Now That’s Magic! – Paul Daniels Interview

Now That’s Magic! – Paul Daniels Interview

By Andy Howells for South Wales Argus

Veronica Lee talks to Paul Daniels

Paul Daniels is just as much a live-wire in real life as he is on stage – he’s not one of those entertainers who switch off their personality the minute they leave the theatre – and when we meet at the Savoy Hotel in London to discuss his new show he is straight into the jokes, most of them at his own expense.

“Comic, magician, international sex symbol…” the diminutive funnyman says by way of introduction, as “the lovely Debbie McGee” – as we all surely call his wife and onstage-partner – looks on. I ask if he is ever “off”. “No,” Debbie says with a smile. “Paul is exactly the same at home as he is on stage. I don’t know anyone else so resolutely positive about life.”

The couple, who married in 1988, are about to tour/touring a new show, Back Despite Popular Demand! – which, they tell me, contains some old favourites as well as new tricks. “People complain when we don’t do tricks they expect to see every time they come to see us, so we’ve included two oldies, my signature illusions as it were, but everything else is different,” says Paul. “And the great thing about a live show is that it’s never the same twice because the audience is different each night.”

Magician Paul Daniels and wife Debbie McGee on their marriage

By Rhik Samadder for the Observer..

We met thanks to the Ayatollah. Debbie was a ballerina, but had to escape his revolution. She managed to get out, leaving behind money, clothes, everything. She returned here and auditioned for Bernard Delfont, the huge theatrical group – it was a cattle market in those days. It probably still is.

I remember her sitting on a wall outside the rehearsal room, looking like the little mannequin drawing between the paragraphs of Playboymagazine. We got chatting. She had personality and life – and presence. She became a box jumper, as we call them. We dated a little, but she was far too young. I said: “Those nasty people called journalists will shred you, call you a gold-digger. Find someone your own age.”..

Watch: Magician Paul Daniels reveals why he and wife Debbie couldn’t appear on Celebrity Big Brother

Much-loved magician Paul Daniels has revealed that he and wife Debbie McGee were considered for Celebrity Big Brother but had to decline the invite.

The decision to not go on the Channel 5 show was due to family reasons says Paul on his YouTube channel explaining that both the couple’s nephew and Debbie’s father are ill.

The South Bank-raised magic man said: “After much misinformation I’m setting the record straight.

“The Big Brother team are very nice people.

“They came around and discussed the possibility of Debbie and I being the first couple to go into the Big Brother house.”

Paul, 76, says that the main motivator for the couple to go onto the show would have been cash.

He said: “A job is a job is a job.

“To be fair, Big Brother offered a lot of money.”

Paul Daniels and his wife Debbie McGee are the latest names to be linked to Celebrity Big Brother.

The magician and his assistant are reported to be headed into the Borehamwood house for Channel 5’s reality TV show, reported The Sun.

A show source said the couple are “very excited” to be entering the house, adding: “They’re perfect for Big Brother. They are great fun, big personalities and don’t take themselves too seriously.”

The pair, who have been married for 26 years, are no strangers to reality TV shows having previously appeared on The X Factor: Battle Of The Stars, Channel 5’s The Farm, and Channel 4’s Wife Swap. Paul has also been a contestant on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Gogglebox’s posh pair Steph and Dom Parker, along with George Gilbey, are also rumoured for the upcoming series, with other names including ex-The Only Way Is Essex star Lauren Goodger and former X Factor finalist Marcus Collins….
