Las Vegas illusionist Franz Harary’s House of Magic celebrates first anniversary in Macau..

By ROBIN LEACH – NICHE DIVISION OF LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

The ex-pat community in the gaming enclave of Macau has been growing larger each year, and no one city has made such an impact as Las Vegas with an influx of everybody from hotel and gaming executives to entertainers. Everybody from Cirque du Soleil to boxing’s Bob Arum has planted a stake in its phenomenal growth.

Perhaps no one more than Las Vegas magician Franz Harary, who decided to switch his headquarters from our town to the island 40 miles from Hong Kong. He made the biggest bet of more than $50 million to build his own House of Magic.

Now just as Steve Wynn opens his Palace Hotel there and Sheldon Adelson follows in October with Paris and MGM Resorts International next year, Franz is about to celebrate his House of Magic’s first anniversary. Read more….

Magic Live! Red Carpet Report: The Amazing Johnathan, magazine’s end, VIP magicians.

It’s not magic … it’s an outright miracle! Welcome to a special Red Carpet Report from the 25th anniversary of Magic Magazine and its 15-year Magic Live! convention at The Orleans.

Three years ago, Las Vegas headline entertainer The Amazing Johnathan was given two years to live. He suffered from diabetes, cardiomyopathy and damaged internal organs, and the last time I saw him at Lance Burton’s movie premiere of BILLY TOP-IT: MASTER MAGICIAN at The Palms, he was pale, weak and in a wheelchair.

On Wednesday night, I met with him and his wife, Anastasia Synn, at Magic Live!, and standing tall he told me that he’s going on the road in January for a short tour. Former Luxor President Felix Rappaport invited A.J. to perform at The Foxwoods in Connecticut.

The show is Jan. 12, with a second at a theater in Boston on Jan. 13. A.J. told me that he credits unorthodox stem cell treatment for his recovery. “I’m nowhere near back to normal, but we’re making progress,” he said.

“I performed here at the convention for the first time in three years, but I really felt tired after five minutes. I’m going to start building up my strength in the pool, and, if I’m able to, we’ll extend those two January nights into a longer run on the road.” Read more..

This August, we’ll re-launch an entire new look for the Best of Las Vegas celebrating its 35th anniversary. We hope to be able to web-broadcast those awards for the first time this fall and follow with a new weekly magazine.

Who better to kick off our new “magic” than the “Magician of the Decade” Criss Angel. Just hours before this Thursday’s premiere of his new Mindfreak Live show at the Luxor he poignantly penned our first guest column.

I’ve already seen his incredible show from warehouse preparation through to previews and it is without doubt ” “The No. 1 Magic Show Of All Time!” Criss is also getting ready to return to A&E network television this Halloween with the one-hour special “Trick’d.”— Robin Leach

Our own Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Las Vegas?..

Harry Potter attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry — for free. Now thanks to the Las Vegas-headquartered Institute for Magic Education Inc., students of magic performance will have the same advantage.

The institute is the brainchild of President Dr. Lynn Miner along with magic stars Mac King from Harrah’s and Jeff McBride, founder of the McBride Magic & Mystery School in Henderson.. Read more…
