more and watch videos..
And now for his next trick, Sacha Baron Cohen will star in MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN for Warner Bros. Get Hard writer-director Etan Cohen is set to direct the film, which is based on the popular character from the syndicated newspaper comic strip created by Lee Falk in 1934. The most recent drafts of the script come from David Peoples and Janet Peoples and Puss In Boots scribe Tom Wheeler.
The story centers around the adventures of Mandrake, the illusionist and escape artist with the power to hypnotize his foes. With his companion Lothar, he travels the globe solving mysteries and fighting evildoers – including his twin brother who uses his powers for evil instead than good. Sources say that the plan is to update the character for the 21st century, with Mandrake being recruited by the United States government for a secret mission.
The character, who has been described as “America’s first superhero,” is known as a magician whose work is based on an unusually fast hypnotic technique, through which his subjects see illusions when he “gestures hypnotically.” He uses the technique to defeat villains, including gangsters, mad scientists, extraterrestrials, and characters from other dimensions. He has the ability to turn invisible, shapeshift, levitate, and teleport thanks to the powers imbued to him by the hat, cloak, and wand he inherited from his father. Read more..
Long before Batman, Captain America,Spiderman and a host of Marvel’s superheroes made their way to our economically-liberated shores, two caped and masked marvels had already winged themselves into the lives of thousands of young people, circa the 1970s, a time when graphic art in comic books was taken for granted, quite forgetting how powerful the medium was to get the message home.
They both looked ridiculous. One wore XS purple tights and a mask and was called ‘Phantom’ and the other wore a top hat, a slim moustache and a cape and went by the name ‘Mandrake the Magician’. But the things they did! It was all one could do to collect every last paisa of pocket money we had and run to the neighbourhood newsstand, where in a single vertical file, these comic books were suspended by the sheer willpower of a clothesline clip (which in itself was a feat). Lee Falk created the iconic character and it started its continuous run in the newspapers of the world on June 11, 1934. That was several years before Inside Magic took shape but we carried the strip for years.
